Use premixed concrete products if you are not confident in your ability to measure the basic materials.Add water carefully. Use the minimum amount of water possible while still keeping the mixture workable. The less water used, the stronger the dried, finishing product will be.

Concrete
Concrete is a composite material composed of aggregate bonded together with a fluid cement which hardens over time. Most use of the term "concrete" refers to Portland cement concrete or to concretes made with other hydraulic cements, such as ciment fondu. However, road surfaces are also a type of concrete, "asphaltic concrete", where the cement material is bitumen.
In Portland cement concrete (and other hydraulic cement concretes), when the aggregate is mixed together with the dry cement and water, they form a fluid mass that is easily molded into shape. The cement reacts chemically with the water and other ingredients to form a hard matrix which binds all the materials together into a durable stone-like material that has many uses. Often, additives (such as pozzolans or superplasticizers) are included in the mixture to improve the physical properties of the wet mix or the finished material. Most concrete is poured with reinforcing materials (such as rebar) embedded to provide tensile strength, yielding reinforced concrete.

Precast concrete
Precast concrete is a construction product produced by casting concrete in a reusable mold or "form" which is then cured in a controlled environment, transported to the construction site and lifted into place. In contrast, standard concrete is poured into site-specific forms and cured on site. Precast stone is distinguished from precast concrete by using a fine aggregate in the mixture, so the final product approaches the appearance of naturally occurring rock or stone.
By producing precast concrete in a controlled environment (typically referred to as a precast plant), the precast concrete is afforded the opportunity to properly cure and be closely monitored by plant employees. Utilizing a Precast Concrete system offers many potential advantages over site casting of concrete. The production process for Precast Concrete is performed on ground level, which helps with safety throughout a project. There is a greater control of the quality of materials and workmanship in a precast plant rather than on a construction site. Financially, the forms used in a precast plant may be reused hundreds to thousands of times before they have to be replaced, which allow cost of formwork per unit to be lower than for site-cast production.

"From PRESSS Research to PreWEC" is the eighth in the Research to Practice Webinar Series co-produced by the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).
The PREcast Seismic Structural System program (PRESSS), completed about a decade ago, introduced the use of unbonded post-tensioned walls for seismic-resistant design. Since that time, several research advancements have been made and codification of unbonded post-tensioned walls has been completed. To improve cost-effectiveness and resiliency, the PREcast wall with end columns (PreWEC) was subsequently introduced. Today, an investigation of PreWEC—focusing on understanding the influence of various damping components and interaction between rocking walls and surrounding building components—is being conducted in the NEES Rocking Wall Project. The webinar will provide 1) a brief summary of the PRESSS wall system; 2) details of PreWEC and its performance; 3) analysis results that examined the interaction between a PreWEC system connected to floors and gravity columns; and 4) directions for implementing ongoing and completed research in design practice. In addition, an opportunity to provide input for the NEES Rocking wall project will be provided.
Webinar presenters are Sri Sritharan, Wilson Engineering Professor at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa and Suzanne Dow Nakaki, a licensed structural engineer in California and the Principal of Nakaki Structural Design Inc., Tustin, California. Both presenters were involved in the PRESSS program and the codification effort. Sritharan and Nakaki are, respectively, the principal investigator and consulting engineer for the ongoing NEES Rocking Wall Project.
