Taunton Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the southwestern county of Somerset is the town of Taunton.
The name Taunton literally means "Tone Town", or "town on the River Tone" in reference to the river which flows through it. Taunton was an industrial town as early as the 13th century, when it became a producer of wool, with the aid of fulling mills. These were a system of wooden hammers which pounded the wool in water to clean and thicken it after it was woven, powered by watermills. The wool was being exported to France by the 15th century, and to Africa by the 16th century.
A fine example of genuine Tudor architecture can be seen on...

The route this time takes us through Taunton in Somerset, and startsin the beautiful Vivary Park, all the high street shops of the Town Centre, and a wander down the independent quarter to Taunton Cricket Ground, home of Somerset Cricket Club.
It's a sunny day here in Taunton UK. So we grabbed our cameras, set off to Taunton and started filming to show you round this amazing town!
Taunton is a fairly affluent town in a great location. Once voted as one of the happiest towns in the UK, Taunton offers a great quality of life, plenty of things to do and a wide range of housing options.
Taunton (/ˈtɔːntən/) is a town in Somerset, England, with a 2011 population of 69,570. Its 1,000 years of history include a 10th-century monastery. Taunton Castle originated in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory.
Taunton is the third biggest town in the county of Somerset, with a population of around 60,000 at time of filming this video.
Taunton Visitor Centre is the place to go to make the most of your time in Taunton Deane. The county town has plenty to offer from individual boutiques to historic architecture, modern dining to unspoilt views across the Blackdown Hills and the Quantock Hills (both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Taunton offers a wide mix of activities, attractions and events
Linking the end of the pedestrianised High Street with the lower slopes of the Blackdown Hills is the award-winning Vivary Park, a member of the European Garden Heritage Network and laid out on the site of the vivarium fish lake which, in mediaeval times supplied the castle and the priory.
Vivary Park is an important part of Taunton’s history. The Taunton Flower Show has occupied the park for the first weekend in August since at least 1851. Previously a medieval vivarium for the priory and castle, the park was officially laid out in 1895 as a public space for recreation and organised events. The iconic front gates and bandstand still stand today. In 1902, an Oak tree was planted close to the bandstand to mark the coronation of Edward VII and the fountain was unveiled in 1907 as a memorial to the late Queen Victoria.
Today its 7.5 hectares are home to tennis courts, a large children’s play area, pay-and-play golf course, a tree trail and the Vivary Adventure and High Ropes Centre.
In addition to all the usual High Street names Taunton is home to a large number of independent shops, many of them long-established. You’ll find some grouped along the historic Bath Place and in the St James Street Riverside area.

Located in the southwestern county of Somerset is the town of Taunton.
The name Taunton literally means "Tone Town", or "town on the River Tone" in reference to the river which flows through it. In the 9th century Taunton became one of a network of fortified settlements under Alfred the Great. It had accrued a population of around 1,500 by the time the Normans invaded in 1066.
A fine example of genuine Tudor architecture can be seen on Fore Street. The Tudor Tavern, seen just after the 3-minute mark, was completed in 1578, and is Grade I Listed.
During the Civil War in the 17th century Taunton was initially garrisoned by Parliamentary forces. A Royalist army took the town and held it for a year before it was recaptured by the Parliamentarians. Further attempts were made by the Royalists to reclaim it, but Taunton Castle withstood their advances. Following the 1660 Restoration of the Monarchy, Charles II ordered the part-destruction of Taunton Castle and revoked the town's charter in retaliation for its Parliamentary loyalties. The charter was, however, restored in 1677.
In 1685 a rebellion against King James II, successor to Charles II, took place in South West England. James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth claimed to be the rightful heir to the throne as the eldest son of Charles II. However, as he was an illegitimate son this was alleged to be an act of treason. Nevertheless, he garnered support across the South West, starting in Lyme Regis in Dorset, and culminating right here in Taunton where he was proclaimed King at the Market Cross (seen at the 4-minute mark). However, he was later captured by those loyal to James II, and was taken to the Tower of London. You can perhaps guess the rest.
Taunton expanded rapidly in the following centuries, becoming the county town of Somerset in 1935. It is home to Somerset County Cricket Club, who play at the County Ground on the south bank of the River Tone. The town is also famed for its cider production. In 1805 a small business formed, making cider in the nearby village of Norton Fitzwarren. This would go on to become the Taunton Cider Company in 1912.

