Ontology-based workflow extraction from texts using word sense disambiguation
Author:
Ahmed Halioui, The Université du Québec à Montréal
Abstract:
This paper introduces a method for automatic workflow extraction from texts using Process-Oriented Case-Based Reasoning (POCBR). While the current workflow management systems implement mostly different complicated graphical tasks based on advanced distributed solutions (e.g. cloud computing and grid computation), workflow knowledge acquisition from texts using case-based reasoning represents more expressive and semantic cases representations. We propose in this context, an ontology-based workflow extraction framework to acquire processual knowledge from texts. Our methodology extends classic NLP techniques to extract and disambiguate tasks in texts. Using a graph-based representation of workflows and a domain ontology, ...

Mujahed, Mujahedin leads here. For other uses, see Mujahed (disambiguation) and Mujahedin (disambiguation)
Mujahideen (Arabic: مجاهد muǧāhid, nominative plural مجاهدون muǧāhidūn, oblique plural مجاهدين muǧāhidīn "strugglers" or "people doing jihad") is a term that Muslims use to describe those they see as Muslims who struggle in the path of Allah. The word is from the same Arabic triliteral root as jihad ("struggle"). In recent years, Mujahideen has been most closely associated by the west with radical Islam, encompassing several militant groups and struggles.

Session 4. Linked geographical data and web-mapping
Thursday Feb 11, 16:00 UK = 17:00 CET
Convenors: Anne Chen (Yale), Rainer Simon (Austrian Institute of Technology), Valeria Vitale (British Library)
Session outline
In this class we will introduce historical gazetteers, and discuss their scope, structure, and applications, especially in the study of ancient cultural heritage. We will analyse how information in gazetteers is organised, and how the data models help us codify and compare our knowledge of the places of the past. We will examine, in particular, the Pleiades Gazetteer of the Ancient World and the role it played in a number of Linked Open Data projects. We will focus on a use case, learning how the urban gazetteer of the ancien...

Our methodology extends classic NLP techniques to extract and disambiguate tasks in texts. Using a graph-based representation of workflows and a domain ontology, our extraction process uses a context-based approach to recognize workflow components : data and control flows. We applied our framework in a technical domain in bioinformatics : i.e. phylogenetic analyses. An evaluation based on workflow semantic similarities on a gold standard proves that our approach provides promising results in the process extraction domain. Both data and implementation of our framework are available in : http://labo.bioinfo.uqam.ca/tgrowler.

MEMS COLLOQUIUM LECTURE
Michael D. Danti, Assistant Professor of Archaeology, Boston University; Consulting Scholar, University of Pennsylvania Museum; and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London
Syria and Iraq are facing the worst cultural heritage crisis since the Second World War. Michael Danti's talk will address one of the greatest challenges: the cultural cleansing perpetrated by the so-called Islamic State (or ISIS) and the work of the American Schools of Oriental Research to safeguard cultural assets.
The American Schools of Oriental Research Cultural Heritage Initiatives (ASOR CHI) work with Syrians and Iraqis to safeguard cultural sites and objects from neglect, damage, destruction, and theft as part of a program developed with the U.S. Department of State. Among the many atrocities perpetrated by ISIS is the deliberate destructions of historic mosques, churches, schools, monasteries, and cemeteries, as well as numerous famous monuments at archaeological sites such as Palmyra, Nimrud, Nineveh, Hatra, and the Old City of Mosul. ISIS brazenly commits these war crimes to advance its radical ideology and gain global media exposure. At the same time, the organization funds its terrorist activities through the looting of cultural property from archaeological sites, museums, libraries, and private collections. Irreplaceable ancient and medieval heritage, embedded in the urban fabric and daily life of modern communities, is endangered as extremists erase cultural memory, manipulate cultural identity, and eliminate cultural diversity.
Bio:
Michael D. Danti is an archaeologist who specializes in the ancient Near East. His interests center on the emergence of complex societies, agropastoral economies, tribe-state relations and pastoral nomadic societies. He directs archaeological projects in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syria, focusing on the Bronze and Iron Ages. From 1991 to 2010, Dr. Danti’s research focused on the Early Bronze Age site of Tell es-Sweyhat near Raqqa and Aleppo on the Euphrates River. He is a principal investigator for the American Schools of Oriental Research's Cultural Heritage Initiatives (ASOR CHI). ASOR is an international, collaborative effort to respond to the destruction of cultural heritage in Syria and northern Iraq. Groups of concerned citizens in Syria and Iraq have been taking action, and ASOR's international team has formed alliances and partnerships with these groups.

We will focus on a use case, learning how the urban gazetteer of the ancient city of Dura Europos was born, in what directions is developing, and how can it be used in the future to enhance the knowledge of the place. Finally, we will show how gazetteers have been applied by the Pelagios Project to build an online platform, Recogito, that enables us to annotate geographical references in digital documents and visualise them on a map.

