Philip Glass. - Koyaanisqatsi (original version)

"Metamorphosis", refers to and was inspired by the 1915 short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. While all pieces were written in 1988, some were written for a staging of Metamorphosis, while others were for a documentary film called The Thin Blue Line directed by Errol Morris.
"Metamorphosis One" is played in an episode of Battlestar Galactica by Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. Within the narrative, her father composed and performed the piece. It is also played in the series finale of Person of Interest, Return 0. "Metamorphosis Two" formed the basis of one of the main musical themes in the film The Hours. It is also the song that the American rock band Pearl Jam uses as their introduction music to concerts.
*I prepared this release to celebrate 4 million streams of this composition in my interpretation on Youtube (a bit late though, because the number of views has grown since then). After several unlucky attempts to make this recording on different instruments and in different studios I returned to the same living room and the same piano - Steinway & Sons model O made in 1926. I can not possibly explain this, but despite all the obvious technical obstacles that stand before you while recording in a regular room, with all the uncontrolled reflections, with the old piano in poor condition which makes you suffer a lot, with all the additional vibrations, rattling strings, hammers that require voicing, with a creaking chair - it turns out to be exactly how I perceive this music. So, one piano, 2 microphones, beloved Philip Glass, and my personal story with the place where this record session took place.

New version of The Hours by Philip Glass arranged for piano solo by Michael Riesman and Nico Muhly (with some edits made by me) and recorded in a small wooden church in a remote Dutch village using a 70-something years old C. Bechstein Model C grand piano, which most definitely contributed to achieving a unique sound and atmosphere:

Accepted onto the early admissions programme of the University of Chicago, Philip Glass graduated aged just nineteen with a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy, practising the piano in his spare time. Subsequently studying at the Juilliard School, Glass’s name has since become synonymous with the minimalist style. His film compositions have earned him a Golden Globe as well as three Academy Award nominations.
This selection of pieces showcases Glass’s music for solo piano, with each of the works baring the hallmarks of minimalism. Among the pieces featured in the collection is Metamorphosis, a set of five variations that evolve over the course of the entire work to create a stirring final movement. Also present are extracts from the soundtrack of Stephen Daldry’s film The Hours, as well as ‘Truman Sleeps’ from The Truman Show (which earned Glass a Golden Globe award for ‘Best Original Score’). The collection ends with the ‘Trilogy’ Sonata, containing piano transcriptions of Glass’s three ‘portrait’ operas: Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha and Akhnaten.
Dutch pianist and composer Jeroen Van Veen studied at the Utrecht Conservatory and has played with many orchestras throughout Europe and the USA, under renowned conductors such as Howard Williams, Peter Eötvös and Robert Craft. An accomplished recitalist, van Veen has also appeared at festivals including the Reder Piano Festival and the Festival der Kunsten (Bad Gleichenberg). His compositional style is closely related to minimalism, and contains elements of jazz, blues and pop music.
Other information:
- Recorded 23–28 October 2006, Barbara Church, Culemborg, The Netherlands.
- A new compilation of the music for piano solo by Philip Glass, icon of minimalism. In his piano music, Glass presents structures of repeated patterns which slowly and gradually, seemingly unconsciously, change in rhythm, speed or form, creating a fascinating sound landscape of slowly shifting colours and patterns.
- Dutch pianist Jeroen van Veen is a champion of the minimalist piano school. His earlier set of minimalist piano works (BC 9171) has won rave reviews in the international press: “The leading exponent of minimalism (Fanfare)”, “10/10” performance/recording, Classicstoday.

- "Qatsi - vida / Koyaanis -- louco / Fragmentação -- Desordem , Desiquilibrio

The discovery of the temple of Amenhotep III
A movie directed by Antoine Chéné.
In Luxor, the colossi of Memnon, on the left bank of the river Nile, in EGYPT, marked the entrance to the biggest temple ever built by a Pharaoh, the temple of Amenhotep III. Since early 2000, an international team led by Hourig Sourouzian, an egyptologist specializing in the sculpture of the Pharaohs, is bringing back to life this temple, whose remains, with the exception of the two Memnon colossi, have all disappeared. Thus, the team have unearthed another six colossi, each measuring more than 10 meters high, as well as more than 150 statues of Sehkmets, the goddesses bearing a lion’s head on a female body, each of them about two meters high. In addition, many sphinxes, royal statues and others relics have been found.
Filmed since 2004, we follow all ...

Saving The Temple of Amenhotep III at Thebes (ft Dr. Hourig Sourouzian)
( http://heritage-key.com/blogs/malcolmj/archaeovideo-saving-pharaoh-amenhotep-iiis-funerary-temple-thebes ) Dr Hourig Sourouzian explains the excavations and work being carried out at the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III, a mortuary monument ten times bigger than any other in Egypt. However, the temple's close proximity to the River Nile left it exposed to flooding, and the temple collapsed within 200 years of being constructed. Dr Sourouzian explains her goal is to restore every object found at the temple to its original position, and create detailed maps and models of how the building might once have looked.

Amenhotep III, king of Egypt 1390-1352 BC
A 49-minute unscripted talk about Amenhotep III, one of the later pharaohs of Egypt's 18th Dynasty. This is just a reflection of work in progress on a book I am writing about the 18th Dynasty, called The Climax of Egypt. How Ambition, Greed and Despotism drove the Rise and Fall of Tutankhamun's Egypt, to be published in late 2022 by Little, Brown. Nothing definitive - just my thoughts about whether he was the real deal or something of a puppet.
NAMES (all dates only approximate)
1. Amenhotep III (1390-1352 BC)
2. His queen, Tiye, the daughter of Yuya and Thuya
Amenhotep and Tiye were the parents of:
3. Akhenaten (1352-1336 BC) who was married to his queen:
4. Nefertiti, also known as Neferneferuaten who seems to have become a joint king with her husband later in the reign with the throne ...

