Dae ye talk Scots? In Scotland, locals speak English, but they have their own dialect, which means a set of different words that aren't used in England. At first, the accent might also be difficult to understand. There might be a lot of vocabulary that you have never heard before. In this lesson, I’m going to teach you common Scottish vocabulary and fun phrases in my best Scottish accent! Depending on who you ask, "Scots" is either a dialect of English, or it’s vocabulary that is considered a local slang. However, if you are visiting Scotland, the difference in language is close enough that native English speakers can understand most of it easily. The Scots language spoken in Scotland varies depending on the region. Therefore, in this lesson, I will include the most well known Scottish vocabulary as well as some examples of Doric phrases (North East Scots). Be sure to make fun of my attempts at the Scottish accent!

A recently released email from the Westminster government that introduced Scottish devolution reveals that the opinion of the Scottish Secretary at the time, Donald Dewer, was that Holyrood would have the authority to issue a refrendum on anything it likes. That doesn't necessarily mean that the referendum could trigger any outcome, but it adds an interesting dimension to the Scottish independence debate.

Heraldry in Scotland, while broadly similar to that practised in England and elsewhere in western Europe, has its own distinctive features. Its heraldic executive is separate from that of the rest of the United Kingdom.
Executive
The Scottish heraldic executive is separate from that of the remainder of the United Kingdom and is vested in the Lord Lyon King of Arms. The earliest reference to the Lyon, as such, dates to the reign of Robert the Bruce in 1318, although with respect to certain of his functions he is considered the successor of royal officials dating to ancient Celtic times. The Lord Lyon exercises general jurisdiction over all matters armorial in Scotland and serves as a Judge of the Realm. He also decides on questions relating to family representation, pedigrees and genealogies. In addition, he supervises all state, royal and public ceremonies in Scotland. The Lord Lyon also asserts the right to decide who is Head of the Clan or Chief of the Family or Name, although his authority to determine chiefships has been challenged.

Scottish people
The Scottish people (Scots: Scots Fowk, Scottish Gaelic: Albannaich), or Scots, are a nation and socially defined ethnic group resident in Scotland. Historically, they emerged from an amalgamation of two groups—the Picts and Gaels—who founded the Kingdom of Scotland (or Alba) in the 9th century, and thought to have been ethnolinguistically Celts. Later, the neighbouring Cumbrian Britons, who also spoke a Celtic language, as well as Germanic-speaking Anglo-Saxons and Norse, were incorporated into the Scottish nation.
In modern use, "Scottish people" or "Scots" is used to refer to anyone whose linguistic, cultural, family ancestral or genetic origins are from within Scotland. The Latin word Scotti originally referred to the Gaels but came to describe all inhabitants of Scotland. Though sometimes considered archaic or pejorative, the term Scotch has also been used for the Scottish people, though this usage is current primarily outside Scotland.
There are people of Scottish descent in many countries other than Scotland. Emigration, influenced by factors such as the Highland and Lowland Clearances, Scottish participation in the British Empire, and latterly industrial decline and unemployment, resulted in Scottish people being found throughout the world. Large populations of Scottish people settled the new-world lands of North and South America, Australia and New Zealand. There is a Scottish presence at a particularly high level in Canada, which has the highest level per-capita of Scots descendants in the world and second largest population of descended Scots ancestry after the United States. They took with them their Scottish languages and culture.

At first, the accent might also be difficult to understand. There might be a lot of vocabulary that you have never heard before. In this lesson, I’m going to teach you common Scottish vocabulary and fun phrases in my best Scottish accent! Depending on who you ask, "Scots" is either a dialect of English, or it’s vocabulary that is considered a local slang. However, if you are visiting Scotland, the difference in language is close enough that native English speakers can understand most of it easily. The Scots language spoken in Scotland varies depending on the region. Therefore, in this lesson, I will include the most well known Scottish vocabulary as well as some examples of Doric phrases (North East Scots). Be sure to make fun of my attempts at the Scottish accent!

Dae ye talk Scots? In Scotland, locals speak English, but they have their own dialect, which means a set of different words that aren't used in England. At first, the accent might also be difficult to understand. There might be a lot of vocabulary that you have never heard before. In this lesson, I’m going to teach you common Scottish vocabulary and fun phrases in my best Scottish accent! Depending on who you ask, "Scots" is either a dialect of English, or it’s vocabulary that is considered a local slang. However, if you are visiting Scotland, the difference in language is close enough that native English speakers can understand most of it easily. The Scots language spoken in Scotland varies depending on the region. Therefore, in this lesson, I will include the most well known Scottish vocabulary as well as some examples of Doric phrases (North East Scots). Be sure to make fun of my attempts at the Scottish accent!

A recently released email from the Westminster government that introduced Scottish devolution reveals that the opinion of the Scottish Secretary at the time, Donald Dewer, was that Holyrood would have the authority to issue a refrendum on anything it likes. That doesn't necessarily mean that the referendum could trigger any outcome, but it adds an interesting dimension to the Scottish independence debate.

Scottish heraldry
Heraldry in Scotland, while broadly similar to that practised in England and elsewhere in western Europe, has its own distinctive features. Its heraldic executive is separate from that of the rest of the United Kingdom.
Executive
The Scottish heraldic executive is separate from that of the remainder of the United Kingdom and is vested in the Lord Lyon King of Arms. The earliest reference to the Lyon, as such, dates to the reign of Robert the Bruce in 1318, although with respect to certain of his functions he is considered the successor of royal officials dating to ancient Celtic times. The Lord Lyon exercises general jurisdiction over all matters armorial in Scotland and serves as a Judge of the Realm. He also decides on questions relating to family representation, pedigrees and genealogies. In addition, he supervises all state, royal and public ceremonies in Scotland. The Lord Lyon also asserts the right to decide who is Head of the Clan or Chief of the Family or Name, although his authority to determine chiefships has been challenged.
