In this adventure I head to St. Louis, Missouri in the United States Of America to visit the Gateway Arch. During vlog I check out this magnificent structure along with heading to the top for a fantastic view across the city.
The Gateway Arch was completed in 1965 and stands at 630ft (192m) above St Louis. Along with heading to the top of this impressive structure, I also check out the museum that's located directly underneath. Along with that I share various pieces of information throughout the video including a look at the unique tramway system that takes you to the top!

Riding To The Top Of The Gateway Arch In The Tram Car: What It's Like & What You Can See Of St Louis
When I was a kid growing up across the river from St. Louis, I got to ride the tram to the top of the Gateway Arch many times. Everytime relatives or friends from out of town came to visit, they wanted us to take them to see it, and I always got to go up with them. I never got tired of that view, or of witnessing the excitement, and even trepidation, of those going up in the Arch for the first time. But I had since moved about 100 miles from St. Louis, and hadn't taken the trip on the Arch Tram in several years. The grounds around the Arch, as well as the Visitor's Center and the Museum, underwent a major renovation and transformation that was officially revealed on July 3, 2018. We hadn't had the chance to see up close what they had done to the Gateway Arch National Park, so we took a trip to check it out. That visit also seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to take the tram ride once again! I was excited about trying it, and was looking forward to seeing if it was like I remembered. The experience was great, and the view from the top of the Arch is still as amazing as I remembered. It's an incredible structure and a marvel of design and engineering combined, making it one of the wonders of my world, at least!

Riding the tramway to the top of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. The tram is a sort of custom-made elevator/tram. The Arch was the result of a design competition in which famous architect Eero Saarinen won. The landscape was designed by landscape architect Dan Kylie, who is revered in the field of landscape architecture. During the filming of this, the ride up took approximately 5 minutes. There were ~30 mph winds, so the arch was definitely swaying. The cost to ride the tram to the top was $ 10. Well worth it.

Arch
An arch is a curved structure that spans a space and may or may not support weight above it. Arch may be synonymous with vault, but a vault may be distinguished as a continuous arch forming a roof. Arches appeared as early as the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamian brick architecture, and their systematic use started with the Ancient Romans who were the first to apply the technique to a wide range of structures.
Basic concepts
An arch is a pure compression form. It can span a large area by resolving forces into compressive stresses and, in turn eliminating tensile stresses. This is sometimes referred to as arch action. As the forces in the arch are carried to the ground, the arch will push outward at the base, called thrust. As the rise, or height of the arch decreases, the outward thrust increases. In order to maintain arch action and prevent the arch from collapsing, the thrust needs to be restrained, either with internal ties or external bracing, such as abutments.

Gateway Arch
The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot (192 m) monument in St. Louis in the U.S. state of Missouri. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of an inverted, weighted catenary arch, it is the world's tallest arch, the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere, and Missouri's tallest accessible building. Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, it is the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and has become an internationally famous symbol of St. Louis.
The arch sits at the site of St. Louis' founding on the west bank of the Mississippi River.
The Gateway Arch was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1947; construction began on February 12, 1963, and was completed on October 28, 1965, for $13 million (equivalent to $180 million in 2013). The monument opened to the public on June 10, 1967.
Background
Inception and early funding (1933–1935)
Around late 1933, civic leader Luther Ely Smith, returning to St. Louis from the George Rogers National Historical Park in Vincennes, Indiana, saw the St. Louis riverfront area and envisioned that building a memorial there would both revive the riverfront and stimulate the economy. He communicated his idea to mayor Bernard Dickmann, who on December 15, 1933, raised it in a meeting with city leaders. They sanctioned the proposal, and the nonprofit Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Association (JNEMA—pronounced "Jenny May") was formed. Smith was appointed chairman and Dickmann vice chairman. The landscape was designed by landscape architect Dan Kylie, who is revered in the field of landscape architecture. During the filming of this, the ride up took approximately 5 minutes. There were ~30 mph winds, so the arch was definitely swaying. The cost to ride the tram to the top was $ 10. Well worth it.

When I was a kid growing up across the river from St. Louis, I got to ride the tram to the top of the Gateway Arch many times. Everytime relatives or friends from out of town came to visit, they wanted us to take them to see it, and I always got to go up with them. I never got tired of that view, or of witnessing the excitement, and even trepidation, of those going up in the Arch for the first time. But I had since moved about 100 miles from St. Louis, and hadn't taken the trip on the Arch Tram in several years. The grounds around the Arch, as well as the Visitor's Center and the Museum, underwent a major renovation and transformation that was officially revealed on July 3, 2018. We hadn't had the chance to see up close what they had done to the Gateway Arch National Park, so we took a trip to check it out. That visit also seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to take the tram ride once again! I was excited about trying it, and was looking forward to seeing if it was like I remembered. The experience was great, and the view from the top of the Arch is still as amazing as I remembered. It's an incredible structure and a marvel of design and engineering combined, making it one of the wonders of my world, at least!

Arch
An arch is a curved structure that spans a space and may or may not support weight above it. Arch may be synonymous with vault, but a vault may be distinguished as a continuous arch forming a roof. Arches appeared as early as the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamian brick architecture, and their systematic use started with the Ancient Romans who were the first to apply the technique to a wide range of structures.
Basic concepts
An arch is a pure compression form. It can span a large area by resolving forces into compressive stresses and, in turn eliminating tensile stresses. This is sometimes referred to as arch action. As the forces in the arch are carried to the ground, the arch will push outward at the base, called thrust. As the rise, or height of the arch decreases, the outward thrust increases. In order to maintain arch action and prevent the arch from collapsing, the thrust needs to be restrained, either with internal ties or external bracing, such as abutments.
