The leopard is one of the five extant species in the genus Panthera, a Felidae member. It occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa, in small parts of Western and Central Asia, on the Indian subcontinent to Southeast and East Asia. It is Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and are declining in large parts of the global range.

Cameraman Howard and his crew respond to a baboon alarm and find Kamuti, the leopard they have been filming for the past two months after she’s finally made a kill. As they inch closer to film, a lion steals Kamuti’s hard-earned prize. Lions are bigger and stronger than leopards and won’t hesitate to steal one of their kills. The crew has to make a spur-of-the-moment decision to get in the right position to film the action. DEDICATING his life to caring for his beloved animals – Armand Gerber now has two leopards living INSIDE his house. Armand, 51, runs the Iron Throne Predator and Wildlife Park in South Africa, and just a few weeks ago, one of his adult female leopards gave birth to two cubs on site. The cubs now live in Armand’s home, being hand-fed with milk bottles and sleeping next to him in bed each night. Whilst Armand expects criticism for separating the mother and her babies at such a young age, he is adamant that this is the best way to raise the cubs in captivity – even with the increased level of danger that he is faced with when interacting with the vulnerable mother. In addition to keeping a very close eye on the cubs and parents, Armand has to maintain the well-being of his other animals at the park – including 10 lions, three tigers and a cheetah.

Filmed by spotlight safaris, this is what they said about what happened in the sighting:
A lioness originally chased the leopard under a large bush then called in others to help flush it out. Finally, the male lion came in for the kill and there was a huge ruckus under the bush which ended with the lions chasing each other across the plains and the leopard walking out.
The lions then cornered the leopard again which is where this clip picks up. A leopard's best line of defense is to lie on its back with its claws extended and teeth bared - which is what is happening here.
The leopard is still very much alive at the end of this clip but faking it in hopes that the lions will lose interest - which most of them did. However, not all of them.....

This hungry leopard had no choice but to admit defeat after picking a fight with a prickly porcupine.
The predator was spotted stalking the spiky rodent, before taking a swipe at the prickly customer and quickly regretting his decision.
The bizarre battle, which lasted an hour and half, saw the determined leopard take several breaks to remove quills from his paws and lick his wounds, while the brave porcupine stuck around as if to tease his opponent.
Eventually the leopard admitted defeat and the pair slinked away together, appearing to call a truce.

When it is time to give birth a lioness leaves her pride and has her lion babies in dense cover.
A female lion mother will move her new cubs to a safe den.
The cub gets picked up by the scruff of the neck.
The cub instinctively will relax its muscles and allow the mother to move it .
Baby lions remain hidden for one to two months before being introduced to the rest of the pride.
What do lions eat?
The lion babies start to eat meat at about three months and are weaned at about six months
Because lions are carnivores, they will eventually only eat meat as they grow up.
They are known as apex predators which means they are at the top of the food chain.
Female lions stay within the pride all their lives but male lions either leave of their own accord or are driven off by the pride males at two to three years of age.
Lion cubs spend most of their day playing which is serious business for baby lions.
Lion cubs play by stalking each other, playing hide and seek and wrestling with each other.
With this they develop vital skills that they will use later in life when they have to hunt for themselves.
African male lions generally play no paternal role when it comes to provisioning of food to the cubs.
After two years lion cubs will be driven away from the pride by their father. While this may seem cruel, this is very important instinct which cause the father to do away with competition.
This action prevents inbreeding in the pride.
The responsibility for training them to hunt is also that of the mother.
Male lions will however protect lion babies from danger.
When do the cubs start hunting by themselves?
Lion babies stay with their mothers for about two years, by which stage they have joined the pride's hunting trips.
After one to two years of nomadic life these young males drive out the resident males of a pride and take over the females.
If a small group of males leave together they are able to hunt as a group and stand a better chance of being able to take over a pride.
Females prefer their pride to have a large male coalition because it reduces the number of cubs lost to infanticide at take-overs.
The displaced male lions seldom live long since they no longer have lionesses to hunt for them.
Lionesses prefer their pride to be controlled by a large coalition of males whose strength in numbers will give them a longer tenure.
Are white lion cubs albinos?
White lion cubs are not albinos. True albino lions have no colour pigmentation at all.
White lion cubs simply lack the darker pigmentation due to a rare condition that results in reduced pigmentation.

