Vocal Lesson: Mike Ferfolia, professional vocalist and instructor at Metalworks Institute, teaches you how to sing background and backup vocals in this singing tutorial.
In this lesson, Mike talks about matching the vowel sounds of the lead singer by blending the harmony and lead parts together. While consonants will always sound similar no matter what, it is important that you are trying to match and even emulate the way the lead vocalist is singing vowels so that you can sound like them tonally. It is also important to rehearse with them before performing so that you can get a better grasp on their phrasing and timing when they sing. Mike says that "As a background singer it's your job to do just that. Sing in the background and basically make the lead singer look really good."
Beginner, intermediate and advanced vocalists are encouraged to practice these techniques. Follow these basic steps to improve you're effectiveness as a background singer dramatically!

If there's one rule for backing vocals in a mix it's this: support the lead vocal, don't compete with it.
As much as I love doubles, harmonies, and any other type of background vocal (I used to sing in an all-male a cappella group for 4 years for goodness sake!) I never let them sit side by side with the lead vocal. They need to be tucked under.
So in today's video, I'm going to show you a simple little trick you can use to make your backing vocals fit nice and snug alongside your lead and never take over.

Backing vocalist
Backing vocalists are singers who provide vocal harmony with the lead vocalist or other backing vocalists. In some cases, a backing singer may sing alone as a lead-in to the main vocalist's entry or to sing a counter-melody. Backing vocalists are used in a broad range of popular music, traditional music and world music styles.
Solo artists may employ professional backing vocalists in studio recording sessions as well as during concerts. In many rock and metal bands (e.g., the power trio), the musicians doing backup vocals also play instruments, such as guitar, electric bass, drums, or keyboards. In Latin or Afro-Cuban groups, backup singers may play percussion instruments or shakers while singing. In some pop and hip-hop groups and in musical theater, the backup singers may be required to perform elaborately choreographed dance routines while they sing through headset microphones.
The style of singing used by backup singers varies according to the type of song and the genre of music the band plays. In pop and country songs, backup vocalists may perform vocal harmony parts to support the lead vocalist. In hardcore punk or rockabilly, other band members who play instruments may sing or shout backup vocals during the chorus (refrain) section of the songs.

Singing
Singing is the act of producing musical sounds with the voice, and augments regular speech by the use of tonality, rhythm, the use of sustained tones and a variety of vocal techniques. A person who sings is called a singer or vocalist. Singers perform music (arias, recitatives, songs, etc.) that can be sung without accompaniment or with accompaniment by musical instruments. Singing is often done in a group of other musicians, such as in a choir of singers with different voice ranges, or in an ensemble with instrumentalists, such as a rock group or baroque ensemble. Singers may also perform as soloist with accompaniment from a piano (as in art song and in some jazz styles) or with a symphony orchestra or big band. There are a range of different singing styles, including art music styles such as opera and Chinese opera, religious music styles such as Gospel, traditional music styles, world music, jazz, blues and popular music styles such as pop and rock.
Singing can be formal or informal, arranged or improvised. Excellence in singing requires time, dedication, instruction, and regular practice. If practice is done on a regular basis then the sounds can become more clear and strong. Professional singers usually build their careers around one specific musical genre, such as classical or rock, although there are singers with crossover success (singing in more than one genre). Plot: Sugar Ray Five ~ Battle of the Bands Finalists/Winners 1984 - Sugar Ray Five were one of the six finalists and eventual winners of the 1984 Battle of the Bands Competition sponsored by TDK. The competition was held throughout the UK in which more than 1700 bands initially entered. Various Nationwide elimination heats were held in which Sugar Ray Five won each heat outright and were eventual outright winners at the Grand Final which was held at the world famous Hammersmith Odeon (now Hammersmith Apollo) in London in front of a capacity crowd and covered by the BBC. Sugar Ray Five completely annihilated the opposition on the night and ending up gaining 147 of the absolute maximum of 150 points available from the judges. Only ever performing original material the self-penned 7" single 'Lazy Hours' with 'March' on the flip side was released into the British charts the following year which received airplay on principal radio and TV but despite being rapidly tipped by the industry for great heights as a true force to be reckoned with in the mid-eighties music scene the group disbanded less than a year later.

Vocal Lesson: Mike Ferfolia, professional vocalist and instructor at Metalworks Institute, teaches you how to sing background and backup vocals in this singing tutorial.
In this lesson, Mike talks about matching the vowel sounds of the lead singer by blending the harmony and lead parts together. While consonants will always sound similar no matter what, it is important that you are trying to match and even emulate the way the lead vocalist is singing vowels so that you can sound like them tonally. It is also important to rehearse with them before performing so that you can get a better grasp on their phrasing and timing when they sing. Mike says that "As a background singer it's your job to do just that. Sing in the background and basically make the lead singer look really good."

Vocal Lesson: Mike Ferfolia, professional vocalist and instructor at Metalworks Institute, teaches you how to sing background and backup vocals in this singing tutorial.
In this lesson, Mike talks about matching the vowel sounds of the lead singer by blending the harmony and lead parts together. While consonants will always sound similar no matter what, it is important that you are trying to match and even emulate the way the lead vocalist is singing vowels so that you can sound like them tonally. It is also important to rehearse with them before performing so that you can get a better grasp on their phrasing and timing when they sing. Mike says that "As a background singer it's your job to do just that. Sing in the background and basically make the lead singer look really good."
Beginner, intermediate and advanced vocalists are encouraged to practice these techniques. Follow these basic steps to improve you're effectiveness as a background singer dramatically!

If there's one rule for backing vocals in a mix it's this: support the lead vocal, don't compete with it.
As much as I love doubles, harmonies, and any other type of background vocal (I used to sing in an all-male a cappella group for 4 years for goodness sake!) I never let them sit side by side with the lead vocal. They need to be tucked under.
So in today's video, I'm going to show you a simple little trick you can use to make your backing vocals fit nice and snug alongside your lead and never take over.

Backing vocalist
Backing vocalists are singers who provide vocal harmony with the lead vocalist or other backing vocalists. In some cases, a backing singer may sing alone as a lead-in to the main vocalist's entry or to sing a counter-melody. Backing vocalists are used in a broad range of popular music, traditional music and world music styles.
Solo artists may employ professional backing vocalists in studio recording sessions as well as during concerts. In many rock and metal bands (e.g., the power trio), the musicians doing backup vocals also play instruments, such as guitar, electric bass, drums, or keyboards. In Latin or Afro-Cuban groups, backup singers may play percussion instruments or shakers while singing. In some pop and hip-hop groups and in musical theater, the backup singers may be required to perform elaborately choreographed dance routines while they sing through headset microphones.
The style of singing used by backup singers varies according to the type of song and the genre of music the band plays. In pop and country songs, backup vocalists may perform vocal harmony parts to support the lead vocalist. In hardcore punk or rockabilly, other band members who play instruments may sing or shout backup vocals during the chorus (refrain) section of the songs.
