Plot: Leonardo Da Vinci was seen as a great artist during his lifetime. The same cannot be said for his life as an inventor. His genius as an inventor was only truly known through reading his secret manuscripts after his death. His want to invent was because of his curiosity and insatiable quest for knowledge. He was able to invent the earliest prototypes of such things as the steam cannon, the machine gun, the submarine, the depth charge, and the tank, all which were welcome inventions of the day for monarchs who saw their usefulness in warfare. But many of his other inventions such as the adjustable telescope, the flying machine, the parachute, the roller bearing, the universal joint, transmission gears, the camera, and the multiple belt drive were seen as evil since they went against conventional wisdom of the day. These views led to Da Vinci conducting his experiments in secret, the coded manuscripts from which which would ultimately show his true genius to future generations.

The genius of Leonardo da Vinci
Artist Leonardo da Vinci produced two of the most famous paintings in history, "The Last Supper" and the "Mona Lisa." But he was also passionate about medical discoveries and military inventions, some of which were centuries ahead of their time. Walter Isaacson, author of bestselling biographies of Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin, has written a new book about da Vinci, and he talks with Dr. Jon LaPook about why this Renaissance Man's mind and curiosity were so extraordinary.

Leonardo da Vinci (1/5): The artistic beginnings of the famous Italian painter
Leonardo spent his childhood with his grandfather Antonio in the Anchiano countryside, near Vinci. He was taken away from his mother Caterina, a woman of a very peculiar origin. He freely explored the natural environment surrounding him and soon discovered the myriad of living creatures that he admired and learned to love. When he turned 17, his father took him to Florence, the main artistic and humanistic center of Italy.

Beginning at the end of the 14th Century, the Renaissance created a new type of man, triggering economic, scientific, technical, religious, social and cultural developments that are unique in history.
Never before have culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within one century as during the Renaissance. But what was the catalyst for it, what is the "Renaissance factor"? The Renaissance is an epoch unique in human history: Never before have art, culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within a single century. We search for the "Renaissance factor", that combination of influences that triggered a pivotal period in history. It is a journey through time from Ancient Rome to the Crusades and the Black Death in the 14th century, events that defined the developments of the Renaissance. We travel with Michelangelo to the major construction site that was to become St. Peter’s Basilica, to the banking houses of the Medicis and the workshop of Johannes Gutenberg. We examine some of the many innovations of the Renaissance such as linear perspective, the printing press and double-entry bookkeeping. We ask what these achievements mean to us today and how - almost half a millennium later - we continue to benefit from the "Renaissance factor." And we delve deeper with the help of spectacular reenactments and our "special investigators" - modern-day trendsetters, scientists, business tycoons, fashion designers and artists.

The Mona Lisa is without doubt the most famous painting in the world, yet perhaps we are over familiar with her. Here I explain why I think it is not only a great painting but also a revolution in art.

Artist Leonardo da Vinci produced two of the most famous paintings in history, "The Last Supper" and the "Mona Lisa." But he was also passionate about medical discoveries and military inventions, some of which were centuries ahead of their time. Walter Isaacson, author of bestselling biographies of Steve Jobs,
Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin, has written a new book about da Vinci, and he talks with Dr. Jon LaPook about why this Renaissance Man's mind and curiosity were so extraordinary.

Young Leonardo is not accepted in the Platonic Academy because he is considered to be an "illiterate man", a disqualification he rejected, insisting that nature was his only master. He is accused of sodomy although he was later declared innocent. This episode deepened his inclination for a solitary life dedicated entirely to research and invention. He surpasses his master Verrocchio in the art of painting. He creates three paintings inspired by religious subjects.
