Canada Road Trip: Best Things To Do in Manitoba
In this video, we share some of the best things to do in Manitoba, including Winnipeg and Churchill!
Welcome to Manitoba, Canada!
Right in the middle of Canada lies the province of Manitoba, which is home to the city of Winnipeg, some incredible lakes, and the polar bear and beluga whale capital of the world.
We learned about the history of human rights, did yoga with goats, learned about Canada’s history with the Hudson Bay Company, and snorkeled with beluga whales. We also relaxed in a Nordic-inspired spa, stood in the centre of Canada, and walked on the arctic tundra. We really packed a lot of adventures into our ten short days and can't wait to return one day and explore the province further.
We explored Manitoba from July 14 - July 26, 2017.

Winnipeg has floods in spring a lot because it is in a very flat area that gets a lot of snow and rain. In winter, Winnipeg is cold and gets a lot of snow. The hottest day in Winnipeg was in the year 1936, when it was 42 degrees Celsius. The coldest day in Winnipeg was in the year 1879, when it was -47 degrees Celsius.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Manitoba is a province at the longitudinal centre of Canada. It’s Canada's fifth-most populous province with its estimated 1.3 million people. Manitoba covers 649,950 square kilometres. In 1869, negotiations for the creation of the province of Manitoba led to an armed uprising of the Métis people against the Government of Canada, a conflict known as the Red River Rebellion. The rebellion's resolution led to the Parliament of Canada passing the Manitoba Act in 1870 that created the province.
2. Back in 1867 the new idea of Canada was being formed, the first 4 provinces were locked in (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick & Nova Scotia) but the idea of confederation was shot down by P.E.I and Newfoundland and no one knew how much further the idea would grow. Until Manitoba stepped up and asked to join the then small Canada being the 5th province to join.
3. Manitoba's capital and largest city, Winnipeg, is the eighth-largest census metropolitan area in Canada. The Exchange District National Historic Site showcases 30 blocks of turn of the twentieth century architecture that is unrivaled in Canada.
4. On one random day in 2012, customers at a Winnipeg Tim Hortons picked up the tab for the next customer 288 times in a row. It was not a coordinated stunt, but a random gesture of kindness that customers wanted to keep on a roll. Eventually, one guy decided not to pay for the customer behind him.
5. Churchill, Manitoba, is Canada’s most northerly port and is nicknamed the “Polar Bear Capital of the World. Residents of Churchill are asked to leave their car doors unlocked in case their neighbours need somewhere to escape from a polar bear. They have the first-ever, and only, polar bear prison for naughty bears who walk saunter into town. Churchill children are advised not to dress up as polar bears on Halloween so police can tell them apart from actual polar bears.
6. The best place in the world to see Aurora Borealis or northern lights is in the town of Churchill, on the edge of the Hudson Bay. You can also see beluga whales, there are 25.000 of them in the Hudson Bay. However, there are no roads to this remote northern town. It is only accessible by a two and half hour plane ride or a 48 hour train ride from Winnipeg.
7. A black bear cub from Canada named Winnipeg (or Winnie for short) was one of the most popular attractions at the London Zoo after it was donated to the zoo in 1915. Winnie became a favourite of Christopher Robin Milne and inspired the stories written by his father, A.A. Milne, about Winnie-the-Pooh.

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, Matthew and Karla Bailey embarked on a nationwide road trip to discover the natural beauty of Canada and its regional attractions, as well as Canadians from all cultures and backgrounds.
Manitoba: We did yoga with goats, learned about the history of Canada and human rights, snorkelled with beluga whales, stood in the centre of Canada, and walked on the arctic tundra.
