Miri Regev

Miriam "Miri" Regev (Hebrew: מרים "מירי" רגב‎, born Miriam Siboni on May 26, 1965) is an Israeli politician and a former Brigadier-general in the Israel Defense Forces, in which she served as IDF Spokeswoman. She is currently a member of the Knesset for Likud and Minister of Culture and Sport.

Biography

Regev was born in Kiryat Gat in 1965 to Moroccan Jewish immigrant parents. In 1983 she joined the Gadna, where she became a platoon commander, serving in the position until 1986. She has a Master's Degree in Business and a Bachelor's Degree in Informal Education. She is married and has three children.

Revital Madar, a Tunisian-Israeli writer in Haaretz, has argued that Miri Regev had faced discrimination within the Likud hierarchy due to the fact that she is a Moroccan woman, whose forthright behaviour is perceived as being stereotypically Mizrahi.

Public relations career

She then began serving as the IDF Spokesperson's representative in the Israeli Southern Command. Regev was promoted to a Colonel rank for the position of Deputy IDF Spokesperson in 2002. In 2003, she was appointed coordinator of the national public relations efforts at the Israeli Prime Minister's Office in preparation for the Iraq War. After a short stint (2004–2005) as the Chief Press and Media Censor, she was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and to the position of IDF Spokesperson in 2005. She served in this position during Israel's disengagement from Gaza in 2005 and the 2006 Lebanon War. In 2007, she was discharged and was succeeded by Avi Benayahu.

Miri, Malaysia

Miri /ˈmɪriː/ (Jawi: ميري‎; Chinese: 美里; pinyin: Méi lǐ) is a coastal city in northeastern Sarawak, Malaysia, located near the border of Brunei, on the island of Borneo. The city covers an area of 997.43 square kilometres (385.11 sq mi), located 798 kilometres (496 mi) northeast of Kuching and 329 kilometres (204 mi) southwest of Kota Kinabalu. Miri is the second largest city in Sarawak, with a population of 234,541. The city is also the capital of Miri District of the Miri Division.

Before Miri was founded, Marudi was the administrative centre of the northern region of Sarawak. Miri was founded in 1910 when the first oil well was drilled by Royal Dutch Shell. The discovery of an oil field in Miri has led to rapid development of Miri town. Miri became the administrative centre of the northern region of Sarawak by 1929. During World War II, the Miri oil fields were destroyed by the Brooke government to sabotage Japanese operations in Southeast Asia but to no avail; Miri town was the first landing point of Japanese troops in Borneo. The subsequent Japanese occupation led Miri to become a target of Allied air raids which caused the destruction of oil refinery facilities in Miri. The petroleum industry continued to be a major player in the city's economy after the war. Oil exploration has moved offshore since the 1950s, but subsequently new inland oil fields were found in 1989 and 2011. In 1974, the formation of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas led to co-operation between Petronas and Shell on oil exploration in the Miri region. In 2005, Miri became the 10th city in Malaysia to be granted official city status, the first non-state capital city to be bestowed such status.

"Miri" is the eighth episode of the first season of the science fiction television series, Star Trek, that was first broadcast October 27, 1966, and repeated June 29, 1967. It was written by Adrian Spies and directed by Vincent McEveety.

In the plot, the Enterprise discovers an exact duplicate of Earth, where the only survivors of a deadly man-made plague are some of the planet's children.

Plot

The Enterprise answers a distress call from a planet resembling Earth in every detail. Captain Kirk assembles a landing party of himself, First Officer Spock, Chief Medical Officer Dr. McCoy, Yeoman Janice Rand and two security personnel to investigate. They find an apparently-abandoned, 1960 Earth. When they examine a tricycle they are attacked by a strong, disfigured man. After Kirk hits the man three times, the man has a seizure and dies. A mysterious figure catches their attention, and they investigate.

They discover a terrified, apparently-normal girl, Miri (Kim Darby), who says that she ran away from them because "grups" ("grownups") killed and maimed children before dying. She and her friends are "onlies", the only ones left; the adults are dead.
