Soliloquy: Looking for northern lights isn’t total waste

Aberdeen News 03 Nov 2021
Every time experts predict a solar storm will provide a view of the aurora borealis, I miss it, or it’s cloudy, or I watch at the wrong time. I’ve ignored the last few predictions of “Coronal Mass Ejections” because I was tired of disappointment. But with the hyped announcement this week, I decided I’d try again ... Germany.

Soliloquy: Is punishing heretics really good policy when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines?

Aberdeen News 20 Oct 2021
When I want my reluctant kids to do something, I yell at them. If that doesn’t work, I shame them. If they are still unwilling to do what I know is best for them, I ridicule them, then punish them, then insult them. Then, if all else fails, I make sure they don’t have access to basics needs. Not really ... Yell at the unvaccinated on Twitter ... In 2017, Dr.

Soliloquy: Viewing death via a crystal ball

Aberdeen News 07 Oct 2021
One crisp day this week, I walked in a snow globe with leaves in place of snow. A leaf globe. I crunched along the way, leaves fluttering all around me, brittle whispers of yellow and red. A trace of smoke tinged the air from someone’s first fall fire. Once, neighbors burned leaves in metal burn barrels, and smoke was thick in fall ... Ha!. Relief.

Soliloquy: Water flows in rock-hard times

Aberdeen News 25 Aug 2021
I’ve joked about the Aberdeen weather bubble when storms miss us, but it’s no joking matter this year. A mass of ugly weather comes our way only to dissolve upon hitting city limits, and I breathe a sigh of relief. In a year as parched as this one, though, I hoped for a hit — a hit of rain. Storm after storm missed Aberdeen ... ....

Soliloquy: Weeds do more than beautify

Aberdeen News 11 Aug 2021
A few years ago, I noticed lovely, white flowers arrayed on the corner neighbor’s chain link fence, along thin, green vines, and I thought they must have been planted deliberately since they looked so pretty on the fence. But I also spotted them around the block along the boulevard, and the next year in a yard or two ... ....

Soliloquy: God bless America? Really?

Aberdeen News 28 Jul 2021
The heartfelt cry of “God bless America” moves many people. It’s a prayer. God, we ask that you look favorably on our nation. Aberdeen News 15 Jul 2021

Soliloquy: It’s amazing what some blue paint can do

Aberdeen News 01 Jul 2021
I am painting my front door blue. I’ve wanted to paint it ever since it was painted last time. Years ago, we foolishly contracted out the exterior painting of our house to a company that specialized in interior painting ... Our house sat, battered, scraped and looking like a dilapidated wreck all that winter and well into spring ... I said nothing ... ....

Soliloquy: Never fear, it’s on the way

Aberdeen News 16 Jun 2021
We must wait for a part, from a land far away, over vast plains and oceans. We regret the delay. It’s a part for your washer. It’s a part for your car. It can’t come from your city ... Since their parents are hungry and siblings are sick, they can’t miss a paycheck ... It might take a while. You must wait for a part ... Its battery died.
