George Barbier (French: [ʒɔʁʒ baʁbje]) (1882–1932) was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century. Born in Nantes, France on 16 October 1882, Barbier was 29 years old when he mounted his first exhibition in 1911 and was subsequently swept to the forefront of his profession with commissions to design theatre and ballet costumes, to illustrate books, and to produce haute couture fashion illustrations. For the next 20 years Barbier led a group from the Ecole des Beaux Arts who were nicknamed by Vogue "The Knights of the Bracelet"—a tribute to their fashionable and flamboyant mannerisms and style of dress. Included in this élite circle were Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Pierre Brissaud (both of whom were Barbier's first cousins), Paul Iribe, Georges Lepape, and Charles Martin. During his career Barbier also turned his hand to jewellery, glass and wallpaper design, wrote essays and many articles for the prestigious Gazette du bon ton. In the mid-1920s he worked with Erté to design sets and costumes for the Folies Bergère and in 1929 he wrote the introduction for Erté's acclaimed exhibition and achieved mainstream popularity through his regular appearances in L'Illustration magazine. Barbier died in 1932 at the very pinnacle of his success. He is buried in Nantes.

Como parte de la creación de prendas de vestir y decorados de teatro y cine, produce, entre otras cosas, los trajes de Folies Bergère de 1923 y coopera con Erté en diversos vestidos y conjuntos para las producciones americanas: son suyos los magníficos trajes de Rodolfo Valentino en la película Monsieur Beaucaire (1924). También trabaja en campañas de publicidad para marcas famosas como Cartier, Renault y Elizabeth Arden.
En la cima del éxito, en 1932, muere. Tiene 50 años y no deja herederos. Seis meses más tarde, todo el corpus de su colección, incluida la valiosa biblioteca, se vende en una subasta en París. George Barbier (actor)
George W. Barbier (November 19, 1864 – July 19, 1945) was an American film and stage actor.
Career
Barbier entered Crozier Seminary to study for the ministry but gave it up to go on the stage. He began his career in light opera and spent several years in repertory and stock companies. He eventually played on Broadway, where he appeared in seven productions betwenn 1922 and 1930, among them The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Man Who Came Back. He signed a contract with Paramount Pictures in 1929 and later worked as a character actor for most of the major studios. His first film was The Big Pond (1930). The weighty, white-haired Barbier often played pompous, but mostly kind-hearted businessmen or patriarchs in supporting roles. George Barbier appeared in 88 films until his death in 1945.

Artista versátil, presentará su trabajo en diferentes formatos a lo largo del tiempo: ilustraciones de libros, diseño de vestuario para cine y teatro, ventiladores, joyería, vidrio, textiles, papel pintado y, sobre todo, ilustraciones de moda, las más exitosas y sofisticadas de su creación.
Desde 1917 se lanza a proyectos personales editoriales, encargándose de la publicación de artículos de escritores y periodistas de relieve. También ilustra, en finas ediciones de edición limitada, novelas y poemas de autores como P. Verlaine, P. Louÿs, C. Baudelaire, T. Gautier y otros
Como parte de la creación de prendas de vestir y decorados de teatro y cine, produce, entre otras cosas, los trajes de Folies Bergère de 1923 y coopera con Erté en diversos vestidos y conjuntos para las producciones americanas: son suyos los magníficos trajes de Rodolfo Valentino en la película Monsieur Beaucaire (1924). También trabaja en campañas de publicidad para marcas famosas como Cartier, Renault y Elizabeth Arden.
En la cima del éxito, en 1932, muere. Tiene 50 años y no deja herederos. Seis meses más tarde, todo el corpus de su colección, incluida la valiosa biblioteca, se vende en una subasta en París. Con el paso del tiempo, Barbier sólo sigue estando presente en la memoria de los mejores coleccionistas y bibliófilos, pero fue considerado uno de los protagonistas del Art Deco.

George Barbier (actor)
George W. Barbier (November 19, 1864 – July 19, 1945) was an American film and stage actor.
Career
Barbier entered Crozier Seminary to study for the ministry but gave it up to go on the stage. He began his career in light opera and spent several years in repertory and stock companies. He eventually played on Broadway, where he appeared in seven productions betwenn 1922 and 1930, among them The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Man Who Came Back. He signed a contract with Paramount Pictures in 1929 and later worked as a character actor for most of the major studios. His first film was The Big Pond (1930). The weighty, white-haired Barbier often played pompous, but mostly kind-hearted businessmen or patriarchs in supporting roles. George Barbier appeared in 88 films until his death in 1945.
