A fifteen-year-old boy called Duke is ambitious to buy a "piece" (a gun) from an adult racketeer named Priest, to become president of the gang to which he belongs, and to return them to active "bopping" (gang fighting) which has declined in Harlem. It is a clearly patent allegory of an attempt by Duke to attain manhood and identity in the only way accessible to him - the antisocial one.

China's hypersonic missile 'cuts at the heart of nuclear deterrence'
ASPI’s Michael Shoebridge says “the Chinese are sounding like the North Koreans” after denying a hypersonic missile was tested, instead claiming it was a spacecraft.
“You’ll hear from the North Koreans it’s all about peaceful use of space but it’s not and it’s the same with this Chinese test,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“They use one of their enormous Long March rockets to launch what looks like a hypersonic glider vehicle into space and then they launch that hypersonic glide vehicle around the world to prove that they could direct it during hypersonic flight.”
Mr Shoebridge said this is a “really dangerous destabilising weapons program that cuts at the heart of nuclear deterrence” and indicates China intends to target the United States with new weapons.

Korean companies leave China, thousands of unemployed cry, China's economy crumbles

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced the closure of its plant Ningbo in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang last week after allegedly agreeing to hand over its land to the local government for industrial renewal, sparking days of protests by laid-off workers seeking better severance pay.
The plant‘s closure revived fears that large foreign investors and employers could be looking to depart the world’s second largest economy, particularly after Samsung closed its last Chinese mobile phone factory in 2019 and amid growing global focus on diversification of supply chains after the Covid-19 pandemic and the trade war.
In the past week, thousands of workers have protested the plant‘s closure, demanding a better resettlement plan and higher compensation from the local government and company. It is not known how many staff the plant employed, but SHI has nearly 10,000 employees globally.
According to documents provided by workers, SHI issued a letter to employees last Friday saying the factory would be closed due to dwindling business since the pandemic began, and all employees would be terminated.
Workers would be given a month’s salary for every full year of employment, plus an additional one month of salary and a re-employment aid equal to two months of salaries, the company letter said.
Posts by workers on Chinese social media showed many were dissatisfied with the plan, as most had occupational ailments such as hearing impairments due to years of hard work in the plant.
“As an employee, we hope the company will provide a more reasonable compensation plan,” a worker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity
According to Korean news wire Yonhap News Agency, however, SHI sent an email statement saying the plant was closed due to “decreased productivity caused by its superannuated facilities.”
The statement also said the company had been in talks with the Chinese government to hand over the land and other assets of the Ningbo shipyard by early next year, and would now focus on the operation of its other Chinese shipbuilding plant in Rongcheng, Shandong Province.
Rumours about the Ningbo plant closure had been circulating for months before the official announcement. An official document published online in early July said the Beilun district government had signed an agreement with the shipyard to return the 1178-acre site.
In early August, the Beilun government responded on its official online forum that the land was taken back due to clean-up and remediation requirements of Qingzhi Chemical Industrial Zone, as the plant did not comply with the current policy preventing non-chemical plants from operating in the chemical industrial estate.
The next step is to introduce enterprises that conform to the current industry development orientation in accordance with environmental protection standards,” the official reply said.
Plans to take over the SHI Ningbo site were also mentioned in Beilun government’s half-year work report last August. The shipyard was targeted as part of an industrial upgrade aimed at “clearing the cage to make way for new birds” – a common saying meaning to replace old industries with new ones.
Beilun district government did not reply to a request for comment either.
The shipyard closure comes amid increasing competition between the world’s top two shipbuilders, China and South Korea, as well as increasing demand for shipping vessels during the pandemic.
South Korea secured 16 ship orders with a compensated gross tonnage (CGT) of 780,000 last month, while China received 23 vessel orders at 370,000 CGT, according to the latest statistics from Clarkson Research Services. The difference ultimately means South Korea will build more large ships.
To revive its shipbuilding industry, South Korean President Moon Jae-in announced a “K-shipbuilding take-off strategy” earlier this month at SHI’s shipyard in Geoje, near Busan, to become the world’s No 1 producer.
Moon wants to train 8,000 shipbuilders by next year, occupy 75 per cent of the global eco-friendly ship market and own half of the world’s autonomous ships in the next 10 years, local Korean media reported.
Established in 1995, the Ningbo operation is SHI’s first Chinese plant and the first wholly foreign-owned shipbuilder in China.
It specialised in the production of ship blocks with iron structures and produced 200,000 tonnes of blocks a year.

