ISFAHAN (Iran) is "HALF THE WORLD?!"
Ladies & Gentlemen: I have found my new favorite city in Iran and one of the coolest places on Earth -- ISFAHAN!
Our G Adventures tour continues in this UNESCO World Heritage city that has so much beauty, the locals turned in into a Persian phrase "Isfahān nesf-e- jahān" meaning "Isfahan is half the world."
If you want to see how magical this city is, just head over to Naqsh-e Jahan Square (the 2nd largest city square in the world) right before sunset, have a picnic in the grass, and observe the beautiful 17th Century Mosques and Palaces overlooking thousands of people going about their daily business in Isfahan. Then, try to imagine all the trading and sporting events (i.e. polo) that unfolded here 400+ years ago!

History of Isfahan
Isfahan, the historic city in Iran, is a great example of a city that has experienced the ebb and flow of history. Its story is filled with both peaks and valleys; from being pillaged and destroyed by the Mongols and Timur to being the Safavid capital under Shah Abbas the Great when it was considered to be "half of the world”.

Shah Abbas I, who moved his capital to Isfahan, ordered a colony of Armenian Christians from the town of Julfa (now on Iran’s northern border), to move to the village ‘New Julfa’ in Isfahan.
Shah Abbas ensured that Armenian religious freedom was respected. Now, Jolfa district Isfahan holds a prosperous community. Isfahan is an incredible city rich with art, history, architecture and beauty. The fact that it’s not a commonly traveled tourist destination is logical to me. However, it really saddens me that many people will never see what this city has to offer. To make matters worse, there aren’t enough unique videos or pictures coming out to at least give a glimpse into this ancient modernized city.
My trip was roughly 3 weeks long. In between seeing family and friends I tried to squeeze in time to take as many photos as I possibly could to hopefully create something that most of you have never seen. There were some of the places I had to get special access to which took a bit of time. Some of the spots were off limits so a bit of bribing came into play. I wanted to make something that would even give the people of Esfahan a different look into their own city. Given I’m not a professional and the time I had to play with, it’s nowhere near perfect. There are countless places I did not get a chance to capture and made a lot of errors along the way.
Regardless, I’m still very proud with the end result and hope to have inspired some of you to travel there some day. Everything you are about to see is either a hyperlapse or a timelapse meaning they’re all pictures turned into film!
Here are some of the project stats:
1 DSLR [ Nikon D5200 ]
2 lenses [ 18-55 mm f3.5-5.5g & 35mm f1.8g ]
+5,000 images
Roughly 120 gigabytes of footage
+100 hours of capturing, editing and processing
Went through 8 hours of music to find the right one.

Compared to Tehran, our last stop, Isfahan is more traditional and conservative. This is why you can visit quite a few monumental sights here. We took 2 days to try the local cuisine and explore the best things to do in Isfahan such as roaming the world's second largest square, smoke shisha or visit the big mosques.
Due to it's centralized structure and the numerous parks Isfahan is a great city to explore for tourists - all major attractions can be found in and around the huge Naqsh-e Jahan Square.
We reached out to the local Couchsurfing community to get in touch with locales who could give us tips beyond the typical tourist sites - it didn't take long until Shayan reached out and offered us to show us his Esfahan. This way we got to see places and eat at restaurants we normally wouldn't have found ourselves. In this video We give a few recommendations of places to visit in Isfahan and typical persian dishes you should try when visiting.
This part of the trip was executed within 3 days - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do in Isfahan:
- Naqsh-e Jahan Square
- Masjed-e Shah / Shah Mosque
- Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque
- Ali Qapu Palace
- The Imperial Bazaar of Isfahan
- Abbasi Hotel
- Samboose & Faloodeh
- Promenade & Parks
- Shahrzad Restaurant
- Saba Hotel
- Chehel Sotoun Palace
- Esfahan Old Town & Streets
- Si-o-seh Pol
This video is part of „Inside Iran“ - a documentary series introducing you to popular and unknown sights / things to do in Iran as well as the Persian cuisine and the super friendly locals we met on our trip from Tehran to Isfahan, Shiraz and Yazd. With this series I want to create a better understanding of the country and it’s people without focussing on politics or religion.

After school I worked at a bank and started a company, as this was what I thought I was supposed to do. I did not like my life at all and after a long decision making process I decided to take a jump in the deep. I sold my house and stored my stuff and found a job opportunity in South Africa. A world I never could have imagined opened up for me, traveling and working at the same time. Before heading back to my home country, The Netherlands, I started an "acting for theatre and film" evening course, with the intention to learn to become a better presenter in business. As I was still pursuing what I thought I was supposed to do, business. To my surprise I really enjoyed the acting training and decided to change my idea of what I was supposed to do and what not and continued an acting school in NYC. When finished studying, my application for a US work visa was denied because I didn't already have proof of many jobs done in the industry (of course not! I was just starting out). A friend of mine was into sailing and through him I found out that people sailed around the world and made money by making YouTube videos. I knew nothing about sailing, but #travel around the world was always my dream and sailing on other peoples boats seemed a cheap and adventurous way to achieve that. I fell in love with making a #travelvlog and have never stopped doing it since. I lived a year on sailing boats sailing around the world but after crossing the pacific I felt it was time to do something else. I cycled New Zealand from top to bottom, drove a $200 motorbike through South-East Asia, sold it for $300 and drove a van from Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan which I then shipped to Argentina to drive to
Alaska doing the #vanlife. I'm incredibly grateful that I am able to do something I love every day and thankful for everyone who joins me on this journey.

Armenians are permitted to hold their own religious ceremonies and activities. The symbiont circle between Muslims and Christians has been standing for more than four hundred years.
Jolfa square is located on the southern side of Zayande-e rood river. It is connected to the other side of the river by Marnan Bridge. Actually, one of Armenian’s architects renovated this bridge.
The Armenian built 25 churches, of which 13 survived. Among all the jolfa churches, Bethlehem (1628) and Vank (1655) are open to visitors.
One of the main attraction in Jolfa is the Vank Cathedral. The Jolfa Vank Cathedral is a masterpiece of architecture. Construction of this cathedral started at the time of Shah Abbas the second. Vank Cathedral is known for holding unique collections of beautiful frescos. They depict stories from the holy bible and Tora. They were painted by Armenian artists during safavid era which you can see as soon as you move into the passage and enter the prayer hall read more.
In Bethlehem church, the prayer hall is decorated with paintings depicting stories from old and new Testaments. There is also a high double layer dome with floral gilded patterns.
Nowadays, 5 of Armenian merchants’ houses, from the Safavid-era, have been converted into Art University of Isfahan.
New Julfa Isfahan has not only a laidback atmosphere, but also a unique setting which is full of life and youthful vibes. Take your time exploring it on foot, but don’t forget to sit back and relax. Plus, there are lots of caffes for an evening tea and dinning places for a night out.
