Alexander von Humboldt hat unser Verständnis der Natur im Ganzen revolutioniert. Er entdeckte Klima- und Vegetationszonen, klassifizierte tausende von Tieren und Pflanzen und machte die Naturwissenschaften populär. Er hat sich für alles interessiert und wollte sein Wissen an möglichst viele Menschen weitergeben. Eine bedeutendsten Reisen unternahm er nach Südamerika. In seinem Gepäck befanden sich 42 wissenschaftliche Instrumente, mit denen er unteranderen Koordinaten, Längen- und Breitengrade oder die atmosphärische Elektrizität messen konnte. Humboldt schrieb in seinem Leben 50 Bücher und 700 Artikel, in denen er der Menschheit all sein Wissen zur Verfügung stellen wollte. Ist er also der erste Wikipedianer?

Alexander von Humboldt was one of the last big explorers and polymath. Living in the time of the Industrial Revolution, Humboldt adapted the idea of romanticism, believing, that gathering knowledge on science will never be exhausted. He published his studies of the animal- and plant-kingdom and unique understanding of nature public in the book Cosmos, a corpus of his most important findings.

Alexander von Humboldt war einer der letzten großen Entdecker und Universalgelehrten in der Zeit der Industriellen Revolution. Humboldt war, frei nach dem Prinzip der Romantik, davon überzeugt, dass Wissen und die Wissenschaft nie ausgeschöpft werden können. Er studierte sein Leben lang mit Akribie die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt und verschaffte der Menschheit in seinem Werk Kosmos ein besseres Verständnis der Zusammenhänge in der Natur. On Wednesday, September 16, 2020, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) presented a lively lecture with Eleanor Jones Harvey, senior curator at SAAM and curator of the landmark exhibition “Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture.” This is the first lecture in a six-part series that examines the profound impact of Alexander von Humboldt, a renowned Prussian naturalist, and explorer and one of the most influential figures of the nineteenth century. Learn how Humboldt’s ideas shaped American perceptions of nature and the way American cultural identity became grounded in our relationship with the environment in this thought-provoking lecture.
The exhibition "Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture" places American art squarely in the center of a conversation about the lasting influence of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) with artworks that reveal how the American wilderness became emblematic of the country’s distinctive character. The exhibition includes the original “Peale Mastodon” skeleton, on loan from the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, as well as two paintings by Charles Willson Peale featuring the fossil—"Exhumation of the Mastodon" (1806–08) and "The Artist in His Museum" (1822). Featuring this important fossil, that has been in Europe since 1847, emphasizes how natural history and natural monuments bond Humboldt with the United States. The skeleton, excavated in 1801 in upstate New York, was the most complete to be unearthed at that time. Its discovery became a symbol of civic pride. In 1804, Humboldt was honored with a dinner beneath the mastodon exhibited in the Peale Museum in Philadelphia.

Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (
listen ; 14 September 1769 – 6 May 1859) was a Prussian geographer, naturalist, explorer, and influential proponent of romantic philosophy. He was the younger brother of the Prussian minister, philosopher, and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767–1835). Humboldt's quantitative work on botanical geography laid the foundation for the field of biogeography. Humboldt's advocacy of long-term systematic geophysical measurement laid the foundation for modern geomagnetic and meteorological monitoring.
Between 1799 and 1804, Humboldt travelled extensively in Latin America, exploring and describing it for the first time from a modern scientific point of view. His description of the journey was written up and published in an enormous set of volumes over 21 years. Humboldt was one of the first people to propose that the lands bordering the Atlantic Ocean were once joined (South America and Africa in particular). Humboldt resurrected the use of the word cosmos from the ancient Greek and assigned it to his multi-volume treatise, Kosmos, in which he sought to unify diverse branches of scientific knowledge and culture. This important work also motivated a holistic perception of the universe as one interacting entity.