Leopard
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five "big cats" in the genus Panthera. It is a member of the family Felidae with a wide range in regions of sub-Saharan Africa, West Asia, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia to Siberia. Fossil records found in Italy suggest that in the Pleistocene it ranged as far as Europe.
Compared to other members of Felidae, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but is smaller and more lightly built. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.
The leopard's success in the wild is due to its well camouflaged fur; its opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, and strength to move heavy carcasses into trees; its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe and including arid and montane areas; and to run at speeds up to 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph).

Leopard (pattern)
A leopard pattern is a spotted color pattern, particularly in the hair coat or skin of animals, but can also describe spotting patterns in plants and fabrics. The term refers to the black and gold spotted coat of the leopard cat, but is used to describe many color combinations that result in spots scattered randomly across the skin or hair coat of other animals.
Examples of animals with coloring patterns termed leopard include many great cats in the Panthera genus, the leopard frog, the "leopard" spotting pattern in the Appaloosa and Knabstrupper breeds of horses, the leopard seal, insects such as the giant leopard moth, and fish species such as the leopard darter and the leopard shark. Examples of plants that use the term include the leopard lily, and the leopard flower.
The Lp (leopard complex) gene is responsible for the leopard color pattern in horses, which not only produces a spotted coat color but also causes mottling of the skin, a white sclera around the eye, and striped hooves. Horses with the Lp gene may be spotted all over, or may have concentrations of spots in various patterns.

Leopard (heraldry)
The leopard in heraldry is traditionally depicted the same as a lion, but in a walking position with its head turned to full face, thus it is also known as a lion passant guardant in some texts, though leopards more naturally depicted make some appearances in modern heraldry. The Oxford Guide to Heraldry makes little mention of leopards but glosses leopard as a "term used in medieval heraldry for lion passant guardant. Now used for the natural beast." Another name for this beast is the ounce.
Early heraldic leopards
The typical heraldic leopard differs from the natural leopard (Panthera pardus) in that it has no spots and often has a mane, but is generally similar in appearance to a heraldic lion, other than its attitude. In the Middle Ages, leopards were thought to be a crossbreed between a lion and a pard,
Arthur Charles Fox-Davies wrote in 1909 that the distinction between lions (which were constantly rampant) and leopards (which were necessarily walking) originated in French heraldry and was brought into English heraldry along with so much else of English language and custom deriving from French traditions. But "the use of the term leopard in heraldry to signify a certain position for the lion never received any extensive sanction, and has long since become obsolete in British armory," though the distinction is still observed in French blazon.

When it is time to give birth a lioness leaves her pride and has her lion babies in dense cover. A female lion mother will move her new cubs to a safe den. The cub gets picked up by the scruff of the neck. The cub instinctively will relax its muscles and allow the mother to move it . Armand, 51, runs the Iron Throne Predator and Wildlife Park in South Africa, and just a few weeks ago, one of his adult female leopards gave birth to two cubs on site. The cubs now live in Armand’s home, being hand-fed with milk bottles and sleeping next to him in bed each night. Whilst Armand expects criticism for separating the mother and her babies at such a young age, he is adamant that this is the best way to raise the cubs in captivity – even with the increased level of danger that he is faced with when interacting with the vulnerable mother. In addition to keeping a very close eye on the cubs and parents, Armand has to maintain the well-being of his other animals at the park – including 10 lions, three tigers and a cheetah.

A lioness originally chased the leopard under a large bush then called in others to help flush it out. Finally, the male lion came in for the kill and there was a huge ruckus under the bush which ended with the lions chasing each other across the plains and the leopard walking out.
The lions then cornered the leopard again which is where this clip picks up. A leopard's best line of defense is to lie on its back with its claws extended and teeth bared - which is what is happening here.
The leopard is still very much alive at the end of this clip but faking it in hopes that the lions will lose interest - which most of them did. However, not all of them.....

If a small group of males leave together they are able to hunt as a group and stand a better chance of being able to take over a pride.
Females prefer their pride to have a large male coalition because it reduces the number of cubs lost to infanticide at take-overs.
The displaced male lions seldom live long since they no longer have lionesses to hunt for them.
Lionesses prefer their pride to be controlled by a large coalition of males whose strength in numbers will give them a longer tenure.
Are white lion cubs albinos?
White lion cubs are not albinos. True albino lions have no colour pigmentation at all.
White lion cubs simply lack the darker pigmentation due to a rare condition that results in reduced pigmentation.

