Paso Robles, California

Paso Robles /pæsəˈroʊbəlz/ (full name: El Paso de Robles 'The Pass of the Oaks') is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. Located on the Salinas River north of San Luis Obispo, California, the city is known for its hot springs, its abundance of wineries, production of olive oil, almond orchards, and for playing host to the California Mid-State Fair.

Geography

Paso Robles is located at 35°37′36″N 120°41′24″W / 35.62667°N 120.69000°W / 35.62667; -120.69000, approximately halfway between the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Paso Robles is where the region of Southern California ends. The elevation of Paso Robles ranges from 675 to 1,100 feet (340 m), but the majority of the main downtown area of the city sits at about 740 feet (230 m) above sea level. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Paso Robles city limits contain a total land area of 19.4 sq mi (50.3 km²), 98.43% of it land and 1.57% of it water.

Paso Robles Wine Country is an American Viticultural Area located in the San Luis Obispo County, California. It has approximately 26,000 vineyard acres planted with wine grapes, and is well known for its heritage varietal Zinfandel and Rhône-style wines.

History

Grapes were first introduced into the Paso Robles area in 1797 by missionaries at Mission San Miguel Arcangel, where more than one thousand vines were planted. Commercial wine growing, however, wasn't started until the 1880s with the establishment of Ascension Winery, today known as York Mountain Winery, the longest continuously operating winery in the County. Among the winery’s early producers following prohibition was Polish pianist and composer Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

Since 1990, when there were fewer than 20 wineries in Paso Robles, a large expansion of activity has seen the number rise to more than 200 wineries today. Wine critic Robert M. Parker, Jr. commented on the region's promise of quality of wine, emphasizing the wineries Alban Vineyards, L'Aventure, Linne Calodo, Saxum Vineyards, Villa Creek Cellars, Castoro Cellars and Tablas Creek Vineyard as the "leading Paso pioneers".

Paso Robles station

Paso Robles is a passenger train station in Paso Robles, California, United States served by Amtrak, the national railroad passenger system.

Routes serving this station include the Coast Starlight. It also serves the Pacific Surfliner and the San Joaquins via Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach).

It is an unstaffed station and therefore does not offer ticket sales or checked luggage services. However, the new station building serves as an enclosed waiting area for passengers The adjacent historic station building has been renovated into small shops.

Of the 74 California stations served by Amtrak, Paso Robles was the 56th-busiest in FY2012, boarding or detraining an average of approximately 32 passengers daily.