Alexander von Humboldt (ship)
Alexander von Humboldt is a German sailing ship originally built in 1906 by the German shipyard AG Weser at Bremen as the lightship Reserve Sonderburg. She was operated throughout the North and Baltic Seas until being retired in 1986. Subsequently she was converted into a three masted barque by the German shipyard Motorwerke Bremerhaven and was re-launched in 1988 as Alexander von Humboldt.
History
Planned and ordered in 1906 as a reserve lightvessel (to stand in for other lightvessels during scheduled yard maintenance), the ship was launched on 10 September 1906 at AG Weser with the yard number 155 as the first of its class. Its hull was that of a sailing ship, as was common in this class, with the beacon mast in place of the main mast. There is no clear record whether she was christened Reserve Fehmarnbelt (after her first station) or Reserve Sonderburg, as both names are documented. On the ship's bell appears only Reserve; a first home port at Sonderburg (today Sønderborg, Denmark) is most likely. From 1920 to 1945 the ship was home ported at Kiel-Holtenau and served in many locations, but mainly along Baltic shores.

Er hat sich für alles interessiert und wollte sein Wissen an möglichst viele Menschen weitergeben. Eine bedeutendsten Reisen unternahm er nach Südamerika. In seinem Gepäck befanden sich 42 wissenschaftliche Instrumente, mit denen er unteranderen Koordinaten, Längen- und Breitengrade oder die atmosphärische Elektrizität messen konnte. Humboldt schrieb in seinem Leben 50 Bücher und 700 Artikel, in denen er der Menschheit all sein Wissen zur Verfügung stellen wollte. Ist er also der erste Wikipedianer?

On Wednesday, September 16, 2020, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) presented a lively lecture with Eleanor Jones Harvey, senior curator at SAAM and curator of the landmark exhibition “Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture.” This is the first lecture in a six-part series that examines the profound impact of Alexander von Humboldt, a renowned Prussian naturalist, and explorer and one of the most influential figures of the nineteenth century. Learn how Humboldt’s ideas shaped American perceptions of nature and the way American cultural identity became grounded in our relationship with the environment in this thought-provoking lecture.
The exhibition "Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture" places American art squarely in the center of a conversation about the lasting influence of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) with artworks that reveal how the American wilderness became emblematic of the country’s distinctive character. The exhibition includes the original “Peale Mastodon” skeleton, on loan from the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, as well as two paintings by Charles Willson Peale featuring the fossil—"Exhumation of the Mastodon" (1806–08) and "The Artist in His Museum" (1822). Featuring this important fossil, that has been in Europe since 1847, emphasizes how natural history and natural monuments bond Humboldt with the United States. The skeleton, excavated in 1801 in upstate New York, was the most complete to be unearthed at that time. Its discovery became a symbol of civic pride. In 1804, Humboldt was honored with a dinner beneath the mastodon exhibited in the Peale Museum in Philadelphia.

Zwölf Monate lang stand der Forscher, Entdecker, Vordenker und Kosmopolit Alexander von Humboldt im Zentrum der medialen Aufmerksamkeit. Anlässlich des Humboldt-Jahres wurden 2019 in über 100 Veranstaltungen allein in Berlin und Brandenburg sowie zahlreichen Ausstellungen, Installationen und Performances weltweit das bewegte Leben, das umfassende Werk und die Aktualität Alexander von Humboldts diskutiert und gewürdigt. In unserer Video-Dokumentation lassen wir die zahlreichen internationalen Künstler*innen, Kurator*innen und Expert*innen noch einmal zu Wort kommen, die die zentralen Feierlichkeiten rund um den 250. Geburtstag Humboldts am 13. und 14. September 2019 im Humboldt Forum gestaltet haben.

