THOUGH THE NEW WORLD teemed with natural wonders, Puritan story-tellers were not content with the facts, but embroidered them with legends imported from the Old World. Thus they made themselves at home with less familiar terrors.
So encouraged by men of repute, New Englanders began to spin their local yarns. With time there developed the Yankee poker-faced liar, the predecessor of all American tall story tellers and humorists, from Davy Crockett to Mark Twain and James Thurber.
These Yankee yarn spinners were 'not mere liars' as Ben Botkin so aptly puts it, 'they were artists in ascertaining the limits of their victim's capacity for being deceived. If these limits could not be found, so much the better.' About one such Yankee it was said, ' When he wants his pigs to come to be fed, he has to get somebody else to call them.'
The old British ballad of the three fools found new roots in this American setting. Originally of Celtic derivation, the song had been used in an Elizabethan drama, The Two Noble Kinsmen in which Shakespeare may have had a hand . . .
There were three fools fell out about an howlet,
One said it was an owl,
The other sed nay,
The third he sed it was a hawk
And her bels were cut away . . .
Trimmed out with New England fancies, the song became widely popular in the North-East when the Hutchinson family sang it on their tours, along with that New England

Cape Ann
Cape Ann is a rocky cape in northeastern Massachusetts on the Atlantic Ocean. It is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Boston and marks the northern limit of Massachusetts Bay. Cape Ann includes the city of Gloucester, and the towns of Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Rockport.
Etymology
Cape Ann was first mapped by the explorer John Smith. He had given it the name Cape Tragabigzanda, after his mistress in Istanbul. He had been taken as a prisoner of war and enslaved in the Ottoman Empire. His mistress had fallen in love with him, but Smith later escaped in Russia.
When Smith presented his map to Charles I, he suggested that Charles should feel free to change any of the "barbarous names" (meaning the many Native American place names he had adopted) into English ones. The king made many such changes, but only four survive today. One was Cape Ann, which Charles named in honor of his mother Anne of Denmark.
Colony history
The English colony at Cape Ann was first founded in 1623. It was the fourth colonizing effort in New England after Popham Colony, Plymouth Colony and Nantasket Beach. Two ships of the Dorchester Company brought 32 in number with John Tylly and Thomas Gardner as overseers of a fishing operation and the plantation, respectively. This colony predated Massachusetts Bay charter and colony. For that reason, members of the colony were referred to as "old planters". The first Great House in New England was built on Cape Ann by the planters. This house was dismantled on the orders of John Endecott, in 1628, and moved to Salem to serve as his "Governor's" house. When Higginson arrived in Salem, he wrote that "we found a faire house newly built for the Governor" which was remarkable for being two stories high.

Cape Ann (Enderby Land)
Cape Ann is a cape on the coast of East Antarctica, surmounted by Mount Biscoe rising to a peak of 700 metres.
It was first photographed from the air in December 1929 during a Norwegian expedition led by explorer and aviator Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen. Less than a month later, the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition led by Douglas Mawson photographed the cape from their ship Discovery (the ship used by Robert Falcon Scott for his first Antarctic expedition, 1901-1904). Both expeditions concluded that the cape and mountain were those sighted during February and March 1831 by John Biscoe's Antarctic expedition and given the name Cape Ann, probably after Biscoe's wife. Mawson proposed that the cape retain the name Cape Ann and the mountain be named Mount Biscoe.
The mountain has a distinctive sharp black peak. Its position was fixed by an ANARE survey party in 1957.

If these limits could not be found, so much the better.' About one such Yankee it was said, ' When he wants his pigs to come to be fed, he has to get somebody else to call them.'
The old British ballad of the three fools found new roots in this American setting. Originally of Celtic derivation, the song had been used in an Elizabethan drama, The Two Noble Kinsmen in which Shakespeare may have had a hand . . .
There were three fools fell out about an howlet,
One said it was an owl,
The other sed nay,
The third he sed it was a hawk
And her bels were cut away . . .
Trimmed out with New England fancies, the song became widely popular in the North-East when the Hutchinson family sang it on their tours, along with that New England

Cape Ann
Cape Ann is a rocky cape in northeastern Massachusetts on the Atlantic Ocean. It is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Boston and marks the northern limit of Massachusetts Bay. Cape Ann includes the city of Gloucester, and the towns of Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Rockport.
Etymology
Cape Ann was first mapped by the explorer John Smith. He had given it the name Cape Tragabigzanda, after his mistress in Istanbul. He had been taken as a prisoner of war and enslaved in the Ottoman Empire. His mistress had fallen in love with him, but Smith later escaped in Russia.
When Smith presented his map to Charles I, he suggested that Charles should feel free to change any of the "barbarous names" (meaning the many Native American place names he had adopted) into English ones. The king made many such changes, but only four survive today. One was Cape Ann, which Charles named in honor of his mother Anne of Denmark.
Colony history
The English colony at Cape Ann was first founded in 1623. It was the fourth colonizing effort in New England after Popham Colony, Plymouth Colony and Nantasket Beach. Two ships of the Dorchester Company brought 32 in number with John Tylly and Thomas Gardner as overseers of a fishing operation and the plantation, respectively. This colony predated Massachusetts Bay charter and colony. For that reason, members of the colony were referred to as "old planters". The first Great House in New England was built on Cape Ann by the planters. This house was dismantled on the orders of John Endecott, in 1628, and moved to Salem to serve as his "Governor's" house. When Higginson arrived in Salem, he wrote that "we found a faire house newly built for the Governor" which was remarkable for being two stories high.
