He falls in love with Lucy and they have this whole relationship and there's a whole little discussion about how big penises are and whether or not their useful and what's wrong with her and there's an operation and it's very -- it's very sexual. It's not something that's ever going to make it in the movie, right, for 2 reasons. The sexual content and it's a minor character compared to the family -- the Corleones -- so we have to get rid of somebody. Right? So we lose Lucy. She's a really interesting story thought. I remember being really, really into that. Of course, I didn't quote understand they were telling me when I was ten, but of well.
Dr. Rosanne Welch (RTVF) will speak on the craft of history of film adaptations from the controversy of the silent film Birth of a Nation (protested by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1915) to Breakfast at Tiffany's (to which author Truman Capote famously said, “The only thing left from the book is the title”) to The Godfather . Naturally, the behemoth in adaptation - Harry Potter (which depended on the relationship created by adapter Steve Kloves and author J.K. Rowling) will be discussed, as will the subject of this month’s celebration: Dune.
Dr. Rosanne Welch is a professor in the Low Residency MFA in Screenwriting Program from Stephens College, California State University, Fullerton, Mount San Antonio Community College and Cal Poly Pomona. In 2007, she graduated with her Ph.D. in 20th Century U.S./Film History from Claremont Graduate University. She graduated with her M.A. in 20th Century United States History from California State University, Northridge in 2004.
Welch is also a television writer/producer with credits for Beverly Hills 90210 , CBS's Emmy winning Picket Fences and Touched By An Angel . She also writes and hosts her own podcasts on 3rdPass.media, her first one titled “Mindful(I) Media with Dr. Rosanne Welch.”
Her upcoming book, "Why The Monkees Matter: Teenagers, Television and American Pop Culture" will be published in Fall 2016

Three Ring Circus: How Real Couples Balance Marriage, Work and Kids and The Encyclopedia of Women in Aviation and Space are two books she has written. Los Angeles Times and the Journal of Screenwriting hold some of her published articles.

Hey, guess what's in the theaters right now that's an adaptation? We have the Steve Jobs film which comes originally from the book by Walter Isaacson. Being made into the film now which just opened. Aaron Sorkin is the screenwriter here and Aaron Sorkin fully admits in all interviews "I want you to get the feel of his life, not the facts of his life." So he made up a bunch of stuff and added it to the movie because he thought it made a more interesting scene. It doesn't even come from the book. It's things he imagined maybe Jobs might have done when he was visiting with friends or having a private conversation with this daughter. And Sorkin fully admits that he was interested in studying the relationship between the father and the daughter because in his own life he has a dysfunctional relationship with his daughter and so in a couple of interviews I heard recently on NPR he came out and said, "I really just wrote a movie about me and my daughter and I threw Steve Jobs name on it." That's how far from the book he has taken that particular story.

Transcript:
The Hays Code stayed with us until 1968. Finally we let it go and it was replaced by the Motion Picture Film Rating system that we're all used to today. So your G, your PG, etc, etc. One of my favorite funny stories is that an R rating -- and there's listing of everything you have to do to see what rating you earn. The R rating can be earned if you use the F-word more than once in consecutive conversation. So The King's Speech, which won the Oscar a couple of years ago was originally released with an R rating, because when he's stuttering he says the F-word 4 or 5 times in a row on one sentence. That's entirely - nobody has sex in that movie. Nobody does anything that -- it's a G-rated movies. It entirely is except for that moment. So once it won the Oscar that cut that one piece out and they re-released it as a PG film, because then they knew families wanted to come see it. I think that's hilarious. So there are rules that come off of the Hays Code, but that work in our fim system now, but they're not as bad as the Hays Code.

What was crazy was, he wasn't smart enough to ask to read a copy of the script. He didn't know they would let him do that. So he just demanded that they never use the word and it turned out they only used it twice in the whole original script. So, they were perfectly happy to say "Ok. We won't use it. Can't say La Cosa Nostra. You can't say mafia." So they just keep saying "this thing of ours." IT didn't hurt the movie, but but it was something that stressed -- it might have had a financial bearing on it, because they figured the Italian audience -- this was who was going to come see this movie. Now. What really changes in most adaptations is the books are too long to be turned into films and so The Godfather provides us a good example of something that had to change both for length and for sexual content.
