In this video, we are excited to present to you some lesser known facts about the beautiful country of Algeria. Officially known as The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Algeria is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Algeria is bordered to the Northeast by Tunisia, to the east by Libya, to the west by Morocco, to the southwest by the Western Saharan territory, Mauritania, and Mali, to the southeast by Niger, and to the north by the Mediterranean Sea. It ranks 10th in terms of surface area in Africa and 32nd in population. As of 2019, the population was estimated at over 42million people. Its capital is Algiers and its current president is Abdelmadjid Tebboune. He won in 2019 Algerian presidential election on 12 December 2019 and assumed the office on 19 December 2019.Since the 2011 breakup of Sudan, Algeria has been the largest country in Africa. Algeria is the Largest Country in the Africa. Algeria is the biggest country in Africa ,in fact it is some 14,000 square miles larger than the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is Africa’s second largest country. It’s also the 10th largest country in the world. There’s a bunch to see and do in Algeria, including seven UNESCO world Heritage sites, camel rides, sand surfing, beaches and more. Even though Algeria is large, much of the country is uninhabited. In fact, the majority of the population lives in about 12 percent of the country. Most of the rest is covered by the Sahara, which presents tourism opportunities even though it’s not a good environment for sustaining life. 2. Algeria is the land of Cherries and Dates. Algeria is commonly called the country of cherries and dates. This refers to the various types of weather found here; a mild climate in the north and a dry hot one in the Saharan south. Algerian dates are known to be some of the best on earth. Visitors are traditionally greeted by being offered dates and milk. 3. Hospitality Runs Deep. Hospitality is important among the Algerian people. It is a blend of Arabic customs with French Gallic traditions. Everyone is cordial to strangers and friends alike. In a small gathering, it is polite to greet each person individually, beginning with the elders. Handshakes are common but using your fingers to point at objects or people is considered rude. Never use the left hand separately: when handing someone something, do it with the right hand or both hands. 4. The national Animal of Algeria is the Fennec Fox With its disproportionately large ears, slanted eyes and pointy nose, the attractive little fennec fox or Vulpes zerda is the national animal of Algeria, and the nickname of the country’s national football team ‘Les Fennecs’. Also referred to as the ‘desert fox’ because it lives in the desert, the fennec is likely to be spotted in the arid regions of Algeria, as well as in other North African countries. The fennec is the world’s smallest canid species and well adapted to thrive in the often-harsh environment that is its home. It is considered to be of ‘least concern’ from a conservation standpoint, and raptors are the fennec’s main threat to survival. 5. Algerian women are very Decent. Even though Western clothing are common mostly in urban areas, traditional Muslim clothing is also common. In areas under Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) control, people wear some form of traditional garb, particularly the women. It is considered proper to be dressed conservatively in public and modest clothing is worn by all Algerians. The militant Islamists demand that women be veiled and they are more than willing to enforce their orders.