Battle of Magnesia 190 BC Roman - Seleucid Syrian War DOCUMENTARY
We decided to slowly remake all of our old documentaries, as current quality of narration and animation is much higher than the one we had before. We want our viewers to know that we will always strive to produce the best quality videos. This documentary is on Roman - Seleucid Syrian War of 192-188 BC (also known as War of Antiochus) and the battles of Thermopylae and Magnesia. Both the Roman Republic and the Seleucid empires were vying for control over Greece and Eastern Mediterranean and their war reshaped the map of the region in the II century BC and was the most significant conflict of its time with a quarter of a million warriors taking part in the hostilities on both sides.
Our remakes will not influence the regular schedule and you will see a new documentary on Sunday!

Syria was an early Roman province, annexed to the Roman Republic in 64 BC by Pompey in the Third Mithridatic War following the defeat of Armenian King Tigranes the Great.Following the partition of the Herodian Kingdom into tetrarchies in 6 AD, it was gradually absorbed into Roman provinces, with Roman Syria annexing Iturea and Trachonitis.Later, in 135 AD, in the aftermath of the Bar Kokhba revolt, Syrian province was merged with Judea province, creating the larger province of Syria Palaestina.

Palmyra before the destruction of ISIL 🇸🇾 Syria
An oasis in the Syrian desert, north-east of Damascus, Palmyra contains the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world. From the 1st to the 2nd century, the art and architecture of Palmyra, standing at the crossroads of several civilizations, married Graeco-Roman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences.
Following the capture of Palmyra in Syria, ISIL was reported as not intending to demolish the city's World Heritage Site (while still intending to destroy any statues deemed 'polytheistic'). On 27 May 2015, ISIL released an 87-second video showing parts of the apparently undamaged ancient colonnades, the Temple of Bel and the Roman theatre. On 27 June 2015, however, ISIL demolished the ancient Lion of Al-lāt sta...

The Romans Theater, Syria
As is familiar to anyone with even a passing interest in ancient history, the Romans wrested control of the Mediterranean from the successors of Alexander. After hard fighting they deposed the kings who succeeded Alexander and replaced them with governors from Rome. The underlying culture, Semitic with a veneer of Greek, did not change under their rule. During the course of the Roman Empires expansion, many regions with their own distinctive characteristics were assimilated There are therefore extensive Roman period remains from many areas outside of the Italian heartland. These were made under Roman jurisdiction, and some embody Roman conceptions of art, but they should not simply be considered as Roman. The Roman designation is therefore an oversimplification, as from the beginning ...

In this history documentary we explore one of the lesser known chapters of Roman history during the reign of Emperor Augustus. The event in question was the forgotten war of the Roman invasion of Arabia. This was brought about after Augustus had consolidated his rule and was looking for new ways to win gold and glory for the people. The campaigns into Germania had become tiresome slogs with little material benefit. As such he turned to the newly minted province of Egypt and its lucrative eastern trade routes. Emperor Augustus ordered the prefect, Aelius Gallus to venture forth into the lands of ancient Arabia. The documentary follows the Roman Army as it prepares for the military campaign and eventually invades.
Stay tuned for more episodes on Rome's Forgotten Wars like our previous episode on the Great Illyrian Revolt. What other unknown wars should we cover next?

Syria was an early Roman province, annexed to the Roman Republic in 64 BC by Pompey in the Third Mithridatic War following the defeat of Armenian King Tigranes the Great.Following the partition of the Herodian Kingdom into tetrarchies in 6 AD, it was gradually absorbed into Roman provinces, with Roman Syria annexing Iturea and Trachonitis.Later, in 135 AD, in the aftermath of the Bar Kokhba revolt, Syrian province was merged with Judea province, creating the larger province of Syria Palaestina.

On 27 June 2015, however, ISIL demolished the ancient Lion of Al-lāt statue in Palmyra. (It has since been restored, and is in storage in a Damascus museum until it can be determined that the statue can be safely returned to Palmyra.) Several other statues from Palmyra reportedly confiscated from a smuggler were also destroyed by ISIL. On 23 August 2015, it was reported that ISIL had blown up the 1st-century Temple of Baalshamin. On 30 August 2015, ISIL demolished the Temple of Bel with explosives. Satellite imagery of the site taken shortly after showed almost nothing remained. (wikipedia)

The Roman designation is therefore an oversimplification, as from the beginning the Roman Empire was a universal one. There were Roman Emperors from many different lineages, and it is not surprising that Syria, with an ancient culture and vast wealth, also contributed leaders to the Empire. Rome also faced some stark challenges for world supremacy from the East. Perhaps the best example is Zenobia.
