History of Belgium
The history of Belgium extends before the founding of the modern state of that name in 1830, and is intertwined with those of its neighbors: the Netherlands, Germany, France and Luxembourg. For most of its history, what is now Belgium was either a part of a larger territory, such as the Carolingian Empire, or divided into a number of smaller states, prominent among them being the Duchy of Brabant, the County of Flanders, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and County of Luxembourg. Due to its strategic location and its history as a country of contact between different cultures, Belgium has been called the "crossroads of Europe"; for the many armies fighting on its soil, it has also been called the "battlefield of Europe" or the "cockpit of Europe". It is also remarkable as a European nation whic...

Why does Belgium Exist? (Short Animated Documentary)
Why does Belgium exist? A question which is often asked given its location between two historically annex-happy states and its linguistically-divided population. If you want to find out why happy little Belgium became and managed to stay a thing then watch this short and simple animated history documentary to find out why.

Why is Belgium so Divided?
Belgium's history of linguistic division is as old as the country itself, the northern half being Dutch or Flemish speaking while the southern half is French or Walloon speaking. And we haven't even got into the German speakers living on Belgium's eastern fringes! The two larger language groups each attempt to rule their own independently having essentially segregated governments for Flanders and Wallonia, however the crisis of 2007 - 2011 showed that while the northern Flemings wanted more decentralisation and autonomy, the southern Walloons were dead set against it. Since then a split of Belgium along these lines has seemed inevitable, but this led me to question: how on earth did Belgium become so divided? The story will take us back to the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France, W...

It is also remarkable as a European nation which contains, and is divided by, a language boundary between Latin-derived French and Germanic Dutch.
Belgium's modern shape can be partly traced back at least as far as the "Seventeen Provinces" within the Burgundian Netherlands. These lands straddled the ancient boundary of the Scheldt that had divided medieval France and Germany, but they were brought together under the House of Valois-Burgundy, and unified into one autonomous territory by their heir Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, in his Pragmatic Sanction of 1549. The Eighty Years' War later led to the split between a northern Dutch Republic and the Southern Netherlands from which Belgium and Luxembourg developed. This southern territory continued to be ruled by the Habsburg descendants of the Burgundian house, at first as the "Spanish Netherlands". Invasions from France under Louis XIV led to the loss of what is now Nord-Pas-de-Calais to France, while the remainder finally became the "Austrian Netherlands". The French Revolutionary wars led to Belgium becoming part of France in 1795, bringing the end of the semi-independence of areas which had belonged to the Catholic church. After the defeat of the French in 1814, a new United Kingdom of the Netherlands was created, which eventually split one more time during the Belgian Revolution of 1830–1839, giving three modern nations, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

The film presents Belgium's history and contribution to the Atlantic Community.
It successively shows the cities of Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent, the Belgian historical and cultural heritage, the dense railway network, trade activities in Belgium, including commerce with the Belgian Congo, and the importance of the textile and railway industries.
The story concludes on the crucial place of Belgium as an international center in the Atlantic Community.
"Introducing Belgium" is part of a series originally designed as "Know your Allies", and finally titled "the Atlantic Community Series".
Its objectives were to familiarize public opinion in each of the member country with the other Alliance members and to emphasize the national contributions to Western culture and political traditions, economic reconstruction and allied defense in the framework of NATO.
The series was produced between 1954 and 1956 and financed by the US government in the context of the Marshall Plan with the cooperation of the Information Service of NATO, and distributed by NATO. The films in the Atlantic Community Series received large non-theatrical distribution and, in some cases, were shown in cinemas and on TV. Language versions were made and distributed with the help of the national governments.
“My country and NATO” tells the story of each one of NATO’s members, using a selection of unique archival materials to take you back in time.

Chef’s Night Out: Beer Festivals, Natural Wine, and Oodles of Noodles in Brussels
Part of the new generation of Belgian restauranteurs, Richard and his friends offer us a lively guided tour of their favorite locations in the capital. What started wisely with a drink at 203 ended in fire alarm, food porn, 25 bottles of wine, 10,000 calories, and striptease on the street. In short, a memorable evening.

WIJNDOMEIN ALDENEYCK (Aldeneik) • Fine Belgian wines from the Meuse valley • Tasty Tales
Wijndomein Aldeneyck owners Karel Henckens and his wife Tine used to have a fruit company but decided that life could perhaps be more beautiful when, instead of just growing apples and pears, they grew grapes and made Belgian wine. The vineyards of Wijndomein Aldeneyck now stretch along the south-eastern banks of the river Maas. The pebble and rocky gravel soil, rich in minerals, is perfect for growing grapes.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Belgian Malinois that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Herding Dogs
Weight: 40 to 80 pounds
Height: 22 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12-14 years
In the hands of an experienced dog person, they are intense, intelligent, and athletic companions. However, with their high energy and exercise needs, they may not fair as well in apartments or small living spaces. This breed is not likely to suit a first-time dog owner.
Originally developed in Malines, Belgium, Malinois have a great deal of stamina and truly enjoy working. They are intelligent and very active dogs that excel at many tasks. In addition to herding, they also do well with police work, search and rescue, and in performance events, such as agility.
People who are not familiar with the Malinois often confuse them with the German Shepherd Dog (GSD), but there are significant differences in the body structure and temperament of the two breeds. Malinois are smaller dogs with lighter bones. They stand with their weight well on their toes, which gives them a square body profile, while today's GSD has a long, sloping back and carries their weight flatter on their feet.
Malinois are fawn-colored, red, or brown, and the tips of their hair are black, while the GSD is usually tan with a black saddle. Additionally, the Malinois has a more refined, chiseled head that the GSD and smaller, more triangular ears.
Many think that the Malinois is more alert and quicker to respond than the GSD. They're also very sensitive dogs that don't respond well to harsh training methods. Some Malinois are friendly and assertive, but others are reserved and aloof with strangers. They should never have a fearful or aggressive temperament.
Malinois are quick learners and eager to do whatever their people ask of them. They excel are obedience, tracking, agility, flyball, herding, showing, Schutzhund and other protection sports, search and rescue, and police work. Trainers describe them as having a high "play drive," which means that they love to play, and about anything you ask them to do is play to them.
But the Malinois' owner should never forget that this is a breed developed to protect and herd. Poorly socialized dogs may be aggressive out of fear or shyness. Additionally, although well-socialized Malinois are good with children, especially if they are raised with them, they may have a tendency to nip at their heels and try to herd them when playing.
