Pocosin
Pocosin is a term for a type of palustrine wetland with deep, acidic, sandy, peat soils. Groundwater saturates the soil except during brief seasonal dry spells and during prolonged droughts. Pocosin soils are nutrient deficient (oligotrophic), especially in phosphorus.
Pocosins occur in the Atlantic coastal plain of North America, spanning from southeastern Virginia, through North Carolina, and into South Carolina. However, the majority of pocosins are found in North Carolina. They occupy poorly drained higher ground between streams and floodplains. Seeps cause the inundation. There are often perched water tables underlying pocosins.
Shrub vegetation is common. Pocosins are sometimes called shrub bogs. Pond pines (Pinus serotina) dominate pocosin forests, but loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) are also associated with pocosins. Additionally, pocosins are home to rare and threatened plant species including Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) and sweet pitcher plant (Sarracenia rubra).

Drudging over and under layers of ancient roots and sunken treetops, it makes its way through the thick undergrowth. It's primordial senses pick up intoxicating gases that seep upward while nearby bare feet get sucked rhythmically into the soft wet grounds of a great Quagmire. The sound of thickly skinned drums being beaten by hands that lived multiple lifetimes resonates through the backwoods. All amplified by plants once deemed poisonous by the intruders that left this place long ago, now revered by humans and animals alike, to connect with a deeper sense of their own cosmic identity. North Carolina Wildlife Federation hosts an in-depth presentation on the history of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, how it is managed and how you can enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of the region. Katerina Ramos is the North Carolina Wildlife Federation’s (NCWF’s) new Refuge Program and Volunteer Coordinator who works in conjunction with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) under a memorandum of understanding between NCWF and USFWS. Her position is focused on increasing volunteer engagement and developing education programs at the refuge. She spent an internship with the refuge complex working with the red wolf recovery program and has since been passionate in spreading the information about conservation and the benefits of National Wildlife Refuges. A small spirit is lured by the vibrant sounds of an archaic ritual, that takes place where once a great deluge cleared the lands. Drudging over and under layers of ancient roots and sunken treetops, it makes its way through the thick undergrowth. It's primordial senses pick up intoxicating gases that seep upward while nearby bare feet get sucked rhythmically into the soft wet grounds of a great Quagmire. The sound of thickly skinned drums being beaten by hands that lived multiple lifetimes resonates through the backwoods. All amplified by plants once deemed poisonous by the intruders that left this place long ago, now revered by humans and animals alike, to connect with a deeper sense of their own cosmic identity.

North Carolina Wildlife Federation hosts an in-depth presentation on the history of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, how it is managed and how you can enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of the region.
Katerina Ramos is the North Carolina Wildlife Federation’s (NCWF’s) new Refuge Program and Volunteer Coordinator who works in conjunction with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) under a memorandum of understanding between NCWF and USFWS. Her position is focused on increasing volunteer engagement and developing education programs at the refuge. She spent an internship with the refuge complex working with the red wolf recovery program and has since been passionate in spreading the information about conservation and the benefits of National Wildlife Refuges. She joined back on the team recently and is excited to speak about the history of pocosin lakes, how it is managed, and how you can enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of the region.

Pocosin
Pocosin is a term for a type of palustrine wetland with deep, acidic, sandy, peat soils. Groundwater saturates the soil except during brief seasonal dry spells and during prolonged droughts. Pocosin soils are nutrient deficient (oligotrophic), especially in phosphorus.
Pocosins occur in the Atlantic coastal plain of North America, spanning from southeastern Virginia, through North Carolina, and into South Carolina. However, the majority of pocosins are found in North Carolina. They occupy poorly drained higher ground between streams and floodplains. Seeps cause the inundation. There are often perched water tables underlying pocosins.
Shrub vegetation is common. Pocosins are sometimes called shrub bogs. Pond pines (Pinus serotina) dominate pocosin forests, but loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) are also associated with pocosins. Additionally, pocosins are home to rare and threatened plant species including Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) and sweet pitcher plant (Sarracenia rubra).
