Smoke (jazz club)

Smoke Jazz & Supper-Club Lounge is an influential jazz club based in New York City on the Upper West Side, a few blocks south of Columbia University. It was founded on April 9, 1999, by Paul Stache and Frank Christopher, who, as partners, conceived, designed, and spearheaded its interior renovation. The venue at 2751 Broadway, between 104th and 105th Streets, had been Augie's Jazz Bar, which opened in 1976 and closed in August 1998. The owners regard Smoke as the enduring legacy of Augie's and often measure its tenure in jazz history to the beginning of early days of Augie's.

From 1986 to 1997, the current Birdland — now located on West 44th Street — was located at 2745 Broadway, on the same block, same side of the street, 3 doors south of Augie's. Cleopatra's Needle is fourteen blocks south of Smoke, at 2485 Broadway. Jazz at Lincoln Center is at Broadway and 60th Street (1.9 miles). Juilliard is at Broadway and 66th Street. The Manhattan School of Music is 15 blocks north of Smoke. Miller Theatre at Columbia University is 11 blocks north, on Broadway. Symphony Space, a venue for film and the performing arts, hosts jazz events, regularly. Symphony Space is 9 blocks south of Smoke, on Broadway. Harlem is contiguously north and west of Morningside Heights. Jazz (Kanso series)

Jazz (Kanso series) is a series of 20 paintings made by Nabil Kanso in 1978-79. The subjects of the works are based on the jazz music and the entertainments night life in New York and New Orleans. The paintings are done in oil and acrylic on canvas measuring 224 X 182 cm (88 X 72 inches) each. Their compositions reflect predominant red tonality built with broad brushstrokes. Works from the series were exhibited in Atlanta in 1985.

Jazz (Queen album)

Jazz is the seventh studio album by British rock band Queen, released on 10 November 1978. Roy Thomas Baker temporarily reunited with the band and became their producer; it was three years since he co-produced their 1975 album A Night at the Opera, but this album also was the last he co-produced for the band. The album's varying musical styles were alternately praised and criticised. It reached #2 in the UK Albums Chart and #6 on the US Billboard 200. Jazz has sold over 5 million copies to date.

Reception

Critical reaction upon release was mixed, with scathing reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and Creem. It was subject to a viciously condemning Rolling Stone review by Dave Marsh, which included the suggestion that "Queen may be the first truly fascist rock band". Paul Rees of Q awarded the record four stars, and wrote, "Their most underrated album, like A Night at the Opera it took in a wild array of musical styles."

"Smoke" is a song by Australian-born pop rock singer-songwriter, Natalie Imbruglia. It was released on 11 October 1998 as the fourth and final single from her debut album Left of the Middle. The single reached No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart, but failed to enter the top 40 on the Australian Singles Chart, peaking at No. 42. The video for "Smoke" was directed by Matthew Rolston. There are two versions of the video; one of which contains additional visual effects including Imbruglia's face appearing and disappearing within animated smoke.

Smoke (Mortal Kombat)

Smoke is a player character from the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. He first appeared in Mortal Kombat II (1993) as a hidden unplayable opponent and gray ninja palette swap of Scorpion who would make random onscreen appearances during gameplay. He made his official playable debut in 1995's Mortal Kombat 3 as an unlockable character, this time as an indigo-colored swap of the game's cybernetic ninjas, Sektor and Cyrax.

His role in the series has predominantly been that of a brother confidant of the younger Sub-Zero; both are part of the Lin Kuei clan of assassins who boldly choose to defect after learning of the clan's plan to convert its members into cyborgs. Smoke was ultimately captured and transformed, and given orders to hunt down Sub-Zero, but unlike his robotic counterparts he had retained his human soul. In the three-dimensional games, he is connected with Noob Saibot, under whose command he serves. Smoke's background is expanded the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, while his and Sub-Zero's fortunes are reversed in the retelling of their MK3 storyline.
