Using Vitamin B as a Supplement - Vitamin B12 and B6 benefits
There are two B vitamins in particular that can help you live a healthier life and prevent illnesses. These are vitamins B12 and B6. While many people are aware of the health benefits of vitamins C and E, fewer are aware of the potency of these two B vitamins. The amazing thing about these two B vitamins is that they are now being proven to specifically help prevent deterioration of both your brain and immune system. So vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 are two supplements that will definitely complement any other vitamins you may be taking.
This is particularly true when it comes to cognitive function. As you get older, your stomach secretes fewer of the acids required to absorb vitamin B12 from food into your system. A vitamin B12 deficiency can develop over time and begin to affect the brain and nervous system. Dementia and other psychiatric disorders are likely to result if this occurs. Recent studies have shown that at least 20% of people over the age of 60 do not get enough B12, which may be a cause for concern among the elderly. The earlier a B12 deficiency is discovered, the better. If neurological symptoms appear, delaying treatment for even a year can result in permanent damage.
Vitamin B12 supplements are important to take because the crystalline form of vitamin B12 can still be absorbed into the system at a regular rate even with less stomach acid. Because vitamin B12 deficiency can occur as early as the age of 30, there's no reason not to take a B12 supplement or a multivitamin if you're not eating well. Vitamin B12 is only found in animal products such as meat, chicken, fish, and dairy products. Vegetarians should be especially mindful of their vitamin B12 intake and educate themselves on the benefits of these supplements.
Unlike vitamin B12, vitamin B6 has a stronger effect on the immune system. Vitamin B6 is beneficial for increasing the levels of T-cells, T-helper cells, and antibodies, which are all disease-fighting immune system components. Surprisingly, a lack of vitamin B6 intake is even more common than a lack of B12. Americans actually consume 50-75 percent less B6 than the recommended dietary allowance, which can reduce antibody production required for the immune system to function properly. Even more concerning, as people approach the age of forty, the body begins to absorb vitamin B6 less efficiently, resulting in lower B6 levels.
If you don't get enough B6, you may be more prone to other medical problems. Aside from a failing immune system, you may also experience a decline in mental health, compromised heart health, and possibly even cancer. Vitamin B6 supplements can aid in the fight against enzymes that can cause blood vessel destruction. Vitamin B6 supplements have also been shown to improve long-term memory and slow the aging process.
Fortunately, a standard multivitamin contains adequate amounts of vitamins B12 and B6. If you are under the age of 40, this dosage should be sufficient to correct any vitamin B deficiencies. Although there is no guarantee, 6 micrograms of B12 and 3 milligrams of Vitamin B6 should be sufficient to correct any vitamin B deficiency. A higher dosage is recommended if you are over 40 and have a deficiency. There is no danger in taking B vitamins in high doses; however, if you are taking any supplement for medical reasons, you should always consult a doctor.
With vitamin B6 and B12 so easily obtained in a multivitamin, it is one of the supplements that you do not need to take. As a result, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 are two of the most beneficial and widely available supplements on the market today.
