Upper and Lower Motor Neuron Lesions | UMN vs LMN, Differences and Mnemonic
Lesson on differences between Upper and Lower Motor Neuron Lesions. Upper motor neurons (UMN) are located within the brain and brainstem and send their axons down the spinal cord to innervate lower motor neurons (LMN). Lower motor neurons (LMN) are located within the ventral horn of the spinal cord and send their axons towards the periphery to innervate skeletal muscles. Lesions in upper and lower motor neurons have characteristic differences.
In this lesson you will learn what upper motor neurons and lower motor neurons are, where they are located in the central nervous system and what happens when their is a lesion or damage to them. You will also learn the reason for the characteristic differences between lesions in UMN and LMN.

The Man With The Half-Metre Penis
SUBSCRIBE to Barcroft TV: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj
The man with the world’s longest penis has rejected the possibility of having a reduction - even if it means abandoning any hope of a normal sex life or having children. Roberto Esquivel Cabrera, 54, from Saltillo, Mexico, has a penis measuring a colossal 18.9 inches. He made headlines worldwide in 2015 after a video went viral showing him weighing his colossal member to prove its authenticity. His half-metre penis smashed the record previously believed to have belonged to American actor Jonah Falcon, whose penis was 9.5 inches flaccid, and 13.5 inches when erect. Speaking to Barcroft TV, Roberto said: "I am famous because I have the biggest penis in the world."

Veterinarian Dr. Marc Smith explains "Cold Tail" or "Limpy Tail", a syndrome that causes temporary paralysis of the tail in dogs.
Lab Cold Tail, also called "Limpy Tail" is a syndrome affecting certain breeds of primarily hunting dogs i.e. Labs, Pointers and such.
The tail just quits working! Most of these dogs become painful and frustrated as you can see.
Treatment is rest and symptomatic therapy. Resolution occurs in about two weeks.
Lab cold tail can be confused with trauma to the tail.
Oftentimes, an X-ray may be indicated to differentiate the two!
Another treatment option that I have used is acupuncture at the base of the tail. We insert needles perpendicular to the skin at the base of the tail and stimulate the needles with an electroacupuncture machine. This technique aids in alleviating pain, swelling, inflammation, and discomfort!
Alright this is Sunny, a 1-year-old lab, non-spayed female Labrador retriever that was presented to me. This is a great case for a syndrome that happens commonly in labs called “cold tail”.
There are a bunch of different names for it, one is called cold tail, and you’ll also see limpy tail.
I want to take you through a scenario that kind of explains this. So Christy, can you give me a history on this? Sunny has been in pretty heavy training for duck hunting.
She’s been doing a lot of swimming, long retrieves, several hundred yards, for two days in a row. On the second day on her way back from the lake her tail drooped down, and I was concerned about it so I wanted you to see it. I had a suspicion that it was cold tail but I just wanted you to see it.
So, as you can see when she walks around, you can see that her tail is real flaccid and she doesn’t have much balance on it, she doesn’t move it around very well. If you try to make her sit it bothers her, she doesn’t have a lot of control over it and so it causes a lot of frustration in these dogs.
And so, let's watch her sit. She doesn’t want to, she presents it to the side because it is frustrating to her.
So what is going to happen? Well as a veterinarian, an animal will come in and basically, there’s a couple of differentials and one of them is this, limpy tail. Another one is some sort of trauma to a tail, so sometimes you may need to take an x-ray of it; you must decide whether the tail is broken.
But with most of them, when it’s a lab and it has a limp tail and when you have a history of exercise, then you pretty much have your diagnosis.
Generally, these animals are frustrated, they are painful, and we’re not sure what causes it. There’s probably some sort of genetic component to it, but basically the vesicles in the nerves back there, for some reason, they don’t function properly. It could be a neurogenic reflex, it could be some kind of a vascular problem, we just don’t know.
Basically, you just have to control the pain, control the inflammation, and it will resolve over about a 10-14 day period, sometimes longer sometimes shorter.
Hey Christy, was there one thing you could say that contributed to it, so in other words, did you increase the swimming, did you do anything that may have caused this?
I would say the swimming, and especially swimming the long distance probably was the biggest thing. I would say that the fact that she was having to use her tail while she was swimming was probably a major contributing factor to it. She’s been doing a lot of swimming retrieves but this was like 300 yards, and she probably did it 8 times in the past two days.
So you ramped up the swimming, was it in a pond or—
Yes, it was in a pretty large pond.
And how long have you been swimming her? She’s been swimming her whole life but this was a pretty, you know, such a further distance. And asking her to do a lot more, it was just too much.
So I hope that explains and you can see a clinical presentation for what we call a “limpy tail”, which is a pretty cool name.

Rabies is a severe encephalitis transmitted to humans by the bite of a rabid animal, usually a dog or various wild mammals that form natural reservoirs. Exposure to certain species of bats, even without a known bite, can also lead to rabies.
Clinical Features:
Since the virus enters the CNS by ascending along the peripheral nerves from the wound site, the incubation period (commonly between 1 and 3 months) depends on the distance between the wound and the brain. The disease begins with nonspecific symptoms of malaise, headache, and fever, but the conjunction of these symptoms with local paresthesias around the wound is diagnostic. As the infection advances, the affected individual exhibits extraordinary CNS excitability; the slightest touch is painful, with violent motor responses progressing to convulsions. Contracture of the pharyngeal musculature on swallowing produces foaming at the mouth, which may create an aversion to swallowing even water (hydrophobia). There is meningismus and, as the disease progresses, flaccid paralysis. Periods of alternating mania and stupor progress to coma and death from respiratory failure.
