The truth about Silica Dust | Cancer Council
Up to 100 times smaller than a grain of sand and found in many construction materials, silica dust can be an invisible presence in the workplace.
If inhaled, silica dust can cause silicosis or lung cancer.
But you can protect yourself from harm if you follow proper safety precautions.

2:13 Sources of silica
In this video, we’re going to talk about the therapeutic benefits of silica. The form of silica we’re going to cover is called orthosilicic acid. Certain parts of the body have high amounts of silica, especially the aorta, trachea, bones, and skin. As people age, these parts of the body become rough, rigid, and inelastic. But, silica may help slow down this process.
Benefits of silica:
• It can stimulate collagen type 1
• It can stimulate skin fibroblasts
• It can help bone mineralization (bone density)
• It can help decrease blood pressure
• It’s involved in calcification of the bone, and it has similar effects to vitamin D
• It chelates aluminum
• It can prevent the loss of skin elasticity
Two great sources of silica are:
• Mineral water
• Vegetables

Silica gel is silicon dioxide. In the "gel" form its intended use is as a dessicant, that is it controls humidity by adsorbing moisture. Silicon and Oxygen bonds are very stable at physiologic temperatures, and so stable that human enzymes are unable to activate reactions. However, while it may be limited in chemical toxicity, physically it can cause problems.

These cases are patients who I, or my colleagues have seen. They are de-identified and many instances have been presented in more depth in an academic setting. These videos are not individual medical advice and are for general educational purposes only. I do not give medical advice over the internet.

Silica is good for bone strength, hair, skin, and nail health, collagen formation, joints, osteoporosis, and more. It is also potentially protective against Alzheimer's disease and atherosclerosis. It is so far not considered an essential nutrient, and seems to be an area in need of further research.
