Israel? Palestine? Trump's Mideast peace plan explained | DW News
US President Trump has unveiled his long-awaited peace plan for the Middle East, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Under the proposal Palestinians would gain statehood but give up large stretches of land. Donald Trump calls his it "vision for peace." It grants vast tracts of disputed land, including the Jordan Valley, to Israel. And controversial Israeli settlements would be retained within Palestinian territory. The Palestinians would receive parcels of land in the south. A tunnel would connect the West Bank with Gaza. But, critically, Jerusalem would be the undivided capital of Israel. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has denounced the plan. Is the two-state dream still alive?

Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles against two bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq, Pentagon officials said Tuesday night.
No casualties were immediately reported in the strikes. The White House decided against a formal address to the nation Tuesday night.
U.S. stock futures plunged on Tuesday night following the news. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures initially plunged and oil prices surged, but U.S. stocks were trading higher Wednesday morning and oil prices fell.
President Donald Trump responded to Tuesday night’s attacks on Twitter: “All is well!” he said. “Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world, by far! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning.”
Following reports of the attacks, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said Trump “has been briefed and is monitoring the situation closely and consulting with his national security team.” Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Army Gen. Mark Milley were at the White House on Tuesday night.
Trump previously visited one of the bases that came under attack on Tuesday.
“Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched. We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression,” Zarif tweeted.
Pence briefed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi by phone Tuesday evening, the speaker’s spokesman Drew Hammill said.
In a tweet, Pelosi said she was “closely monitoring the situation.”
“We must ensure the safety of our servicemembers, including ending needless provocations from the Administration and demanding that Iran cease its violence. America & world cannot afford war,” she said.
Former Vice President Joe Biden said he would hold off commenting on Tuesday’s attacks until he had more information, but added: “Jill and I are keeping our troops and Americans overseas in our prayers. We hope you’ll keep them in yours.”
Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Jonathan Hoffman released the following statement after the attacks:
“At approximately 5:30 p.m. (EST) on January 7, Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles against U.S. military and coalition forces in Iraq. It is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel at Al-Assad and Irbil. We are working on initial battle damage assessments.”
Hours before the missile attacks, Esper said the U.S. was not seeking a war with Iran.
“We are not looking to start a war with Iran, but we are prepared to finish one,” Esper said, adding that Washington wants to see the situation de-escalate.

The Palestinian Red Crescent says at least 100 people have been injuries that include bullet wounds and tear gas inhalation. There has also been violence in the city of Ramallah in the West Bank.

NEWS DESK | Israel developed the new CAR-T cancer treatment and now, it's adding it to its list of treatments in its healthcare system. Our Ariel Levin-Waldman has the story.
Story:
Dr. Michal Besser, Head of Oncology at Sheba Medical Center in Israel’s central district, holds a bag with white fluid inside of it called CAR-T cells, believed to be one of the best answers to curing cancer.
‘CAR-T cell are immune cells — we take from the patient's blood and we genetically modify them to be able to detect tumors and makes them more aggressive against tumors,’Besser explains.
CAR-T therapy is an Israeli invention, which only went into clinical trials in the past couple years. Worldwide trials have given it an 83 percent full remission rate — even among terminal cases.
‘They are very advanced cases. The product is only approved when at least two previous therapies have failed and it's a metastatic disease,’ Besser says.
That lifesaving treatment comes at a very high cost. CAR-T therapy begins at about $370,000 and quickly rises to about $1 million — that’s the cost per patient. Those costs have put CAR-T outside of the reach of most patients, since most insurance companies balk at the cost and government health systems have been unable to bear the load.
But this year, the expensive treatment was added to Israel’s public coverage list.
‘[The future of medicine] will become very expensive. I expect governments to pay more money for healthcare,’ former Israel Ministry of Health Director General Arnon Afek claims.
Israel is paying more than ever. The 2019 budget allocated $125 million to cover pharmaceutical drugs and just over half — $70 million — was for cancer treatment itself. This has forced Israel to work on new ways to keep costs down.
‘We tell the drug companies help us include it: Cut down the drug prices so we can add more and, in many ways, it's successful,’ Afek explains.
There is another factor involved in the Israeli government working with the drug companies.
‘The second method we use is risk sharing. For example, deciding we will only pay for successful treatment,’ Afek says.
There are limitation, however. Only two specific kinds of cancer are covered at the moment and only leukemia patients aged three to 25.
Health professionals say the country can treat a maximum of 100 patients a year this way, but it’s an important health milestone for Israel, regardless, and perhaps a model for pioneering such expensive treatments worldwide.

