Manche Nordiren fühlen sich eher Irland zugehörig, andere dem Vereinigten Königreich. Katholiken in Nordirland werden politisch diskriminiert und benachteiligt. Radikale Aktivisten kämpfen auch gewaltsam für Veränderungen. Am bekanntesten ist die Terrorgruppe der IRA, der Provisional Irish Republican Army. Sie verübt vor allem ab den 1960ern Anschläge. Auf der anderen Seite eskalieren auch friedlichen Demonstrationen durch das Eingreifen der britischen Sicherheitskräfte. Den traurigen Höhepunkt bilden die Ereignisse in der Stadt Derry am 30 Januar 1972. Sie gehen als Blutsonntag, Bloody Sunday, auch in die Geschichte eingehen. Sie schüren den Konflikt erneut an, Anschläge und Ausschreitungen folgen. Zahlreiche Bands nehmen das in ihren Songs auf. Insgesamt fordert der Nordirlandkonflikt wohl mehr als 3.700 Menschenleben. Seit 1998 gibt es mit dem Karfreitagsabkommen zumindest offiziell Frieden. Doch es ist ein fragiler Frieden.
