The business of music has changed. Audiences have new ways of connecting to music, and artists have new ways of connecting with their audience. This has caused a shift in the culture and the sense of community that comes from music. In his talk, Erik uses his experience as an artist and touring musician to examine the journey that the music industry has been on and where it’s going next. Erik is a musician, author, speaker, teacher, and music producer. His primary artistic outlet is a project called “Del Suelo”, which combines music and literature. In September of 2018, Erik released a novel+album called “The Musician’s Compass: A 12 Step Programme”, which talks about the extreme highs and lows of the life of a touring musician. Over the past four years, Del Suelo has toured across Canada, the US, Germany and the UK extensively as a solo act and as a trio. Erik also collaborates with other musical acts as a songwriter and sideman. He is also passionate about building musical community and teaches a guitar-theory Jam once a month in Regina. When I first started making music, I wanted to be signed because that seemed like the most realistic way to accomplish all of my dreams at once.
I could make music when I wanted.
I could gain fans because I was being marketed by the label.
I could build a brand because the label would be promoting me in different arenas.
And I’ll get paid.
Yea, right.
They shit aint happening unless I would’ve had leverage.
Only way I have leverage is by selling music on my own and making money.
If I can make great money on my own, wtf I need a label for?
That’s why I’m independent.
Labels have talked to me about deals.
Everything was bullshit and predicated on images.
Crap PR stories filled with lies.
Like @tpain and his wife are saying in this clip.
Labels sell dreams.
Independent artists sell reality.

That’s why I’m independent.
Labels have talked to me about deals.
Everything was bullshit and predicated on images.
Crap PR stories filled with lies.

The business of music has changed. Audiences have new ways of connecting to music, and artists have new ways of connecting with their audience. This has caused a shift in the culture and the sense of community that comes from music. In his talk, Erik uses his experience as an artist and touring musician to examine the journey that the music industry has been on and where it’s going next. Erik is a musician, author, speaker, teacher, and music producer. His primary artistic outlet is a project called “Del Suelo”, which combines music and literature. In September of 2018, Erik released a novel+album called “The Musician’s Compass: A 12 Step Programme”, which talks about the extreme highs and lows of the life of a touring musician. Over the past four years, Del Suelo has toured across Canada, the US, Germany and the UK extensively as a solo act and as a trio. Erik also collaborates with other musical acts as a songwriter and sideman. He is also passionate about building musical community and teaches a guitar-theory Jam once a month in Regina. I could make music when I wanted.
I could gain fans because I was being marketed by the label.
I could build a brand because the label would be promoting me in different arenas.

Yea, right.
They shit aint happening unless I would’ve had leverage.
Only way I have leverage is by selling music on my own and making money.
If I can make great money on my own, wtf I need a label for?
That’s why I’m independent.
Labels have talked to me about deals.
Everything was bullshit and predicated on images.
Crap PR stories filled with lies.

Music industry
The music industry consists of the companies and individuals that make money by creating and selling live music performances, sound recordings and music videos of songs and instrumental pieces. Among the many individuals and organizations that operate in the industry are: the songwriters and composers who create new music; the singers, musicians, conductors and bandleaders who perform the music; the companies and professionals who create and sell recorded music and/or sheet music (e.g., music publishers, producers, recording studios, engineers, record labels, retail and online music stores, performance rights organizations); and those that help organize and present live music performances (booking agents, promoters, music venues, road crew).
The industry also includes professionals who assist singers and musicians with their music careers (talent managers, artists and repertoire managers, business managers, entertainment lawyers); those who broadcast music (satellite, Internet radio stations, broadcast radio and TV stations); music journalists and music critics; music educators and teachers; musical instrument manufacturers; as well as many others.
