HTML element for pre-formatted textConcrete is a composite material composed of aggregate bonded together with a fluid cement which hardens over time. Most use of the term "concrete" refers to Portland cement concrete or to concretes made with other hydraulic cements, such as ciment fondu. However, road surfaces are also a type of concrete, "asphaltic concrete", where the cement material is bitumen.
In Portland cement concrete (and other hydraulic cement concretes), when the aggregate is mixed together with the dry cement and water, they form a fluid mass that is easily molded into shape. The cement reacts chemically with the water and other ingredients to form a hard matrix which binds all the materials together into a durable stone-like material that has many uses. Often, additives (such as pozzolans or superplasticizers) are included in the mixture to improve the physical properties of the wet mix or the finished material. Most concrete is poured with reinforcing materials (such as rebar) embedded to provide tensile strength, yielding reinforced concrete.
Precast concrete is a construction product produced by casting concrete in a reusable mold or "form" which is then cured in a controlled environment, transported to the construction site and lifted into place. In contrast, standard concrete is poured into site-specific forms and cured on site. Precast stone is distinguished from precast concrete by using a fine aggregate in the mixture, so the final product approaches the appearance of naturally occurring rock or stone.
By producing precast concrete in a controlled environment (typically referred to as a precast plant), the precast concrete is afforded the opportunity to properly cure and be closely monitored by plant employees. Utilizing a Precast Concrete system offers many potential advantages over site casting of concrete. The production process for Precast Concrete is performed on ground level, which helps with safety throughout a project. There is a greater control of the quality of materials and workmanship in a precast plant rather than on a construction site. Financially, the forms used in a precast plant may be reused hundreds to thousands of times before they have to be replaced, which allow cost of formwork per unit to be lower than for site-cast production.

It demonstrates the efficiency of building with precast concrete panels and how a typical 4 bedroom home can be completed in 8 weeks. Compared to brick veneer this is up to 16 weeks faster meaning owners get into their homes faster and builders can complete more projects each year. The concrete walls provides better thermal and acoustic insulation also while being extremely strong. They are extremely resistant to cyclones, floods, earthquakes and ground movements. Precast concrete concrete structures have many advantages when compared to the cast-in-situ. It is not a one stop shop cure for all construction problems, but can be used advantageously wherever possible. The best of precast concrete is got when it is used with prestressing. This lecture gives a brief introduction to understand what prefabricated structures. Design benefits are given focus. The combination of high strength and high performance materials give an unique edge to precast and prestressed systems. Explore the same with us in this lecture.

Walt Liles, President of The North Atlanta Rail Barons operating group, presented this clinic in March, 2015. The purpose of this clinic was to explore the effectiveness of building a form into which a mixture of lightweight Hydrocal® and concrete patch material could be poured. The procedure was originally published in a 2013 issue of Model Railroader magazine, and Walt used this opportunity to test the procedure and share it with the NARB members. The goal of this session was to create a loading platform which had the consistency and appearance of a prototypical concrete structure, which is the goal of every serious model railroader. The actual elapsed time was about 90 minutes, but repetitive steps in the building of the forms were edited as well as the elapsed time for the Hydrocal...