Two U.S.-listed Chinese education stocks plunged Friday after reports of a government crackdown on the sector that included bans on foreign investment.
TAL Education shares tumbled 70.8%. New Oriental Education and Technology shares dropped by 54.2%.
The reports come as Chinese authorities stepped up restrictions in recent months on the private education industry, and increased scrutiny on domestic companies listing overseas in the U.S.
Caixin, a major Chinese financial news site, reported Friday that new Chinese government restrictions on the education sector were starting to be implemented in Beijing and other cities nationwide.
Copies of the policy document were circulating online Friday afternoon.
Educational training institutions are banned from raising money through stock listings, while foreign capital cannot invest, according to a copy of the Chinese-language document seen and translated by CNBC. It was dated July 19 as issued from the top executive body — the State Council — and the Chinese Communist Party’s central committee.
One of the bans on foreign investment included variable interest entities, a common structure by which Chinese companies use to list in the U.S. Existing violations of the capital bans must be addressed, the document said.
CNBC has not independently verified the document. The Ministry of Education did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment outside of Beijing business hours.
A policy document of the same name — referring to lowering costs for after-school tutoring — was among five approved at a May 21 meeting chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The version circulating Friday banned after-school tutoring businesses from advertising, and said they could not operate during public holidays, weekends and winter and summer vacations.
New Oriental Education declined to comment to CNBC, and TAL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The stock plunges followed sharp declines for education stocks traded in Hong Kong, which began to drop in the afternoon.
Shares of New Oriental’s Hong Kong-listed subsidiary Koolearn fell 28% on Friday.
UBS analyst Felix Liu said in a note Friday the firm was putting its ratings on TAL, New Oriental and Koolearn under review “given the potential substantial impacts to fundamentals and the reported regulation pending official confirmation.”

The Cheesemaker Changing Chinese Food Culture
China may seem like the least likely place to find locally made artisanal cheeses—such as camembert, ricotta, and blue cheese—but Liu Yang, a Chinese cheesemaker, is changing that. Our host Nicola Davis visits Yang's cheese shop in Beijing, tries his handcrafted cheeses, and visits the dairy farm where he sources his milk from. As Yang talks about the young dairy industry in China, he believes his "customers need to be educated so they can understand, and fall in love with cheese culture."

I will take you guys to my grandfather's studio! He is actually an artist and he draws Traditional Chinese painting.
Today we will learn Chinese while he draws painting. It will be so interesting!
Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as guóhuà, meaning "national" or "native painting", as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th century. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used. As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. Traditional painting can also be done on album sheets, walls, lacquerware, folding screens, and other media.

Hong Kong's world-class health care system plagued by shortage of doctors
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://sc.mp/subscribe-youtube
Hong Kong has one of the world’s top-ranked medical services, providing the city’s 7.4 million people with care that has a good reputation for availability, affordability and quality.
But the universal, low-cost public health care system has a downside – including long waiting times and relatively less comfort and privacy than private-sector patients get.
The public system also faces a shortage of practitioners, a serious issue the city will increasingly have to grapple with as its population continues to grow and age.
Pressure on the public system has already started pushing patients – those who can afford it – to the private-sector medical care in Hong Kong is second-most expensive in the world, after ...

