SoHo, Manhattan

SoHo, sometimes capitalized Soho, is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, which in recent history came to the public's attention for being the location of many artists' lofts and art galleries, but is now better known for its variety of shops ranging from trendy upscale boutiques to national and international chain store outlets. The area's history is an archetypal example of inner-city regeneration and gentrification, encompassing socio-economic, cultural, political and architectural developments.

The name "SoHo" refers to the area being "South of Houston Street", and was also a reference to Soho, an area in London's West End. It was coined by Chester Rapkin, an urban planner and author of the The South Houston Industrial Area study, also known as the "Rapkin Report". This began a naming convention that became a model for the names of emerging and re-purposed neighborhoods in New York such as TriBeCa for "Triangle Below Canal Street", DUMBO ("Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass"), NoHo ("North of Houston Street"), Nolita ("North of Little Italy") and NoMad ("North of Madison Square"), among others.

Soho (band)

Soho was an English pop trio, consisting of the sisters Jacqueline (Jacqui) Cuff and Pauline Cuff, with Timothy London. Other members of the group over the years have been Dukie D (original programmer and electro-visionary), Liam Gillick (now a well-known artist - Gillick added live bites from vinyl at early gigs), Eds Chesters (now of The Bluetones), Leigh Gorman (ex Bow Wow Wow) and Barry Smith (of Add N To X). Also for a while, Bob and Henry Morris, who previously played with the trio when they were known as Groovalax.

Career

The group is known for their hit song "Hippychick" (composed by Timothy London), which was a Top 15 U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart hit in December of 1990, and a Top 10 hit single in the UK Singles Chart in 1991. The song featured a sample from The Smiths' recording "How Soon Is Now?" sequenced over a Soul II Soul rhythm. London told Mojo magazine that it "was written as a blues before The Smiths' samples and the rhythm were added". "Hippychick" also went to number two for two weeks on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart.

SoHo (Australian TV channel)

SoHo is an Australian cable and satellite channel available on Foxtel, Austar and Optus Television's subscription platforms. Originally a retro channel, it moved into Women's interest programming around the late 1990s. Later on it dropped promoting itself as a women's channel, instead focusing on its drama programming.

After several on-air creative rebrands, and a repositioning to being a full drama channel, dropping much of its talk programming in recent years, W relaunched as SoHo, a brand that launched in New Zealand on August, 2012 as a monthly payment channel. SoHo now specializes in Drama, Thriller and Horror television programming.

History

The channel began life as FX in 1995 and became available on Austar in April 1999. It was relaunched as W. in 2003, shortly before digital broadcasting began. W screened original Australian programming such as Beauty and the Beast, Love My Way, From Here to Maternity and Studio A with Simon Burke. It also had Pay-TV rights to many popular US primetime drama series such as Pushing Dasies and The Wire and repeats of many other series.

Manhattan (/mænˈhætən/, /mənˈhætən/) is one of the five boroughs of New York City, in the state of New York in the United States. The borough is coterminous with New York County, founded on November 1, 1683 as one of the state's original counties.
