Der Nordirland-Konflikt (auf Englisch „The Troubles"): Durch den Brexit, dem Ausstieg Großbritanniens aus der Europäischen Union, wird er erneut angeheizt. Der Konflikt an sich ist schon ziemlich alt – sein Ursprung reicht bis ins Mittelalter zurück.
Die Engländer kommen nach Irland und besiedeln die Insel, auf Kosten der dort lebenden katholischen Bevölkerung. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte entwickelt sich eine sehr heterogene Gesellschaft. Sie teilt sich, vor allem im Norden des Landes, grob in Anhänger der englischen Krone und ihren Gegnern. Beim Konflikt der unterschiedlichen Gruppen geht es um Identität, Religion, Politik – und Macht. Die Region Ulster im Norden des Landes wird Kern der englisch-protestantischen Besiedlung. Protestanten erhalten Vorteile, Katholiken werden diskriminiert.
Immer wieder eskaliert der Konflikt zwischen den Gruppen auf. Die Folge: Anfeindungen, Diskriminierungen und Gewalt auf beiden Seiten. 1922 wird Irland unabhängig. Die Republik Irland wird gegründet. Doch ohne den Norden. Der ist als Nordirland weiterhin ein Teil des Vereinigten Königreichs. Nun geht es zunehmend auch um die Frage nach einem vereinten Irland, die die Bevölkerung spaltet. Manche Nordiren fühlen sich eher Irland zugehörig, andere dem Vereinigten Königreich. Katholiken in Nordirland werden politisch diskriminiert und benachteiligt. Radikale Aktivisten kämpfen auch gewaltsam für Veränderungen. Am bekanntesten ist die Terrorgruppe der IRA, der Provisional Irish Republican Army. Sie verübt vor allem ab den 1960ern Anschläge. Auf der anderen Seite eskalieren auch friedlichen Demonstrationen durch das Eingreifen der britischen Sicherheitskräfte. Den traurigen Höhepunkt bilden die Ereignisse in der Stadt Derry am 30 Januar 1972. Sie gehen als Blutsonntag, Bloody Sunday, auch in die Geschichte eingehen. Sie schüren den Konflikt erneut an, Anschläge und Ausschreitungen folgen. Zahlreiche Bands nehmen das in ihren Songs auf. Insgesamt fordert der Nordirlandkonflikt wohl mehr als 3.700 Menschenleben. Seit 1998 gibt es mit dem Karfreitagsabkommen zumindest offiziell Frieden. Doch es ist ein fragiler Frieden.
Wie kann es in so einem Konflikt überhaupt dauerhaft Frieden geben? Mirko beschäftigt sich damit in diesem Video und erläutert die lange Geschichte des Konflikts von den Anfängen bis heute.

History of Ireland (1801–1923)
Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1801 to 1922. For almost all of this period, the island was governed by the UK Parliament in London through its Dublin Castle administration in Ireland. Ireland faced considerable economic difficulties in the 19th century, including the Great Famine of the 1840s. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a vigorous campaign for Irish Home Rule. While legislation enabling Irish Home Rule was eventually passed, militant and armed opposition from Irish unionists, particularly in Ulster, opposed it. Proclamation was shelved for the duration following the outbreak of the Great War. By 1918, however, moderate Irish nationalism had been eclipsed by militant republican separatism.
In 1919, war broke out between republican separatists and British Government forces. In 1921, the British Government partitioned Ireland into two semi-autonomous regions: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, intended to be co-ordinated by a Council of Ireland. Upon Royal Assent, the Parliament of Northern Ireland came into being in 1921. However, the institutions of Southern Ireland never became functional. On 11 July 1921, a ceasefire was agreed between the separatists and the British Government. Subsequent negotiations between Sinn Féin, the major Irish party, and the UK government led to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty which resulted in five-sixths of Ireland seceding from the United Kingdom. Under the terms of The Treaty, the whole island of Ireland was granted Dominion status as the Irish Free State. An opt-out provision for the Northern Ireland region resulted in its decision to remain part of the UK, while the remainder became the Irish Free State.

Ireland (
i/ˈaɪərlənd/; Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə]; Ulster-Scots: Airlann [ˈɑːrlən]) is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest on Earth.
Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (officially named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and located in the northeast of the island. In 2011 the population of Ireland was about 6.4 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.

