Animation of where the largest earthquakes of the past 100 years have struck
The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that millions of earthquakes occur every year, but only one of them will be a "great earthquake" — that is, one with a magnitude of 8.0 or above. Here are where all the "great earthquakes" since 1900 have struck.

Earthquake Magnitude Power Comparison
In this 5th episode, we compare the power released for the biggest earthquakes, from an everyday 2.0 earthquake, to a 5.0 objects shifting quake, we get a visualization of how powerful certain quakes are.
Each increase in magnitude is 33 times more powerful than the previous one.

Create an Interactive Earthquake Map on ArcGIS Online - Teach with ArcGIS for Schools Course (Part1)
The following video consists of Part 1 of the 'Teach with ArcGIS for Schools' Training Course.
This video will teach you how to make interactive maps using live data in ArcGIS Online (included as part of your free ArcGIS for Schools Programme software bundle). By the end of this tutorial, you will be able to demonstrate to your pupils an interactive way for learning about natural disasters using up-to-date and transparent data sources.
Firstly, using live earthquake data we will showcase how you can easily create a map on ArcGIS Online to help your students to better understand where earthquakes around the world are located, why they occur in certain locations (analysis of tectonic plates) and how they are linked to tsunamis.
The second half of the video will teach you how to create a...

This Video shows the Largest Earthquakes in World History timeline, starting in the year 1950 (showing a ranking with earthquakes since 1900) Earthquakes shown are all events of magnitude 5.5 or greater.
Some earthquakes were higlighted, due to their high magnitude and/or high death toll. Prior to the development and deployment of seismographs – starting around 1900 – magnitudes can only be estimated, based on historical reports of the extent and severity of damage. This events were not included in this video.
Most of the magnitudes shown are in Mw (moment magnitude scale) and ML (Richter magnitude scale). Various ways of determining moment magnitude have been developed, and several subtypes of the Mw scale can be used to indicate the basis used.

In this Coding Challenge, I visualize earthquake data from the USGS by mapping the latitude, longitude and the magnitude of earthquakes with p5.js. The map imagery is pulled from mapbox.js and the math demonstrated coverts latitude, longitude to x,y via Web Mercator.

In this 5th episode, we compare the power released for the biggest earthquakes, from an everyday 2.0 earthquake, to a 5.0 objects shifting quake, we get a visualization of how powerful certain quakes are.
Each increase in magnitude is 33 times more powerful than the previous one.

The second half of the video will teach you how to create an interactive wildfire map using data of the Californian wildfires i.e. where the fires are located and the level of risk / hazard potential.
By the end of this tutorial, you will learn how to do the following:
- Locate and download data and import it onto a map
- Displaying data in a variety of ways i.e. by order of magnitude
- How to read and understand your map
- How to save & share your maps
Please check out our twitter @gisinschools or our website at schools.esri-ireland.ie for more information about the ArcGIS for Schools Programme. If you have any questions or are interested in signing up for the programme, you can contact our team via schools@esri-ireland.ie.
