Republic

A republic (from Latin: res publica) is a sovereign state or country which is organised with a form of government in which power resides in elected individuals representing the citizen body and government leaders exercise power according to the rule of law. In modern times, the definition of a republic is commonly limited to a government which excludes a monarch. Currently, 147 of the world's 206 sovereign states use the word "republic" as part of their official names; not all of these are republics in the sense of having elected governments, nor do all nations with elected governments use the word "republic" in their names.

Both modern and ancient republics vary widely in their ideology and composition. In the classical and medieval period of Europe, many states were fashioned on the Roman Republic, which referred to the governance of the city of Rome, between it having kings and emperors. The Italian medieval and Renaissance political tradition, today referred to as "civic humanism", is sometimes considered to derive directly from Roman republicans such as Sallust and Tacitus. However, Greek-influenced Roman authors, such as Polybius and Cicero, sometimes also used the term as a translation for the Greek politeia which could mean regime generally, but could also be applied to certain specific types of regime which did not exactly correspond to that of the Roman Republic. Republics were not equated with classical democracies such as Athens, but had a democratic aspect.

European Union

The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It covers an area of 4,324,782 km², with an estimated population of over 508 million. The EU operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions by the member states. The institutions are: the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the Court of Auditors. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens.

The EU has developed an internal single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area, passport controls have been abolished. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade,agriculture,fisheries, and regional development. The monetary union was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002. It is currently composed of 19 member states that use the euro as their legal tender.

Chancellor of Germany

The Chancellor of Germany is the head of government of Germany. The official title in German is Bundeskanzler(-in) (literally, Federal Chancellor), sometimes shortened to Kanzler(-in). The term, dating from the early Middle Ages, is derived from the Latin term cancellarius.

In German politics the Chancellor is equivalent to that of a prime minister in many other countries. German has two equivalent translations of prime minister, Premierminister and Ministerpräsident. While Premierminister usually refers to heads of governments of foreign countries (e.g., Great Britain), Ministerpräsident may also refer to the heads of government of most German states.

The current Chancellor is Angela Merkel, who is serving her third term in office. She is the first female chancellor, thus being known in German as Bundeskanzlerin. That particular word was never used officially before Merkel, but it is a grammatically regular formation of a noun denoting a female chancellor.

The modern office of Chancellor evolved from the position created for Otto von Bismarck in the North German Confederation in 1867; the Confederation evolved into a German nation-state with the 1871 Unification of Germany. The role of the Chancellor has varied greatly throughout Germany's modern history. Today, the Chancellor is widely considered to be the country's effective leader.

Leon Trotsky

Leon Trotsky (/ˈtrɒtski/;Russian: Лев Дави́дович Тро́цкий; pronounced [ˈlʲɛf ˈtrotskʲɪj]; born Lev Davidovich Bronstein;7 November [O.S. 26 October] 1879 – 21 August 1940) was a Marxist revolutionary and theorist, Soviet politician, and the founding leader of the Red Army.

Trotsky initially supported the Menshevik Internationalists faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. He joined the Bolsheviks immediately prior to the 1917 October Revolution, and eventually became a leader within the Communist Party. He was, alongside Lenin, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Stalin, Sokolnikov and Bubnov, one of the seven members of the first Politburo, founded in 1917 in order to manage the Bolshevik Revolution. During the early days of the RSFSR and the Soviet Union, he served first as People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army with the title of People's Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs. He was a major figure in the Bolshevik victory in the Russian Civil War (1918–1923).

