Science is advancing at an incredibly fast rate - especially in the area of genomics. The same level of advancement in computing that took 40 years to achieve took place in the short span of 4 years in the realm of genomics. How will this technological revolution in genome sequencing transform our lives for the better? Dr. Swaine Chen is a Senior Research Scientist in Infectious Diseases at GIS and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. He has a broad background in medicine, biology, and chemistry. In his lab, he studies not only why some bacteria cause infections, but also tries to develop new methods so that we can diseases more quickly in the future. Another major aspect of his work is using DNA sequencing to detect and understand outbreaks of infectious diseases, especially those that are unexpected, like the Group B Streptococcus outbreak associated with yu sheng fish in 2015 in Singapore. Genomics
Genomics is a discipline in genetics that applies recombinant DNA, DNA sequencing methods, and bioinformatics to sequence, assemble, and analyze the function and structure of genomes (the complete set of DNA within a single cell of an organism). Advances in genomics have triggered a revolution in discovery-based research to understand even the most complex biological systems such as the brain. The field includes efforts to determine the entire DNA sequence of organisms and fine-scale genetic mapping. The field also includes studies of intragenomic phenomena such as heterosis, epistasis, pleiotropy and other interactions between loci and alleles within the genome. In contrast, the investigation of the roles and functions of single genes is a primary focus of molecular biology or genetics and is a common topic of modern medical and biological research. Research of single genes does not fall into the definition of genomics unless the aim of this genetic, pathway, and functional information analysis is to elucidate its effect on, place in, and response to the entire genome's networks.

The same level of advancement in computing that took 40 years to achieve took place in the short span of 4 years in the realm of genomics. Dr. Swaine Chen is a Senior Research Scientist in Infectious Diseases at GIS and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. Science is advancing at an incredibly fast rate - especially in the area of genomics. The same level of advancement in computing that took 40 years to achieve took place in the short span of 4 years in the realm of genomics. How will this technological revolution in genome sequencing transform our lives for the better? Dr. Swaine Chen is a Senior Research Scientist in Infectious Diseases at GIS and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. He has a broad background in medicine, biology, and chemistry. In his lab, he studies not only why some bacteria cause infections, but also tries to develop new methods so that we can diseases more quickly in the future. Another major aspect of his work is using DNA sequencing to detect and understand outbreaks of infectious diseases, especially those that are unexpected, like the Group B Streptococcus outbreak associated with yu sheng fish in 2015 in Singapore. Genomics
Genomics is a discipline in genetics that applies recombinant DNA, DNA sequencing methods, and bioinformatics to sequence, assemble, and analyze the function and structure of genomes (the complete set of DNA within a single cell of an organism). Advances in genomics have triggered a revolution in discovery-based research to understand even the most complex biological systems such as the brain. The field includes efforts to determine the entire DNA sequence of organisms and fine-scale genetic mapping. The field also includes studies of intragenomic phenomena such as heterosis, epistasis, pleiotropy and other interactions between loci and alleles within the genome. In contrast, the investigation of the roles and functions of single genes is a primary focus of molecular biology or genetics and is a common topic of modern medical and biological research. Research of single genes does not fall into the definition of genomics unless the aim of this genetic, pathway, and functional information analysis is to elucidate its effect on, place in, and response to the entire genome's networks.
