Why extremist militias are on the rise in the West African Sahel | DW News
The West Sahel is becoming Africa's hotbed of terrorism. The Sahel is dry, hot and vast, so it's difficult to govern. That provides room for criminals who've trafficked people, weapons and drugs for years. People are being displaced in the Sahel, by the thousands every single day. They're running away from violence perpetrated by extremist groups. Last year more than 700,00 people fled their homes. Among the perpetrators of the violence are islamist militant groups like Boko Haram, ISGS and JNIM, which are known to massacre communities and raze entire villages. These groups have become a constant threat and now control large parts of the region. Why West Africa Produces So Much Talent! | Explained
On this edition of Euro Football Daily Explained, we are exploring why West Africa and other nations on the Gulf of Guinea have been so prolific at producing talent in Football.
We look at the legacy of colonialism in the region, and how that has impacted the migratory routes which are available to players out of the continent. In particular, those coming from former Francophone nations like Senegal, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire, who are regular features in the French Football pyramid. To contrast this, we look at the journey Fenerbahce forward Mbwana Samatta faced arriving to the Premier League from Tanzania.
Then we look at the academies that have produced some of the Premier Leagues biggest stars, such as Patrick Vieira’s Diambars FC, and the highly successful ASEC Mimosas academy in Côte d...

West Africa: Meet the African-Americans returning to the continent
Last year, to mark four centuries since the start of slavery, Ghana launched a project to encourage people of African descent from around the world to visit their motherland. As a result, some 750,000 people heeded the call and travelled to the country in 2019. But some African-Americans have gone even further and have answered the call to settle and invest on the continent, transforming their trauma into an entrepreneurial force. Our West Africa correspondents report from Togo and Benin.

Many thanks to Afia Tours (https://www.afiatours-ghana.com/) for taking on this amazing village food day trip in Ghana (Note: I paid for this tour, it is not sponsored, but I fully recommend it - it was awesome)!
It was about a three hour drive from Accra to get to the village. The village was somewhere in the central Cape Coast region of Ghana (however no near to the coast, but much inland). The people from the village were so incredibly friendly, and it was one of the most genuinely hospitable and friendly villages I’ve ever visited. It was an honor and privilege to spend time at the village.
As we arrived, they had already started cooking some Ghanaian food specialties. One the menu, we had banku with okra soup, fufu (a staple of West African food) with palm nut soup, and finally fried plantains with beans. All the food was incredibly good, and it was one of the best bowls of fufu I ate during my entire time in Ghana.
Thanks again to Afia Tours (https://www.afiatours-ghana.com/) for setting this up!

Armed militias are gaining ground, despite massive military interventions. These groups have resources and man power.
Mali has been most affected by the crisis and it's the country where it all began. In 2012 seperatists and groups linked to al-qaeda took over the northern part of the country. Military efforts to flush them out were unsuccessful.
And now barely a decade later, armed groups are popping up in other parts of Mali. To date, much of the conflict has been between the country's two dominant ethnic groups, the muslim Fulani and the Dogon.

Then we look at the academies that have produced some of the Premier Leagues biggest stars, such as Patrick Vieira’s Diambars FC, and the highly successful ASEC Mimosas academy in Côte d’Ivoire.
But we also explore the dark side of player procurement in Africa, to understand some of the morally questionable practises that go on from agents and foreign clubs which exploit the region.
And finally we go to Nigeria, and see how some of the brightest of talents have emerged from the toughest of locations.
