West Berlin
West Berlin was a city that existed between 1949 and 1990 as a political enclave surrounded by East Berlin and East Germany. It was located some 100 miles east of the East/West German border and was accessible by land from West Germany only by a narrow rail and highway corridor. It comprised the western regions of Berlin which consisted of the American, British, and French occupation sectors, which had been established in 1945. It was politically closely affiliated with, though not part of, West Germany. It had a special and unique legal status because its administration was formally conducted by the Western Allies. East Berlin consisted of the region occupied and administered by the Soviet Union, and was claimed as its capital by East Germany. The Western Allies did not recognise this claim, as they asserted that the entire city of Berlin was legally under four-power administration. The Berlin Wall, built in 1961, physically divided East and West Berlin until it fell in 1989.

Berlin is a 2009 documentary series co-developed by the BBC and the Open University. Written and presented by Matt Frei, the series has three 60-minute episodes, each dealing with a different aspect of the history of Germany's capital city.
Episodes
Episode 1 – "Dangerous Ideas"
Using the life and posthumous legacy of Frederick the Great as its central theme, this episode covers some of the most notable political, social and cultural movements to emerge within Berlin over the past two centuries.
Episode 2 – "Ruined Visions"

At 12:16 one of the famous bridges dividing East and West Berlin is shown with the ominous sign reading -- You Are Leaving the American Sector. At 15:00 and following local sports activities are shown from sailing to track and field and racing.

Zu sehen sind u.a.:
• ICC Berlin und Funkturm
• Ku'damm und Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche (Achtung: bei 3:00 sind, ohne es damals zu ahnen, die Kelly-Family in Aktion!)
• Europa Center (innen und Aufnahmen vom damaligen "i-Punkt" auf dem Dach), "Wasserklops", Breitscheidplatz
• Tauentzienstraße, "Royal Palast"-Kino
• Brandenburger Tor und Leipziger Platz
• Reichstagsgebäude (damals konnte man noch mit dem Privat-PKW direkt vor den Eingang fahren)
• Mauerabschnitt am Potsdamer Platz mit Blick Richtung Leipziger Straße

Made in the waning years of the Cold War, this 1980s look at West Berlin promotes the city as a lovely place to live and work. Highlights include the airport (:40), music scene and discos (2:10), theater scene (2:29), transportation system including U-bahn (3:20), industry (4:47-12:00), and more. At 11:55 NATO troops parade and the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Wall are shown. At 12:16 one of the famous bridges dividing East and West Berlin is shown with the ominous sign reading -- You Are Leaving the American Sector. At 15:00 and following local sports activities are shown from sailing to track and field and racing.

Dieses Video entstand im Frühjahr 1987 im Rahmen der damaligen 750-Jahr-Feier meiner Heimatstadt mit Hilfe eines VHS-Camcorders und zeigt einige der markantesten Sehenswürdigkeiten des "alten" West-Berlins - nur wenige Jahre vor dem Fall der Berliner Mauer.
Zu sehen sind u.a.:
• ICC Berlin und Funkturm
• Ku'damm und Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche (Achtung: bei 3:00 sind, ohne es damals zu ahnen, die Kelly-Family in Aktion!)
• Europa Center (innen und Aufnahmen vom damaligen "i-Punkt" auf dem Dach), "Wasserklops", Breitscheidplatz
• Tauentzienstraße, "Royal Palast"-Kino
• Brandenburger Tor und Leipziger Platz
• Reichstagsgebäude (damals konnte man noch mit dem Privat-PKW direkt vor den Eingang fahren)
• Mauerabschnitt am Potsdamer Platz mit Blick Richtung Leipziger Straße
• Kongresshalle (heute: Haus der Kulturen der Welt)
• Ruine des Eingangsportals vom ehem. Anhalter Bahnhof

West Berlin
West Berlin was a city that existed between 1949 and 1990 as a political enclave surrounded by East Berlin and East Germany. It was located some 100 miles east of the East/West German border and was accessible by land from West Germany only by a narrow rail and highway corridor. It comprised the western regions of Berlin which consisted of the American, British, and French occupation sectors, which had been established in 1945. It was politically closely affiliated with, though not part of, West Germany. It had a special and unique legal status because its administration was formally conducted by the Western Allies. East Berlin consisted of the region occupied and administered by the Soviet Union, and was claimed as its capital by East Germany. The Western Allies did not recognise this claim, as they asserted that the entire city of Berlin was legally under four-power administration. The Berlin Wall, built in 1961, physically divided East and West Berlin until it fell in 1989.