ISRAEL First Impressions (one day in Tel Aviv)
Our first day in Tel Aviv was a beautiful one! We spent the day exploring the Levinksy Market, the Carmel Market, and the Jaffa Market in the old city. Then we had the best hummus in the world for lunch!! Followed by a gorgeous sunset on the beach. We ended the night with our first Shabbat dinner with new friends! This was our first time experiencing the Jewish Sabbath in another country, and it was a really special night. Thank you again Aaron for having us :)

2. Don’t Eat Without Tipping

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Discover the diversity of the small country Israel. Israel is not only diverse in his culture, where Muslims, Christs and Jews live peacefully together, but also in his nature.
We start our video with a map of Israel and the places you will see. Followed by the historic, old city of Jerusalem, the Wailing Wall with temple and the magnificent Tower of David light festival. Next, we visit the beautiful Sea of Galilea with the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus is believed to have delivered the Sermon on the Mount, followed by the Golan Heights and Merom Golan. Of course, you will see the beautiful Bahá'í Gardens, historic Akkon, beaches in Tel Aviv, but also Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus and the surrounded wall nowadays.
We travel to the Dead Sea, where the water is ten times as salty as in the ocean and where you get the perfect floating experience. Don't miss out the fortification of Masada. Masada is an ancient fortress in the south of Israel, where at 73CE the Jewish fled to the fortress from the Romans. The fortification is located on the top of a rock plateau at the Judaean Desert and you have beautiful view of the Dead Sea.
Discover wildlive and nature at the En Gedi national park and watch for the Nubian ibex and rock hyrax.
Last but not least, we travel to Eilat at the Red Sea for snorkeling and diving.

Get more Tips here! http://www.destinationtips.com
There’s no shortage of amazing things to do in this quaint country. You probably have your itinerary mapped out. But if you really want to make your stay enjoyable, you can’t ignore this 10 things NOT to do when visiting this sacred country.
1. Don’t Smoke on Saturday
Israel has been constructing its anti-smoking ban, so visitors should adhere to no-smoking signs and refrain from lighting up on Shabbat. If you must smoke, do it in private and far away from an Orthodox Jew who may find your smoking habit offensive.
2. Don’t Eat Without Tipping
In Israel, the waitstaff at restaurants and cafés don’t receive a salary, so they solely rely on the tips from generous patrons. Most customers don’t leave without plopping down at least a 10% tip before heading for the exit.
3. Don’t Skip the Flea Market in Jaffa
Located in the southernmost part of Tel Aviv, the port city of Jaffa has biblical and mythological roots. The flea market opens six days a week, and vendors sell everything, from antiques to handmade items. Don't miss these picturesque streets
4. Don’t Forget Orthodox Jewish Laws
Orthodox Jews follow strict religious and social laws such as Negiah (restricting physical contact between those of the opposite sex). They will keep a healthy distance between you if you’re of the opposite gender to avoid accidental contact.
5. Don’t Shave Before Entering the Dead Sea
This Sea is loaded with mineral-rich mud and high salt content, relieving certain skin issues, from acne to eczema and psoriasis. But don't shave or wax your body for at least 2 to 3 days prior. The salt content will wreak havoc on the sensitive areas, leaving you with a burning, tingling feeling. Ouch.
6. Don’t Expect to Eat a Light Breakfast
It’s customary to enjoy a really heavy breakfast, whether you’re in a tiny café or one of the country’s many restaurants. On the menu, you’ll typically find pastries, bread, salads, eggs, meat, fruits, juice, coffee, and tea. And by the time you finish your spread, it will be time for lunch!
7. Don’t Ignore the Memorial Day Siren
If you happen to visit on April 17-18 for Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day), or on April 11-12 for Holocaust Remembrance Day, you’ll hear sirens ring throughout the country. When it stops, each person must stand up straight, and pay respect to those who’ve lost their lives. So, please, don’t ignore the sound.
8. Don’t Forget to Head Out to the Desert
The Negev – also known as the desert region of Israel – is loaded with natural wonders. Timna Park is home to acacia trees, herds of wild ibex, a souvenir shop, and overnight campgrounds. If you want to take a break, a desert excursion is just what the doctor ordered.
9. Don’t Be Afraid to Haggle
Israel is full of different bazaars and markets. In Old City of Jerusalem, prices are typically marked up, but don’t be afraid to haggle. Most sellers expect shoppers to bargain with them, especially tourists from Western countries.
10. Don’t forget to visit the Sea of Galilee
If you’re the type of tourist who loves staying active even when you’re away from home, this Middle Eastern country was made for you. The Sea of Galilee is full of attractions, including the hot pools near Tiberias, hiking trails, and swimming in the freshwater lake.
Where do you want to know what not to do in next?

I want you to visit Israel. My whole site is dedicated to encouraging you to do that.
However, there are things that I don’t like about Israel (when it comes to tourism) and I assume that you probably won’t either. My list has also been influenced by the hundreds of travelers I’ve talked to. You’ll be happy to know I have solutions to most of the issues.