Taunton is a town in Somerset, England, with a 2011 population of 69,570. It has over 1,000 years of religious and military history, including a 10th-century monastery. Taunton Castle has origins in the Anglo Saxon period. It was later the site of a priory. The Normans then built a stone castle that belonged to the Bishops of Winchester. Today's reconstructed buildings are the inner ward, housing the Museum of Somerset and Somerset Military Museum. The Grand Western Canal reached Taunton in 1839 and the railway in 1842. Today Taunton holds Musgrove Park Hospital, the Somerset County Cricket Club's County Ground and the headquarters of 40 Commando, Royal Marines. The Taunton flower show has been held in Vivary Park since 1866. The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is located in Admiralty Way.
The grounds of Taunton Castle include the Somerset County Museum and The Castle Hotel, which incorporates the Castle Bow archway. With the municipal buildings they form a three-sided group just beyond the Castle Bow archway from Fore Street.
The Castle Hotel at Taunton is a hotel with two restaurants, Castle Bow Restaurant and BRAZZ, located in the centre of Taunton, Somerset, England. The business is located in a Grade II listed 18th-century reconstruction of the former 12th-century Norman fortress, Taunton Castle.
The Tudor Tavern at 15 Fore Street is one of the oldest buildings in Taunton. Built in 1578, the Tudor Tavern is now a branch of Caffè Nero, but the rest of the building is thought to date from the 14th century, including the Medieval Hall at the back of the building.
The Market House, built in 1772, is one of Taunton's most important historic buildings, commanding a strategic position in the town centre.
The Old Market was a farmers' market in the Parade in front of Market House, but eventually moved to the Firepool area, although cattle trading on the site ceased in 2008. A large indoor shopping centre to the east of the Parade was built on a site which had at one time been a pig market. Although its official name is now Orchard, and before that the Old Market Centre, locals still refer to it as the Pig Market, as one existed there from 1614 to 1882.
Taunton town centre is home to The Orchard Shopping Centre, historic Bath Place and County Walk Shopping Centre. In addition to all the usual High Street names Taunton is home to a large number of independent shops, many of them long-established. There is a fantastic range just waiting to be explored in the Independent Quarter of Taunton which includes St James Street, Riverside and The Courtyard.
The Orchard Shopping Centre in the heart of Taunton town centre comprises 140,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space with a 600-space dedicated multi-storey car park. Orchard Shopping Centre is located in the attractive uncovered part of Taunton town centre close to Warrens Bakery, Greggs, Fizzy Whizzywoo and Piazza Cafe. Orchard Shopping Centre has entrances from the High Street, Fore Street and Paul Street and has nearly 60 stores including a variety of shops & eateries from high street favourites to specialist independents.
Bath Place is a charming pedestrian shopping street in Taunton town centre in Somerset, home to mostly independently owned businesses offering an amazing range of goods and services. In the middle ages, this narrow lane was the main route into Taunton from Exeter. The street was straightened in the 18th century and the buildings mostly date from this time. Bath Place features on Taunton’s heritage trail and many of the shop fronts still have their Georgian octagonal fanlights. Bath Place is frequently named as the jewel in Taunton’s crown and in 2015, Bath Place were runners up in the national Great British High Street contest.
County Walk Shopping Centre is a small indoor shopping arcade in Taunton town centre with an anchor supermarket, Sainsbury's, and several other large national retailers such as Subway, Costa Coffee, Savers and The Entertainer.
Taunton Farmers Market is held every Thursday from 9am until 3pm in Taunton High Street you'll find a great selection of regional cheeses, chutneys, home-made bread and cakes and all the best the county has to offer in terms of produce at this popular Farmers Market.
