Elliot

Elliot (also spelled Eliot,Elliott,Eliott and Elyot) is a personal name which can serve as either a surname or a given name. Although the given name was historically given to males, females named Elliot have increased from 414 in 2009 to 770 in 2013. The origin of the surname is obscure, perhaps due to much of the genealogy of the Eliott clan being burnt in the destruction of the castle at Stobs in 1712 AD. The clan society usually accepts that the name originated from the town and river Elliot in Angus, Scotland. Some other sources suggest it may be derived from a French form of Elias, which is itself derived from the biblical name "Elijah". Yet other sources claim that the Scottish surnames (Eliott, Elliot) originate from the Ellot Scottish border-clan, from a transformation of the name Elwold. There are also records in the Domesday Book of the name spelled "Ailiet", thought to originate from an old English name "Æþelgeat" (meaning "noble gate") and leading to the English and Scottish given name spelled "Elyat", which in turn leads to the modern alternative spelling of the name "Elyot".

Elliott (band)

Elliott was an American post-hardcore band from Louisville, Kentucky. They released three albums and several 7"s in their eight-year existence, and were signed to Revelation Records.

History

Formation

The group was formed in 1995 after the demise of lauded Louisville hardcore outfit Falling Forward. FF drummer Ben Lord soon left the band, so new drummer Kevin Ratterman was recruited, joining Chris Higdon (vocals/guitar), Jay Palumbo (guitar) and Jonathan Mobley (bass). Ratterman (who was also a producer and an engineer) would go on to play a large part in writing and producing Elliott's music.

In Transit and US Songs (1997–1998)

In 1997, Elliott released their debut 7", In Transit. Their first full-length, US Songs, followed in 1998.

False Cathedrals (2000)

2000's False Cathedrals was a more polished affair than its predecessor, featuring vocal harmonies and more piano than US Songs. False Cathedrals is Elliott's most popular release. It was met with critical acclaim by a broad cross-section of the underground rock community. According to Revelation Records, it is amongst the highest selling albums in the label's back-catalogue.

Elliott (Pittsburgh)

Elliott is a small, hilly neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's West End Region. Elliott is represented on the Pittsburgh City Council by the council member for District 2 (West Neighborhoods), and uses the ZIP code 15220.

History

Beginning as a portion of the now-defunct Township of Chartiers and existing for a brief time as an independent borough, Elliott was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in two pieces; the southern half in 1906 and the northern half in 1921. Elliott grew quickly during this time as a dense and thriving residential community, due to its proximity to downtown Pittsburgh and direct access to several arterial roads and streetcar lines. In the latter half of the twentieth century, however, the neighborhood was affected adversely by industrial decline, economic hardship, and mass emigration to Pittsburgh's then developing suburbs, as well as numerous other socioeconomic factors that affected the region at that time. Today, the West End Elliott Citizens Council is an active community group located in the heart of the neighborhood and is working to help reverse this deterioration. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire houses Engine 30 and Truck 30 in Elliott.

J. Drew (dates unknown) was an English amateur cricketer who played first-class cricket in 1795 for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), of which he was a member, and Sir Horatio Mann's XI, the latter an indication of his connection with Kent cricket. He held the rank of captain in the British armed forces.

Drew made 3 known first-class appearances. Playing for MCC against the Thursday Club at Lord's Old Ground on 2 May 1795, he scored 0 and 3. He then played for Sir Horatio Mann's XI at Dandelion Paddock against the Earl of Darnley's XI on 10 September, scoring 2 and 0. On 14 September, again playing for Sir Horatio Mann's team, he faced R Leigh's XI at Dandelion Paddock and scored a pair (i.e., 0 and 0).

Inland Type Foundry

The Inland Type Foundry was an American type foundry established in 1894 in Saint Louis, Missouri and later with branch offices in Chicago and New York City. Although it was founded to compete directly with the "type trust" (American Type Founders), and was consistently profitable, it was eventually sold to A.T.F,.

History

Inland was founded by the three sons of Carl Schraubstadter, one of the owners of the Central Type Foundry which had shut down upon being sold to A.T.F. in 1892. William A. Schraubstadter had been superintendent of the old foundry and, not being offered a similar position in the consolidation, founded Inland with his two brothers, Oswald and Carl Jr. At first the foundry sold type made by the Keystone Type Foundry and the Great Western Type Foundry, but soon enough was cutting and casting faces of their own. All three brothers were familiar with the foundry business and quite soon the firm began making type that was "state of the art," being point-set and having a common base-line for all faces of the same body size. This last feature was a recent innovation and, as Inland had no back stock of non-linging faces, they advertised this heavily as "Standard Line Type."
