Many enjoy careers as prominent solo artists. In 2014 the Music Academy entered into a four-year partnership with the New York Philharmonic, resulting in unprecedented training and performance opportunities for Academy fellows, and Summer Festival residencies for Philharmonic musicians. The Music Academy of the West cultivates discerning, appreciative, and adventurous audiences, presenting more than 200 public events annually, nearly half of them free of charge. These include performances by faculty, visiting artists, and fellows; masterclasses; orchestra and chamber music concerts; and a fully staged opera. The 2016 Summer School and Festival took place from June 13 to August 6 at the Academy’s scenic Miraflores campus and in venues throughout Santa Barbara. For more information, visit musicacademy.org.

about MALAMBO
Op. 115 A – for bassoon and piano
Op. 115 B – for bassoon and string quartet
Op. 115 C – for bassoon and string orchestra
All three versions of this 13 min. work were composed simultaneously and should be considered original versions. As the sound of bells trigger memories of a sad past event, the bassoon (here the main protagonist) sings alone a melody only accompanied by distant birds and insects. After a second ringing of the bells the bassoonist decides to ignore the sad memories and join in a dance taking place near him. While the rhythmic character of this dance was inspired by the Malambo dance of the South American gauchos, its mood and color also reflect its Venezuelan/Colombian counterparts, the Joropo and Galerón Llanero and the Mexican Jarabe. My music here represents only the abstraction of these dances in my memory and rendered in my own musical language and rhythm, that in this case consists of alternating 12/16-7/16 meter. In the midst of the dance the bells ring again and the bassoonist, now overwhelmed by memories, becomes immersed in his own thoughts. Away from the rest he sings an expressive song that grows in intensity until the dissonant bells (in his head) finally trigger an emotional climax that dissolves in darkness. Suddenly, as if waking up from a dream, the dance resumes. This time, without interruptions, it gains momentum building up to a joyous, life-affirming ending. Malambo was Jointly Commissioned by bassoonists: Benjamin Coelho, Judith Farmer, Wendy Holdaway, Mathieu Lussier, Richard Meek, Scott Pool, Carl Rath, Barrick Stees, Sabrina Stovall, Aura Marina Trevino and Lia Uribe.
Benjamin Coelho
Professor of Bassoon at The University of Iowa since 1998. He has appeared as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician, teacher and clinician in several countries including the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Panama, Portugal, France, Romania, Australia, Canada and Czech Republic.
An avid chamber musician, he has performed with the Gramado Woodwind Quintet (Brazil), the Alaria Chamber Ensemble (New York) and the Contemporary Music Group of Minas Gerais (Brazil). As a founding member of the Manhattan Wind Quintet, Mr. Coelho performed numerous recitals and concert tours throughout the United States. The group won various chamber music competitions including Artists International, Coleman, and Monterey Peninsula Chamber Music Competition. In January of 1987 the quintet played a sold-out concert at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York.
Ariana Stirng Quartet
Hailed for their outstanding musicianship, the Arianna String Quartet has firmly established itself as one of America's finest chamber ensembles. Their performances have been praised for “tonal warmth, fastidious balance…expressive vitality” (Chicago Tribune) and “emotional commitment and fluent virtuosity,” (Pretoria News, South Africa). Formed in 1992, the ASQ garnered national attention by winning the Grand Prize in the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, First Prize in both the Coleman and Carmel Chamber Music Competitions, and were Laureates in the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition.
The Arianna Quartet has appeared throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia, with frequent visits to Brazil and South Africa. They have collaborated with many of the world’s finest musicians, including members of the Vermeer, Tokyo, Cleveland and Juilliard Quartets, and their live performances have been heard on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today,” and “Live from Music Mountain”, which broadcasts to 125 stations in the U.S. and to 35 countries. The ASQ has recorded for Albany Records and Urtext Digital Classics, and has a long-term contract with Centaur Records. Their most recent release of the two string quartets of Janácek, which has already received critical acclaim, is now available. (“These performances of the Arianna String Quartet demonstrate how technical excellence, in alliance with imagination and the human heart, can come to create something truly transcendent.” – Fanfare Magazine
