Lecture 2. The Hebrew Bible in Its Ancient Near Eastern Setting: Biblical Religion in Context
Introduction to the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) (RLST 145) with Christine Hayes
In this lecture, the Hebrew Bible is understood against the background of Ancient Near Eastern culture. Drawing from and critiquing the work of Yehezkel Kaufmann, the lecture compares the religion of the Hebrew Bible with the cultures of the Ancient Near East. Two models of development are discussed: an evolutionary model of development in which the Hebrew Bible is continuous with Ancient Near Eastern culture and a revolutionary model of development in which the Israelite religion is radically discontinuous with Ancient Near Eastern culture. At stake in this debate is whether the religion of the Hebrew Bible is really the religion of ancient Israel.

The Hebrew Bible is what Christians often referred to as the Old Testament, but for all times together we will just referred to as the Hebrew Bible. It begins with the first five books, The Torah, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. After this we come to historical books that tell the story of the people. Now what kind of confuses this is that all of these books were written at different times with the stories are very much layered in different centuries even sometimes even within the same book like the story of Noah. There is two different stories of Noah we have together and other books like Ruth. Though they are written about a time of when the people lived in tribes, it is actually a story that existed a long time later. After we have these historical books there is the poetry, the wisdom literature, Job, Psalms, Ecclesiastes again all written in different types and then beyond the wisdom literature, the poetry, we come to the prophets. Some other prophets existed at the time of the kings of Israel and Judah, other prophets are proclaiming out of the exile period and then there are some about the time afterwards. Some other leader stories are Esther and Daniel and even Jonah after the people returned from the exile. So the Hebrew scriptures is a collection of books and writings of old stories that were concocted or developed over centuries by different people over the time that exist as one Great Covenant for all of us to enjoy.

Genesis is the story of the Creation and the people that followed it. The place is Canaan which is the land of Israel and the adjoining nations. The Book discusses the complex relationship between God and Mankind and portrays the travails of one particular family, the family of Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The book is priceless in its description of the custom of the day and the interaction within the family, tribe and Nation. But most of all the beauty of Genesis lies in the description of human behavior from its petty jealousies through unrelenting commitment for a worthy cause and love for family and friends. We follow the trials and tribulation of the main characters as they deal with adverse circumstances and at times global annihilation. Important part of the book is also the recounting of the genealogy of the people from Adam and Eve to Joseph in Egypt. A connection is made to other different nations and tribes. The Hebrew language is the original language of the Bible. Although Hebrew went through several transformations so far as the shape of the Alphabet, the text is consistent. (summary by Israel Radvinsky)
