Archaeologist Doug Petrovich takes us to the Oriental Institute of Chicago where he shows us a variety of ancient archaeological artifacts from the Middle East. Along the way, he goes over the problems with carbon-14 dating, as well as his views on the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament).
Dr. Doug Petrovich earned a PhD from the University of Toronto, with a major in Syro-Palestinian archaeology, a first minor in ancient Egyptian language, and a second minor in ancient Near Eastern religions. He formerly was the academic dean and a professor at Novosibirsk Biblical-Theological Seminary (Siberia, Russia), as well as at Shepherds Theological Seminary (Cary, North Carolina), having taught over 30 different courses. Dr. Petrovich’s research interests include biblical history and exegesis, Egyptology, and ancient Near Eastern history (including archaeology, epigraphy, chronology, and iconography). He teaches Ancient Egypt at Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo, Canada).

The Septuagint is a super-old, super-interesting, super-important Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures (what Christians call the Old Testament). It's got all the elements of a great story including a fascinating origin legend, lost copies shrouded in the fog of history, and cryptic secrets with huge bearing on how the Bible should be read today.

Septuagint
The Septuagint (from the Latin septuaginta, "seventy") is a translation of the Hebrew Bible and some related texts into Koine Greek. As the primary Greek translation of the Old Testament, it is also called the Greek Old Testament. This translation is quoted a number of times in the New Testament, particularly in Pauline epistles, and also by the Apostolic Fathers and later Greek Church Fathers.
The title (Greek: Ἡ μετάφρασις τῶν Ἑβδομήκοντα, lit. "The Translation of the Seventy") and its Roman numeral acronym LXX refer to the legendary seventy Jewish scholars who solely translated the Five Books of Moses into Koine Greek as early as the 3rd century BCE. Separated from the Hebrew canon of the Jewish Bible in Rabbinic Judaism, translations of the Torah into Koine Greek by early Jewish Rabbis have survived as rare fragments only.
The traditional story is that Ptolemy II sponsored the translation of the Torah (Pentateuch, Five Books of Moses). Subsequently, the Greek translation was in circulation among the Alexandrian Jews who were fluent in Koine Greek but not in Hebrew, the former being the lingua franca of Alexandria, Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean at the time.

Archaeologist Doug Petrovich takes us to the Oriental Institute of Chicago where he shows us a variety of ancient archaeological artifacts from the Middle East. Along the way, he goes over the problems with carbon-14 dating, as well as his views on the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament).
Dr. Doug Petrovich earned a PhD from the University of Toronto, with a major in Syro-Palestinian archaeology, a first minor in ancient Egyptian language, and a second minor in ancient Near Eastern religions. He formerly was the academic dean and a professor at Novosibirsk Biblical-Theological Seminary (Siberia, Russia), as well as at Shepherds Theological Seminary (Cary, North Carolina), having taught over 30 different courses. Dr. Petrovich’s research interests include biblical history and exegesis, Egyptology, and ancient Near Eastern history (including archaeology, epigraphy, chronology, and iconography). He teaches Ancient Egypt at Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo, Canada).

It's got all the elements of a great story including a fascinating origin legend, lost copies shrouded in the fog of history, and cryptic secrets with huge bearing on how the Bible should be read today.

Septuagint
The Septuagint (from the Latin septuaginta, "seventy") is a translation of the Hebrew Bible and some related texts into Koine Greek. As the primary Greek translation of the Old Testament, it is also called the Greek Old Testament. This translation is quoted a number of times in the New Testament, particularly in Pauline epistles, and also by the Apostolic Fathers and later Greek Church Fathers.
The title (Greek: Ἡ μετάφρασις τῶν Ἑβδομήκοντα, lit. "The Translation of the Seventy") and its Roman numeral acronym LXX refer to the legendary seventy Jewish scholars who solely translated the Five Books of Moses into Koine Greek as early as the 3rd century BCE. Separated from the Hebrew canon of the Jewish Bible in Rabbinic Judaism, translations of the Torah into Koine Greek by early Jewish Rabbis have survived as rare fragments only.
The traditional story is that Ptolemy II sponsored the translation of the Torah (Pentateuch, Five Books of Moses). Subsequently, the Greek translation was in circulation among the Alexandrian Jews who were fluent in Koine Greek but not in Hebrew, the former being the lingua franca of Alexandria, Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean at the time.