Alexander von Humboldt hat unser Verständnis der Natur im Ganzen revolutioniert. Er entdeckte Klima- und Vegetationszonen, klassifizierte tausende von Tieren und Pflanzen und machte die Naturwissenschaften populär. Er hat sich für alles interessiert und wollte sein Wissen an möglichst viele Menschen weitergeben. Eine bedeutendsten Reisen unternahm er nach Südamerika. In seinem Gepäck befanden sich 42 wissenschaftliche Instrumente, mit denen er unteranderen Koordinaten, Längen- und Breitengrade oder die atmosphärische Elektrizität messen konnte. Humboldt schrieb in seinem Leben 50 Bücher und 700 Artikel, in denen er der Menschheit all sein Wissen zur Verfügung stellen wollte. Ist er also der erste Wikipedianer?

Living in the time of the Industrial Revolution, Humboldt adapted the idea of romanticism, believing, that gathering knowledge on science will never be exhausted. He published his studies of the animal- and plant-kingdom and unique understanding of nature public in the book Cosmos, a corpus of his most important findings.

On Wednesday, September 16, 2020, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) presented a lively lecture with Eleanor Jones Harvey, senior curator at SAAM and curator of the landmark exhibition “Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture.” This is the first lecture in a six-part series that examines the profound impact of Alexander von Humboldt, a renowned Prussian naturalist, and explorer and one of the most influential figures of the nineteenth century. Learn how Humboldt’s ideas shaped American perceptions of nature and the way American cultural identity became grounded in our relationship with the environment in this thought-provoking lecture.
The exhibition "Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture" places American art squarely in the center of a conversation about the lasting influence of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) with artworks that reveal how the American wilderness became emblematic of the country’s distinctive character. The exhibition includes the original “Peale Mastodon” skeleton, on loan from the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, as well as two paintings by Charles Willson Peale featuring the fossil—"Exhumation of the Mastodon" (1806–08) and "The Artist in His Museum" (1822). Featuring this important fossil, that has been in Europe since 1847, emphasizes how natural history and natural monuments bond Humboldt with the United States. The skeleton, excavated in 1801 in upstate New York, was the most complete to be unearthed at that time. Its discovery became a symbol of civic pride. In 1804, Humboldt was honored with a dinner beneath the mastodon exhibited in the Peale Museum in Philadelphia.

Zwölf Monate lang stand der Forscher, Entdecker, Vordenker und Kosmopolit Alexander von Humboldt im Zentrum der medialen Aufmerksamkeit. Anlässlich des Humboldt-Jahres wurden 2019 in über 100 Veranstaltungen allein in Berlin und Brandenburg sowie zahlreichen Ausstellungen, Installationen und Performances weltweit das bewegte Leben, das umfassende Werk und die Aktualität Alexander von Humboldts diskutiert und gewürdigt. In unserer Video-Dokumentation lassen wir die zahlreichen internationalen Künstler*innen, Kurator*innen und Expert*innen noch einmal zu Wort kommen, die die zentralen Feierlichkeiten rund um den 250. Geburtstag Humboldts am 13. und 14. September 2019 im Humboldt Forum gestaltet haben.

Alexander von Humboldt
Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt ( listen ; 14 September 1769 – 6 May 1859) was a Prussian geographer, naturalist, explorer, and influential proponent of romantic philosophy. He was the younger brother of the Prussian minister, philosopher, and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767–1835). Humboldt's quantitative work on botanical geography laid the foundation for the field of biogeography. Humboldt's advocacy of long-term systematic geophysical measurement laid the foundation for modern geomagnetic and meteorological monitoring.
Between 1799 and 1804, Humboldt travelled extensively in Latin America, exploring and describing it for the first time from a modern scientific point of view. His description of the journey was written up and published in an enormous set of volumes over 21 years. Humboldt was one of the first people to propose that the lands bordering the Atlantic Ocean were once joined (South America and Africa in particular). Humboldt resurrected the use of the word cosmos from the ancient Greek and assigned it to his multi-volume treatise, Kosmos, in which he sought to unify diverse branches of scientific knowledge and culture. This important work also motivated a holistic perception of the universe as one interacting entity.
