New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.

Mary Pattillo, Professor of Sociology and African-American Studies at Northwestern University, discusses the on-the-ground limits and challenges of "mixed-income" housing policies as they relate to the topics of race, class, politics, planning, governance, and social interaction by presenting research on various mixed-income developments in Chicago. While noting the success stories and benefits, Pattillo highlights the risks of gentrification, displacement, and the "tyranny of the middle class" in such developments, and the role of public housing authorities in the business of building market-rate housing. Part of the Tuesday Speaker Series presented by HUD's Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.

Video by Harrison Woodhead www.harrisonwoodhead.com Sound Mixed by Anthony Badolato Communities for Communities is about fostering relationships and bringing communities together. With the support of the people of Canada Bay, we have hosted numerous community events and fundraised more than AU$2 million since 2002. These funds have built houses, schools, and community facilities in disadvantaged villages overseas in Thailand, Philippines, South Vietnam and Indonesia. Additionally, the proceeds have funded paediatric physiotherapy hours, a playground and now a hydrotherapy facility at Lucas Gardens School in Five Dock. http://comms4comms.ewo.com.au/
The war on poverty has been lost, at least in its mission to increase self-sufficiency, primarily because the built environment was not designed for self-employment. From the earliest mill towns to today’s metropolis, cities are designed for wage employment with distinct employment and residential zones. Makerhoods.org was founded to reduce this barrier by constructing urban work/live and mixed use developments specifically designed for low to moderate income entrepreneurs. Coupled with a business development support system, a Makerhood community is structured to offer meaningful self-employment for an urban population with few alternate opportunities for work. LSE London and Berkeley Homes have been working in collaboration to produce a report on creating new communities in London. This film looks at the report's main findings. We identified six characteristics of a new London village: 1) It’s small and intimate and can be comfortably covered on foot, 2) It’s unique, and has an identifiable centre with its own atmosphere and sense of place, 3) It’s designed for social interaction with plenty of public and green space, and places for community events, 4) It’s locally driven and locally responsive, and residents are involved in decisions, 5) It’s functional; well served by public transport and with good access to core services like a doctor’s surgery, food shops and schools, and 6) It’s mixed – the community has a mix of ages, backgrounds and tenu...

Kent presents a new model for designing a flexible, liveable and sustainable solution for high density housing in our expanding cities. With our growing urban populations, the challenge of housing should be treated as an opportunity to rethink and reshape the way we live in the 21st century. The end users will be at the core of these emerging communities, which are tailored to the needs of a diverse demographic, increasingly becoming amalgamated within our multi-layered societies. Kent Jackson is design director and principal of SOM‘s London office. His experience encompasses a diverse range of project scales and uses, including residential developments, corporate offices, transport, and large mixed-use urban schemes. Over the last 25 years, an increasing number of cities have moved away from building affordable housing that concentrates families and children in neighborhoods of poverty. This session explores the evidence to date of how building affordable housing within a mixed-income setting can be more beneficial for people of all income levels, especially low income families and children. Moderator: David Edwards, CEO, Purpose Built Communities Panelists: Salin Geevarghese, Founding Director, Mixed-Income Innovation and Action Network; Senior Advisor, Center for the Study of Social Policy Rich Sciortino, Principal, Brinshore This conversation took place at the Purpose Built Communities Annual Conference, October 3, 2017 in Omaha, NE.

Public housing in the United States is administered by federal, state and local agencies to provide subsidized assistance for low-income households. Public housing is priced well below the market rate, allowing people to live in more convenient locations rather than move away from the city in search of lower rents. Now increasingly provided in a variety of settings and formats, originally public housing in the U.S. consisted primarily of one or more concentrated blocks of low-rise and/or high-rise apartment buildings. These complexes are operated by state and local housing authorities which are authorized and funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. More than 1.2 million households currently live in public housing of some type. Subsidized apartment building...
Impacts of Industrial Disturbance on Soil Microbial and Plant Communities in Mixed Grass Prairies of Alberta Thompson, K.A., James, K., Najafi, F., Carlyle, C.N., Quideau, S., and E.W. Bork. Grasslands provide significant ecosystem goods and services, such as carbon sequestration, the mitigation of greenhouse gases, and the provision of diverse habitats for animals, microorganisms, and pollinators. Disturbances to grasslands may decrease their ability to provide and maintain these goods and services. Significant areas of the mixed grass prairies (MGP) in Alberta have experienced industrial disturbance from high voltage powerline installation; heavy industrial equipment traffic during construction on prairie soils may directly impact vegetation, increase soil compaction and cause surface ru...

A savanna or savannah is a mixed woodland grassland ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. The open canopy allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support an unbroken herbaceous layer consisting primarily of grasses.[1][2][3] Savannas maintain an open canopy despite a high tree density.[4] It is often believed that savannas feature widely spaced, scattered trees. However, in many savannas, tree densities are higher and trees are more regularly spaced than in forests.[5][6][7][8] The South American savanna types cerrado sensu stricto and cerrado dense typically have densities of trees similar to or higher than that found in South American tropical forests,[5][7][8] with savanna rangingt 800–3300 trees per hectare (tree...

Energy and Co-Designing Communities: Designing a Deployable Research Device - Professor Bill Gaver, Goldsmiths University of London The 'Energy and Co - Designing Communities' project is investigating how an 'Energy Babble' device can draw together and reconfigure a number of existing UK energy communities and practitioner groups around ways of talking about environmental issues and practices. The Babble presents a variety of voices (literally and figuratively) speaking about energy demand reduction and related issues, drawn from Twitter, other online information sources as well as messages from the local communities themselves. These are mixed and presented to highlight their diversity and potential agreements and disagreements, with the intention of adding to and unsettling the communit...
Using group dynamics as an umbrella term for overlapping literatures on community, cooperative, and collaborative practices, I introduce the concept of PCOIz which might help teachers to better conceptualize their classes and the time-frame influences on their students. I position PCOIz as complementary to but different from communities of practice and imagined communities, and in some ways overlapping, with an emphasis on imagining and re-imagining. Using the Wicked Eyebrows figure below, we look at how teachers can systematically organize activities to look at students’ pasts, presents, and futures. I also present several mixed method studies done in Japan which indicate that PCOIz, when well developed, can nurture the aspirations, resilience, learning strategies, beliefs, motivations, a...

Anglican religious orders are communities of men or women (or in some cases mixed communities of both sexes) in the Anglican Communion who live under a common rule of life. The members of religious orders take vows which often include the traditional monastic vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, or the ancient vow of stability, or sometimes a modern interpretation of some or all of these vows. Members may be laity or clergy, but most commonly include a mixture of both. They lead a common life of work and prayer, sometimes on a single site, sometimes spread over multiple locations. Titles Members of religious communities may be known as monks or nuns, particularly in those communities which require their members to live permanently in one location; they may be known as friars or siste...
