Building Saudi Arabia's First Movie Theatre (HBO)
There are no movie theaters in Saudi but there is strong content being created by Saudis in the underground filmmaking scene. The challenges Saudi artists face, instead of lessening the quality of their work, actually add layers, nuance and creativity to their work and it makes them adept at polite subversion and they know how to challenge the system internally.
VICE News follows Ali Al Kalthami a young Saudi filmmaker as he works on his next project in his hometown of Riyadh for his film company Telfaz11.
We also speak to Shihab Jamjoom, former deputy Minister at the Ministry of Information and owner of a massive Arabic-language cartoon company — Spacetoon — about why having Youtube Saudi stars is not enough. He tells us why Saudi needs a real movie industry for people like Ali to pro...

DRAMATIZING RESISTANCE: Saadallah Wannous and the State of Contemporary Arab Theatre
DRAMATIZING RESISTANCE: Saadallah Wannous and the State of Contemporary Arab Theatre" was a panel discussion held on March 10, 2014 at Chicago's Silk Road Rising that explored the legacy of the late great Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous. Wannous' influence on theatre being created in the Arab world today, the reality of government censorship, and the relationship between theatre and social and political change, were among the featured topics.
This panel discussion grew out of a partnership between Silk Road Rising, the American University of Beirut, and the Lebanese American University, that fostered the translation of Saadallah Wannous' play RITUALS OF SIGNS AND TRANSFORMATIONS from Arabic to English.
The partnership and translation was made possible by a grant from the John D. a...

In fact he's the Algerian Minister for Culture, Azzeddine Mihoubi.
Organised by the Arabic Theatre Authority and the National Office of Culture and Information, this is the ninth edition of the Arab Theatre Festival.
Ismael Abdallah, General Secretary of the Arabic Theatre Authority, entertains the audience with a tribute to actors, playwrights and theatre in general.
550 theatre professionals from all around the MENA region have been welcomed here this year.
The 2017 Festival is dedicated to Azzedine Medjoubi, one of Algeria's best know theatre personalities, who was assassinated in 1995 during Algeria's 'black decade'.
Eight plays are competing to win the "Soltane Ben Mohamed El Kacimi" theatre prize.
Culture minister Mihoubi says the festival is "a display of trust towards Algeria. Our country contributed a lot to the Arab theatre movement."
This year, at the end of the inauguration day, organisers and ministers hold a ceremony honouring the 15 living members of the theatre troupe of the National Front of Liberation (FLN). The collective was founded in 1958, during the war of independence by Mustapha Kateb.
During past years, this festival has been held in Amman (2012), Doha (2013), Sharjah (2014), Rabat (2015) and Kuwait City last year.
This year's festival will go on until January 19.

The partnership and translation was made possible by a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Silk Road Rising produced three staged readings of RITUALS OF SIGNS AND TRANSFORMATIONS, translated by Robert Myers and Nada Saab, and directed by Sahar Assaf, on March 8 and 9, 2014.
