As Northern Ireland marks the centenary of its foundation in May 1921 after the partition of Ireland, here is a timeline of how that came to happen. The Act of Union 1801 entered into force creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, governed through parliament in London.

Between 1801-1921, 8 million people left Ireland, often for British dominions and territories, while a further 1.5 million went to Britain between the mid-1930s and 2000.

Constitutionally, the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – formed by Acts of Union with Scotland (1707) and Ireland (1801) and then modified by the partition of Ireland in 1921 ... There was nothing inevitable about union with Scotland in 1707 or with Ireland in 1801.