Der Nordirland-Konflikt (auf Englisch „The Troubles"): Durch den Brexit, dem Ausstieg Großbritanniens aus der Europäischen Union, wird er erneut angeheizt. Der Konflikt an sich ist schon ziemlich alt – sein Ursprung reicht bis ins Mittelalter zurück.
Die Engländer kommen nach Irland und besiedeln die Insel, auf Kosten der dort lebenden katholischen Bevölkerung. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte entwickelt sich eine sehr heterogene Gesellschaft. Sie teilt sich, vor allem im Norden des Landes, grob in Anhänger der englischen Krone und ihren Gegnern. Beim Konflikt der unterschiedlichen Gruppen geht es um Identität, Religion, Politik – und Macht. Die Region Ulster im Norden des Landes wird Kern der englisch-protestantischen Besiedlung. Protestanten erhalten Vorteile, Katholiken werden diskriminiert.
Immer wieder eskaliert der Konflikt zwischen den Gruppen auf. Die Folge: Anfeindungen, Diskriminierungen und Gewalt auf beiden Seiten. 1922 wird Irland unabhängig. Die Republik Irland wird gegründet. Doch ohne den Norden. Der ist als Nordirland weiterhin ein Teil des Vereinigten Königreichs. Nun geht es zunehmend auch um die Frage nach einem vereinten Irland, die die Bevölkerung spaltet. Manche Nordiren fühlen sich eher Irland zugehörig, andere dem Vereinigten Königreich. Katholiken in Nordirland werden politisch diskriminiert und benachteiligt. Radikale Aktivisten kämpfen auch gewaltsam für Veränderungen. Am bekanntesten ist die Terrorgruppe der IRA, der Provisional Irish Republican Army. Sie verübt vor allem ab den 1960ern Anschläge. Auf der anderen Seite eskalieren auch friedlichen Demonstrationen durch das Eingreifen der britischen Sicherheitskräfte. Den traurigen Höhepunkt bilden die Ereignisse in der Stadt Derry am 30 Januar 1972. Sie gehen als Blutsonntag, Bloody Sunday, auch in die Geschichte eingehen. Sie schüren den Konflikt erneut an, Anschläge und Ausschreitungen folgen. Zahlreiche Bands nehmen das in ihren Songs auf. Insgesamt fordert der Nordirlandkonflikt wohl mehr als 3.700 Menschenleben. Den traurigen Höhepunkt bilden die Ereignisse in der Stadt Derry am 30 Januar 1972. Sie gehen als Blutsonntag, Bloody Sunday, auch in die Geschichte eingehen. Sie schüren den Konflikt erneut an, Anschläge und Ausschreitungen folgen. Zahlreiche Bands nehmen das in ihren Songs auf. Insgesamt fordert der Nordirlandkonflikt wohl mehr als 3.700 Menschenleben. Seit 1998 gibt es mit dem Karfreitagsabkommen zumindest offiziell Frieden. Doch es ist ein fragiler Frieden.
Wie kann es in so einem Konflikt überhaupt dauerhaft Frieden geben? Mirko beschäftigt sich damit in diesem Video und erläutert die lange Geschichte des Konflikts von den Anfängen bis heute.

History of Ireland (1801–1923)
Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1801 to 1922. For almost all of this period, the island was governed by the UK Parliament in London through its Dublin Castle administration in Ireland. Ireland faced considerable economic difficulties in the 19th century, including the Great Famine of the 1840s. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a vigorous campaign for Irish Home Rule. While legislation enabling Irish Home Rule was eventually passed, militant and armed opposition from Irish unionists, particularly in Ulster, opposed it. Proclamation was shelved for the duration following the outbreak of the Great War. By 1918, however, moderate Irish nationalism had been eclipsed by militant republican separatism.
In 1919, war broke out between republican separatists and British Government forces. In 1921, the British Government partitioned Ireland into two semi-autonomous regions: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, intended to be co-ordinated by a Council of Ireland. Upon Royal Assent, the Parliament of Northern Ireland came into being in 1921. However, the institutions of Southern Ireland never became functional. On 11 July 1921, a ceasefire was agreed between the separatists and the British Government. Subsequent negotiations between Sinn Féin, the major Irish party, and the UK government led to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty which resulted in five-sixths of Ireland seceding from the United Kingdom. Under the terms of The Treaty, the whole island of Ireland was granted Dominion status as the Irish Free State. An opt-out provision for the Northern Ireland region resulted in its decision to remain part of the UK, while the remainder became the Irish Free State.

Constitutionally, the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – formed by Acts of Union with Scotland (1707) and Ireland (1801) and then modified by the partition of Ireland in 1921 ... There was nothing inevitable about union with Scotland in 1707 or with Ireland in 1801.