The leopard is one of the five extant species in the genus Panthera, a Felidae member. It occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa, in small parts of Western and Central Asia, on the Indian subcontinent to Southeast and East Asia. It is Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and are declining in large parts of the global range.

DEDICATING his life to caring for his beloved animals – Armand Gerber now has two leopards living INSIDE his house. Armand, 51, runs the Iron Throne Predator and Wildlife Park in South Africa, and just a few weeks ago, one of his adult female leopards gave birth to two cubs on site. The cubs now live in Armand’s home, being hand-fed with milk bottles and sleeping next to him in bed each night. Whilst Armand expects criticism for separating the mother and her babies at such a young age, he is adamant that this is the best way to raise the cubs in captivity – even with the increased level of danger that he is faced with when interacting with the vulnerable mother. In addition to keeping a very close eye on the cubs and parents, Armand has to maintain the well-being of his other animals at the park – including 10 lions, three tigers and a cheetah.

A lioness originally chased the leopard under a large bush then called in others to help flush it out. Finally, the male lion came in for the kill and there was a huge ruckus under the bush which ended with the lions chasing each other across the plains and the leopard walking out.
The lions then cornered the leopard again which is where this clip picks up. A leopard's best line of defense is to lie on its back with its claws extended and teeth bared - which is what is happening here.
The leopard is still very much alive at the end of this clip but faking it in hopes that the lions will lose interest - which most of them did. However, not all of them.....

This hungry leopard had no choice but to admit defeat after picking a fight with a prickly porcupine.
The predator was spotted stalking the spiky rodent, before taking a swipe at the prickly customer and quickly regretting his decision.
The bizarre battle, which lasted an hour and half, saw the determined leopard take several breaks to remove quills from his paws and lick his wounds, while the brave porcupine stuck around as if to tease his opponent.
Eventually the leopard admitted defeat and the pair slinked away together, appearing to call a truce.

When it is time to give birth a lioness leaves her pride and has her lion babies in dense cover.
A female lion mother will move her new cubs to a safe den.
The cub gets picked up by the scruff of the neck.
The cub instinctively will relax its muscles and allow the mother to move it .
Baby lions remain hidden for one to two months before being introduced to the rest of the pride.
What do lions eat?
The lion babies start to eat meat at about three months and are weaned at about six months
Because lions are carnivores, they will eventually only eat meat as they grow up.
They are known as apex predators which means they are at the top of the food chain.
Female lions stay within the pride all their lives but male lions either leave of their own accord or are driven off by the pride males at two to three years of age.
Lion cubs spend most of their day playing which is serious business for baby lions.
Lion cubs play by stalking each other, playing hide and seek and wrestling with each other.
With this they develop vital skills that they will use later in life when they have to hunt for themselves.
African male lions generally play no paternal role when it comes to provisioning of food to the cubs.
After two years lion cubs will be driven away from the pride by their father. While this may seem cruel, this is very important instinct which cause the father to do away with competition.
This action prevents inbreeding in the pride.
The responsibility for training them to hunt is also that of the mother.
Male lions will however protect lion babies from danger.
When do the cubs start hunting by themselves?
Lion babies stay with their mothers for about two years, by which stage they have joined the pride's hunting trips.
After one to two years of nomadic life these young males drive out the resident males of a pride and take over the females.
If a small group of males leave together they are able to hunt as a group and stand a better chance of being able to take over a pride.
Females prefer their pride to have a large male coalition because it reduces the number of cubs lost to infanticide at take-overs.
The displaced male lions seldom live long since they no longer have lionesses to hunt for them.
Lionesses prefer their pride to be controlled by a large coalition of males whose strength in numbers will give them a longer tenure.
Are white lion cubs albinos?
White lion cubs are not albinos. True albino lions have no colour pigmentation at all.
White lion cubs simply lack the darker pigmentation due to a rare condition that results in reduced pigmentation.

Leopard
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five "big cats" in the genus Panthera. It is a member of the family Felidae with a wide range in regions of sub-Saharan Africa, West Asia, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia to Siberia. Fossil records found in Italy suggest that in the Pleistocene it ranged as far as Europe.
Compared to other members of Felidae, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but is smaller and more lightly built. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.
The leopard's success in the wild is due to its well camouflaged fur; its opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, and strength to move heavy carcasses into trees; its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe and including arid and montane areas; and to run at speeds up to 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph).
