Will Allen (urban farmer)

Will Allen (born February 8, 1949) is an American urban farmer based in Milwaukee and a retired professional basketball player.

Basketball career

Will Allen was a high school state champion in basketball at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. Allen played collegiately for the Miami Hurricanes at the University of Miami, where he was on basketball scholarship. He was the first African-American to play basketball for the University of Miami.

After college Allen was selected by the Baltimore Bullets in the 4th round (60th pick overall) of the 1971 NBA Draft. He never played in the NBA, but appeared in seven games with The Floridians of the ABA during the 1971–72 season. He also played professionally in Belgium.

Allen retired from basketball in 1977, when he was 28. Upon retirement, Allen moved to Milwaukee, to his wife Cynthia's hometown.

Urban farming

Will Allen’s parents were sharecroppers in South Carolina until they bought the small vegetable farm in Rockville, Maryland, where Allen grew up.

Willie Allen (born June 15, 1980) is an American professional stock car racing driver. The 2007 Rookie of the Year in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

Career

Allen ran two ARCA Racing Series races in 2006, with a best finish of sixth at the second of the two at Nashville Superspeedway, and is a regular competitor at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville. Allen won the 2006 NASCAR points title for Music City Motorplex late model stock car division and the 2015 Big Machine Records Pro Late Model Challenge Series presented by Hunter Sand & Gravel championship at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville.

Camping World Truck Series

Allen made his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut in 2005 in the Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway driving for Morgan-Dollar Motorsports, starting 21st and finishing sixth. He made one more start in 2005 for SS-Green Light Racing before signing with ThorSport Racing to run the final race of 2006 and ultimately replace Kerry Earnhardt in the No. 13 truck for the 2007 season. Allen ran his first full season in NASCAR in 2007 and at the Mountain Dew 250 at Talladega Superspeedway, matched his career-best finish with a sixth-place run. Allen had three DNFs and led 29 laps on his way to finishing 15th in the standings and winning the Rookie of the Year award, however ThorSport elected not to retain him for the 2008 season, and Shelby Howard was signed to replace him.