President Donald Trump, who put a hold on WHO funding yesterday, isn't absolved of his own failures in confronting COVID-19. But there's no doubt that the WHO's response destroyed much of its credibility, damaged the field of public health, and failed to contain the pandemic.
The WHO's actions in response to COVID-19, in part, stemmed from its overly deferential stance towards China, which is its second-biggest financial contributor among 194 member states.
"A phenomenal collective action by the people of China to this response" is how Bruce Aylward, head of the joint WHO-China mission, described China's handling of the outbreak on February 25, 2020, a day after WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised China's "rapid response," which he claimed "changed the course of this epidemic."
The WHO also praised China for releasing the virus's genome while neglecting to mention that it took them at least 17 days to do so. It didn't report human-to-human transmission until late January—even though Chinese doctors suspected it at least a month earlier. Although the extreme lockdown of Wuhan likely saved thousands of lives, WHO scientists weren't allowed into Wuhan until 3 weeks after the outbreak first came to light, leaving open many questions about measures the government took in the interim. Meanwhile, the WHO praised the country for its supposed openness.
"China took action at the epicenter, and that helped prevent the spread to other provinces and the rest of the world," Ghebreyesus said on February 15.
"As China has shown, this does not need to be a pandemic if we take action," WHO Executive Director Michael Ryan said on February 28.
As the virus continued spreading across Europe and reached America, the WHO recommended "no interference with international travel."
One country that ignored this advice was Taiwan, which also warned the WHO that it suspected that the virus was spreading through human-to-human transmission, yet was ignored. Taiwan, which has one of the lowest rates of known COVID-19 infections per capita, was prevented from joining the WHO as a member country in 2015 by China, which refuses to acknowledge Taiwan's independence.
In late March, World Health Organization epidemiologist Bruce Aylward declined to answer a Hong Kong reporter's question about Taiwan—or even acknowledge its existence.
As Taiwan was distributing face masks to its citizens, the WHO was advising the rest of the world that they were unnecessary—and initially, the Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Surgeon General followed its lead.
But health experts pointed to mounting evidence that masks can help slow the spread of respiratory disease, especially among asymptomatic carriers, a population that the WHO maintains is virtually nonexistent despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
In mid-February, the WHO trumpeted good news from China, claiming confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19 had declined, ignoring evidence that it may have been a statistical anomaly. U.S. intelligence, meanwhile, believes that China has entirely misrepresented both case numbers and death tolls, according to Bloomberg News.
Finally on March 11, after Italy was already in full national lockdown with more than 10,000 cases, the WHO finally acknowledged the true magnitude of the crisis, declaring a global pandemic.
As the death toll climbs above 100,000, the global economy remains in crisis, and billions of lives are disrupted, it's important to remember that if the World Health Organization had done its job, the nightmare we're living through might not have happened at all.

The World Health Organisation is “an iconic example” of a United Nations body which has “been subject to a hostile takeover by the Chinese state in recent years,” says the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's Michael Shoebridge

The move has been criticised as it is widely believed the deadly coronavirus pandemic initially stemmed from one such market in Wuhan, where rare and exotic animals are butchered and sold as food.
Mr Shoebridge said the world has "under-invested" in the WHO, meaning "they have been bought cheaply by China which is now using them for its political and strategic purposes".
"The WHO is meant to be the world’s high beam headlights to help prevent and contain pandemics, that’s its top priority," he said.
"But what we saw from the WHO, right from the start of the COVID pandemic was it acting like a rear-view mirror instead of high beam headlights”.

China's deadly coronavirus is becoming more infectious and carriers of the disease can pass it on even if they show no symptoms, China’s National Health Commission warned on Sunday.
Nearly 2,000 people in China have been infected and 56 killed by the disease, which originated in the city of Wuhan. Cases have now been reported across the globe, including in Thailand, Australia, the United States and France.

Pressure on the public system has already started pushing patients – those who can afford it – to the private-sector medical care in Hong Kong is second-most expensive in the world, after the United States.
