Addis Ababa (Amharic: አዲስ አበባ?Addis Abäba, IPA: [adˈdis ˈabəba], “new flower”; Oromo: Finfinne,[fɪnˈfɪ́n.nɛ́] "Natural Spring(s)"), sometimes spelled Addis Abeba (the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority), is the capital city of Ethiopia. Founded in 1886, it is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and numerous other continental and international organizations. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to as "the political capital of Africa" due to its historical, diplomatic and political significance for the continent.

The Tigrayan fighters, who have been fighting federal government forces for a year, also indicated they might advance further south, on the capital, Addis Ababa. The government said soldiers were still battling for control for the two key towns, some 400km ...
In Ethiopia, two rebel groups have joined forces. Fighters from the Tigray People's Liberation Front say they have linked up with rebels from the most populous region, Oromia. This comes as the TPLF has launched a new offensive. They have seized a town on an important highway connecting the capital, Addis Ababa. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has urged all Ethiopians to mobilise in the fight against Tigrayan rebels. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tweeted, saying the United States is alarmed over the TPLF’s takeover of the towns of Dessie and Kombolcha and has urged both sides to stop fighting.
