Ronald McDonald House Charities

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to create, find, and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children.

From early on, the organization had deep support from Ray Kroc's empire. Gerald Newman, Chief Accounting Officer for McDonald's Corporation, was "one of the founders of Ronald McDonald Children's Charities and was president of R.M.H.C."

RMHC has a global network of Chapters in 52 countries under three core programs, Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.

Programs

There are currently 322 Ronald McDonald's Houses in 57 countries and regions. Ronald McDonald Houses act as a place to stay for families with hospitalized children who are receiving treatment. Ronald McDonald's Houses provide over 7,200 bedrooms to families around the world each night, with an estimated value of $257 million in lieu of hotel costs.

There are currently 161 Ronald McDonald's Family Rooms in 19 countries and regions. These Rooms accommodate over 3,000 families each day who live in the local community and don't need to stay at a Ronald McDonald House. They provide a place for family members to rest, wash clothes, take a shower, or nap near the vicinity of their child.

Ronald McDonald

Ronald McDonald is a clown character used as the primary mascot of the McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain. In television commercials, the clown inhabits a fantasy world called McDonaldland, and has adventures with his friends Mayor McCheese, the Hamburglar, Grimace, Birdie the Early Bird, and The Fry Kids. In recent years, McDonaldland has been largely phased out, and Ronald is instead shown interacting with normal children in their everyday lives.

Many people work full-time making appearances in the Ronald McDonald costume, visiting children in hospitals, and attending regular events. There are also Ronald McDonald Houses, where parents can stay overnight when visiting sick children in nearby chronic care facilities.

History

Willard Scott

The origin of Ronald McDonald involves Willard Scott (at the time, a local radio personality who also played Bozo the Clown on WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. from 1959 until 1962), who performed using the moniker "Ronald McDonald, the Hamburger-Happy Clown" in 1963 on three separate television spots. These were the first three television ads featuring the character.

Ranald MacDonald

Ranald MacDonald (February 3, 1824 – August 24, 1894) was the first native English-speaker to teach the English language in Japan, including educating Einosuke Moriyama, one of the chief interpreters to handle the negotiations between Commodore Perry and the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Early life

MacDonald was born at Fort Astoria, in the Pacific Northwest of North America. The area was then known as the Columbia District or Oregon Country, disputed territory dominated by the British Hudson's Bay Company and the American Pacific Fur Company. MacDonald's father was Archibald McDonald, a Scottish Hudson's Bay Company fur trader, and his mother was Raven (also known as Princess Sunday), a Chinook, daughter of Chief Comcomly, a leader of Chinook people from the Cascade Mountains and Cape Disappointment. MacDonald was a member of the larger Métis community.

Based on the popular historical fiction of Eva Emery Dye, it has been repeated that "as a child of eight in 1832 at Fort Vancouver, he met three shipwrecked Japanese sailors, including Otokichi". In reality the three shipwrecked Japanese sailors were brought to Ft. Vancouver in the spring of 1834 [not 1832], arriving there about 6 weeks after 10-yr-old Ranald MacDonald had departed for Red River - so there never was the fabled meeting of east and west. MacDonald's Indian relatives might have had legends that their ancestors had come from across the Pacific, but saying that MacDonald "developed a fascination with Japan" and "theorized that it might be the home of his distant relatives" may or may not be accurate. In his autobiography MacDonald explained it in his own words: "My plan was to present myself as a castaway ... and to rely on their humanity. My purpose was to learn of them; and, if occasion should offer, to instruct them of us."
