The Journeys of William L. Byrd II gives plenty of insight on the lives, social standing, and appearance of the local Indigenous people of Virginia and North Carolina. Byrd was a member of the Governor’s Council (1709-1744), a planter, and surveyor of the colonies. After going to school abroad and becoming a lawyer in England, Byrd returned to Virginia to take over the family’s estate after his father’s death making him one of the wealthiest men in the colony. The town of Richmond, Virginia was founded by Byrd, and he helped survey the area between North Carolina and Virginia to create the boundary. Percy G. Adams in the introduction of The History of the Dividing Line betwixt Virginia and North Carolina said “…These works reveal his view of life. All things, men and women too, are a revelation of nature and its wonders, and an understanding of nature brings a philosophical cheer which enables the individual to carry on and act well his part. He was critical of his fellow-men, quick to see frailties, full of irony and sarcasm, but he also knew how to be generous. Of social institutions he was also critical; slavery he regarded as a liability and for the Indian he had respect…” The Journals of William Byrd II are some of the best and most credible accounts of the early years of the British Colonies. The Westover Manuscripts details the history of the dividing line between Virginia and North Carolina—a place he calls ‘the Land of Eden’. In this manuscript, Byrd describes the Tuscarora Indians enslaved on his plantation as ‘Negroes.’ He also goes on to describe the Nottoway tribe as having ‘Mahogany skin’ with braided hair adorned with cowrie shells and being ‘Dark Angels’, and another tribe (who is believed to have been the Occaneecee-Saponi) as ‘Hottentots’. Byrd makes a point to profess his disgust for the shapely Indigenous women because of their dark skin but says that the Canadians were paying European men to marry and bleach the bloodlines of the indigenous women up there and it would be a good idea to follow suit in the British colonies. He said that this miscegenation would avoid conflicts in the future over who were the rightful owners of the land.
