An early election was one of the main demands of demonstrators during protests in October 2019 that saw hundreds of Iraqis killed. But many people are sceptical the ballot will create the change the protesters called for.

The country has been struggling to cope with a prolonged heatwave, as daytime temperatures in much of the country soared to 50 degrees Celsius (122°F) or higher. The power cuts have left many Iraqis without electricity and air conditioning.

And for Iraq's anti-government protesters, some of whom have been camped out in public spaces since October, that means a very tough choice: Should they remain and risk a public health crisis, or withdraw and possibly lose control of their movement?

The Iraqi people (Arabic: العراقيون ʿIrāqīyūn, Kurdish: گهلی عیراق Îraqîyan, Aramaic: ܥܡܐ ܥܝܪܩܝܐ ʿIrāqāyā, Turkish: Iraklılar) are the citizens of the modern country of Iraq.
Arabs have been the majority in Mesopotamia since the Sassanid Empire (224-637 AD).Arabic was spoken by the majority in the Iraqi Kingdom of Araba in the 1st and 2nd centuries, and by Arabs in Al-Hirah from the 3rd century.Arabs were common in Mesopotamia at the time of the Seleucids (3rd century BC). The first Arab kingdom outside of Arabia was established in Iraq's Al-Hirah in the 3rd century. Arabic was a minority language in northern Iraq in the 8th century BC, from the 8th century following the Muslim conquest of Persia it became the dominant language of Iraqi Muslims, due to Arabic being the language of the Qur'an and the Caliphate.
Kurdish Iraqi citizens live in the mountainous Zagros region of northeast Iraq to the east of the upper Tigris. Modern genetic studies indicate that Iraqi Arabs and Kurds are distantly related. Arabic and Kurdish are Iraq's national languages.

Like so many countries, Iraq is in a state of emergency bracing for a potentially huge wave of COVID-19 cases. And for Iraq's anti-government protesters, some of whom have been camped out in public spaces since October, that means a very tough choice: Should they remain and risk a public health crisis, or withdraw and possibly lose control of their movement?
VICE News visited Baghdad earlier this month, when the official number of cases of the virus hovered around two dozen, to see how the protests were faring five months on.

Huge crowds have taken to the streets of Iraq's capital, Baghdad, to demand that US forces leave Iraq.
Powerful Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr earlier called for a million people to join Friday's march, close to the US embassy in the capital.
Iranian-backed militias are among those protesting in the city.
The US killing of the top Iranian military commander, Gen Qasem Soleimani, on 3 January at Baghdad airport has fuelled tensions.