On 27 October 2005, Bouna Traore (15) and Zyed Benna (17) two innocent teenagers, had finished playing football near their home in the Parisian suburb of Clicy-Souis Bois and were making their way back to their families. Such was their fear of the police, that when the Police approached them to carry out identity check, they ran. The teenagers were chased into a power station, accompanied by a friend Muhittin Altun. Bouna and Zyed were fatally electrocuted and Muhittin was left with severe burns. Riots immediately followed and swept through France. It took 10 years for the two police officers to finally brought to court to face charges of “failure to assist a person in danger” and “deliberately endangering the lives of others”. They were both acquitted of all charges. Following the verdict, Adel Benna Zyed’s brother said, "Police officers are untouchable. It's not just in this case, they are never convicted". This documentary written, produced and directed by two lawyers in England was filmed in Paris over a four year period (2011-2015). It tells the story of a fight for equality, liberty and brotherhood (liberté, égalité, fraternité). The the three fundamental pillars of the French Republic. The film focuses on the controversial use of identity checks by the police in France and allegations that they have been used in an oppressive and discriminatory manner. The film looks at potential solutions and ideas to improve the situation and contains interviews carried out with people from different backgrounds, professions, races and religions. Identity checks touch on many key issues for French society. Therefore, the film takes us on an analytical journey through recent French history reviewing the social, political and legal climate. To this day, France is riddled with widespread fear over immigration. Paris is in a state of emergency following the horrific recent terror attacks. The European Union is morally and culturally bankrupt, according to German philosopher and historian Ulrike Guérot. It’s time to put the EU project to its grave. Guérot envisions a European republic that consists of 50 regions around clusters of big cities, with a recognizable identity and shared economic and cultural interest. A decisive Europe that reinvents itself. With her book Why Europe Must Become a Republic, she positions herself in a tradition of politically utopian thinkers. After having worked for almost twenty years on the building of the European Union, within various EU think tanks, it all suddenly became clear to her during the bailout of Cyprus in 2013: this Europe is bankrupt. Subsequently, one crisis followed the other: Greece, Brexit, refugees. With the capper being the election year we’re facing in Germany, France and the Netherlands, while Brussels doesn’t have a clear answer to the increasing criticism by the growing populist parties. Guérot compares the state of the current European Union with the WTC during the attacks on 9/11. We stand by and watch how everything collapses. If we do nothing, this European Union will not hold its position up.It's not the many crises in themselves that show a moral and cultural bankruptcy, but the way the European Union deals with it, according to Guérot. This European Union has become a union of money. Guérot says our values must be rated differently: away from the failed nation states in which many people no longer recognize themselves nor feel represented. In the Middle Ages, Europe knew more than 50 different regions. These regions around town nodes should become the new provinces of the European Republic in which everyone is equal. Le Maroc est traditionnellement une terre d'accueil. Et dans un contexte actuel mondial où les flux migratoires s'intensifient, le Maroc voit son rôle prendre de plus en plus d'importance. Aux portes de l'Europe, le Maroc voit arriver de plus en plus d'immigrés, essentiellement des sub-sahariens, dont le seul but est de se rendre vers les pays du nord. Mais d'autres, moins nombreux, arrivent au Maroc non par choix, mais par obligation. Pour des raisons de conflits sociaux, religieux ou autres, quelques africains, iraquiens ou encore palestiniens débarquent au Maroc en espérant trouver refuge : ils acquièrent le statut de réfugiés politiques.Ils sont environ mille au Maroc à posséder une carte de réfugié politique, délivrée par le Haut Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les Réfugiés (UNHCR). Originaires de la Côte d'Ivoire, du Togo, de la République Démocratique du Congo, de la Palestine ou encore de l'Iraq, ils ont tous fuient leur pays d'origine, craignant pour leur vie et à la recherche d'un quotidien meilleur. Mais posséder cette carte ne facilite guère la vie sur le territoire marocain. Elle ne donne pas accès au marché du travail, au logement, aux services de santé, à la scolarité... Et ne garantit pas l'obtention d'une carte de séjour marocaine.La plupart vivent dans des conditions très précaires, et leur quotidien est très difficile. Mais le UNHCR, en partenariat avec des associations, tentent de pousser le gouvernement marocain à changer sa législation, et de trouver des solutions afin d'améliorer ce quotidien.