Akhnaten - Funeral of Amenhotep III
The scene presents the funeral of Akhnaten's father, Amenhotep III. As the starting point of the opera, it represents the historical moment immediately before the "Amarna period" or the reign of Akhnaten and depicts the society in which the reforms of Akhnaten (reforms which appeared so extreme that they can be called revolutionary) took place. The action of the scene centers on the funeral rites of the New Empire of the 18th Dynasty. It is dominated by the Amon priests and appears as ritual of extraordinary traditional character drawn from The Egyptian Book of the Dead.
The funeral cortege enters followed by a small body of Amon priests who in turn are led by Aye (father of Nefertiti, advisor to the recently dead pharaoh, and the Pharaoh to be).

Amenhotep III (sometimes read as Amenophis III; meaning Amun is Satisfied) was the ninth pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty. According to different authors, he ruled Egypt from June 1386 to 1349 BC or June 1388 BC to December 1351 BC/1350 BC[4] after his father Thutmose IV died. Amenhotep III was the son of Thutmose by Mutemwia, a minor wife of Amenhotep's father.[5]
His lengthy reign was a period of unprecedented prosperity and artistic splendour, when Egypt reached the peak of her artistic and international power. A 2008 list compiled by Forbes magazine found Amenhotep III to be the twelfth richest person in human history.[6] When he died (probably in the 39th year of his reign), his son reigned as Amenhotep IV, later changing his royal name to Akhenaten.
He built extensively at the temple of Karnak including the Luxor temple which consisted of two pylons, a colonnade behind the new temple entrance, and a new temple to the goddess Ma'at. Amenhotep III dismantled the fourth pylon of the Temple of Amun at Karnak to construct a new pylon—the third pylon—and created a new entrance to this structure where he erected "two rows of columns with open papyrus capital[s]" down the centre of this newly formed forecourt.[47] The forecourt between the third and fourth pylons of Egypt, sometimes called an obelisk court, was also decorated with scenes of the sacred barque of the deities Amun, Mut, and Khonsu being carried in funerary boats.[48] The king also started work on the Tenth pylon at the Temple of Amun there. Amenhotep III's first recorded act as king—in his Years 1 and 2—was to open new limestone quarries at Tura, just south of Cairo and at Dayr al-Barsha in Middle Egypt in order to herald his great building projects.[49] He oversaw construction of another temple to Ma'at at Luxor and virtually covered Nubia with numerous monuments.
"...including a small temple with a colonnade (dedicated to Thutmose III) at Elephantine, a rock temple dedicated to Amun 'Lord of the Ways' at Wadi es-Sebuam, and the temple of Horus of Miam at Aniba...[as well as founding] additional temples at Kawa and Sesebi."[50]
His enormous mortuary temple on the west bank of the Nile was, in its day, the largest religious complex in Thebes, but unfortunately, the king chose to build it too close to the floodplain and less than two hundred years later, it stood in ruins. Much of the masonry was purloined by Merneptah and later pharaohs for their own construction projects.[51] The Colossi of Memnon—two massive stone statues, eighteen meters high, of Amenhotep that stood at the gateway of his mortuary temple—are the only elements of the complex that remained standing. Amenhotep III also built the Third Pylon at Karnak and erected 600 statues of the goddess Sekhmet in the Temple of Mut, south of Karnak.[52] Some of the most magnificent statues of New Kingdom Egypt date to his reign "such as the two outstanding couchant rose granite lions originally set before the temple at Soleb in Nubia" as well as a large series of royal sculptures.[53] Several beautiful black granite seated statues of Amenhotep wearing the nemes headress have come from excavations behind the Colossi of Memnon as well as from Tanis in the Delta.[53] One of the most stunning finds of royal statuaries dating to his reign was made as recently as 1989 in the courtyard of Amenhotep III's colonnade of the Temple of Luxor where a cache of statues including "a superb 6 feet (1.8 m)-high (1.83 m) pink quartzite statue of the king standing on a sled-(god Tem, Atum) and wearing the Double Crown" was uncovered.[53]

"Les tombeaux cachés d'Égypte", le 19 janvier à 21.00, sur National Geographic.
Pour maintenir la paix dans son royaume, le pharaon Amenhotep III avait une stratégie pour le moins originale : en échange d'or, il demandait en mariage les princesses des puissances voisines... et arrivait toujours à ses fins.

4. Nefertiti, also known as Neferneferuaten who seems to have become a joint king with her husband later in the reign with the throne name Ankhetkheperure
Akhenaten had sisters, among whom where:
5. Sitamun
6. Bekatetan

Text: Sung in Egyptian by the Funeral Chorus (from Budge, The Egyptian Book of the Dead)
I added the lyrics in Egyptian with translations, taken from Philip Glass's web site (http://www.glasspages.org/akhnaten.html#libretto). I had to place them at the top left since the bottom center already had some subtitles.
Cast (This was the Feb 23, 2013 performance.):
Akhnaten: Nicholas Tamagna
Queen Tye: Olivia Savage
Nefertiti: Sarah Ballman
Horemhab: Jeremy Johnson
Aye: Jason Eck
Amon: Lorenzo Garcia
Narrator: Ben Abbott
