The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog is a 2005 crime/thriller novel by Don Winslow, based on the DEA's involvement with the War on Drugs. The book was published after six years of writing and research by the author.

Plot summary

Winslow's novel describes three decades of the United States war on drugs by following several main characters: The DEA agent Art Keller, Adán Barrera, who controls large parts of the drug trade from Mexico to the United States of America, the prostitute Nora Hayden and Sean Callan, a gangster from the streets of New York. Keller becomes obsessed with the Barrera family after they tortured and killed a DEA agent in Mexico. Trying to avenge his colleague Keller discovers massive involvement of the US and the Mexican government in drug trade operations. The CIA prevents him from taking revenge on the drug cartels to combat left activists in Latin America.

Winslow shows the brutality of the war of drugs with very graphic scenes involving torture and massacres. He also explains with many details how the drug trade worked and how the different organisations collaborated to achieve their respective goals—from the Mexican drug cartels to the Vatican.

"The Dog" is the 21st episode of Seinfeld. The episode was the fourth episode of the show's third season. It aired on October 9, 1991.

Plot

Jerry is on a plane returning to New York City when a drunk man, Gavin Polone (played by Joseph Maher), seated next to him falls sick and asks Jerry to take care of his dog while he is taken to the hospital. He promises to call Jerry and reclaim the dog when he comes to New York. The dog, Farfel (although it is frequently heard barking, the dog is never seen), irritates Jerry with its barking and making messes, and Jerry feels as though he does not dare leave his apartment, for fear of what Farfel might do. He resents the animal: "I like dogs. I'm not sure this is a dog."

Jerry, George and Elaine had a date to see the movie Prognosis Negative, but Jerry asks them to go without him.

George and Elaine realize they don't have much in common without Jerry around; they begin to have a good conversation only when they start making fun of Jerry.

Al Green (wrestler)

Alfred Dobalo (October 15, 1955 – June 14, 2013), best known by his ring name Al Green, was an American professional wrestler who performed in North America, Europe, and Japan under a variety of gimmicks, including Rage one half of the team The Wrecking Crew with Fury (Marc Laurinaitis), Blade one half of the Master Blasters with Steel (Kevin Nash) and the Dog in World Championship Wrestling at the turn of the millennium.

Career

Green was trained for a professional wrestling career by Steve Keirn, making his debut in 1990 as "Blade", one half of "The Master Blasters" tag team alongside Kevin Nash.

The Master Blasters

On September 22nd, 1991 Blade was a replacement for "Iron", who left World Championship Wrestling after only one match. The reconstituted Master Blasters continued their undefeated streak in October. Meanwhile Kevin Nash would have his first singles match on September 28, defeating Tom Zenk in Baltimore, MD. At Halloween Havoc on October 27, 1990 in Chicago, IL the Blasters upended The Southern Boys and began to move up the WCW tag-team ratings. However their winning streak would finally come to an end on November 22 at the Omni in Atlanta, GA when Tom Zenk & Brian Pillman handed them their first defeat (Pillman pinning Blade). They rebounded to go on another undefeated streak, defeating The Southern Boys as well as Alan Iron Eagle & Tim Horner and earning a US Tag-Team title shot against the champions The Steiner Brothers. The Steiners however were victorious in matches on December 25 (Atlanta, GA and December 26th (Nashville, TN).

The Power (Snap! song)

"The Power" is a song by the German music group Snap! from their album World Power. It was released in January 1990 and reached number one in the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, as well as on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Rap charts. On the Billboard Hot 100, "The Power" managed to reach number two for one week, behind "Vision of Love" by Mariah Carey. It is particularly known for its hook "I've got the power!"

Background

Written by Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti (under the pseudonyms Benito Benites and John "Virgo" Garrett III) and produced by Snap!, it was the group's third single. Featuring a rap by Turbo B and vocals by Penny Ford (lip-synced in the music video by Jackie Harris), the single became a massive international hit.

The song opens with the somewhat enigmatic line in Russian: "Американская фирма Transceptor Technology приступила к производству компьютеров «Персональный спутник»" (meaning "The American company Transceptor Technology has started production of the 'Personal Companion' computer"). "Personal Companion" was a computer-like device for the blind and visually impaired. Released in 1990, it was controlled by voice and could, among other functions, automatically download articles from USA Today by a built-in modem. It was made by Transceptor Technologies of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Power (book)

The Power is a 2010 self-help and spirituality book written by Rhonda Byrne. It is a sequel to the 2006 book The Secret. The book was released on 17 August 2010 along with an audiobook based on it.
