The earliest surviving copyrighted motion picture, the Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze is a short film made by W. K. L. Dickson in January 1894 for advertising purposes. Often referred to as "Fred Ott's Sneeze," this is is one of the world's earliest motion pictures and America's best known early film production. Record of a Sneeze Fred Ott Edison Kinetoscopic David Shepard Rohauer
The Sneeze filmed in Edison's Black Maria by William K.L. Dickson is one of the earliest films still in existance. Edison assistant Fred Ott takes a pinch of snuff and sneezes. This is the Raymond Rohauer print given out as Christmas presents by David Shepard. Rohauer was notorious for falsely claiming ownership of films and this was Shepard's famous parody of him. This is my transfer of the 16mm film I own and is a fun print of a historically valuable film and look at 16mm film collecting.

Fred Ott's Sneeze
The classic, the original - one of the first films ever made. In 1896, Fred Ott burst onto our screens with Fred Ott's Sneeze. Watch it!
He is also probably the only actor to have an infinite Bacon Number (from 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon'), being the only cast member in his two films).

Fred Ott's Sneeze
The first copyrighted film was a five-second motion picture of a sneeze. The 1894 silent film, directed by William K.L. Dickson, was created by Thomas Edison’s kinetoscope and simply titled Fred Ott’s Sneeze.
Fred Ott was one of Edison’s assistants and had a tendency to launch loud sneezes. As Edison experimented with his new machine, he recruited Ott to perform in front of the lens.
As recalled in a 1908 article, “He protested at first, but was compelled to yield, and by some means or other, known only to himself, was able to go through all the grimaces of a real bona-fide sneeze while the camera clicked away at the rate of fifty pictures to the second.”

Fred Ott's Sneeze through the Ages
A parody of the "Film as an Art Form" educational film we saw too many of in college film classes, this short film contains parodies of 12 landmark filmmakers and film styles. Starting with a formal analysis of Edison's "Fred Ott's Sneeze," narrator Art C. Kraft shows how that important theme recurs across the first 80 years of film's history. Segments include: Griffith, Eisenstein, the German Expressionists, the New Wave, Peckinpah and more.
