Syrian refugees after 5 years in Germany | DW Documentary
In 2015, the Suleimans fled to Germany from war-torn Syria. How are they faring? Have they managed to build a new life?
While the four Suleiman children have become German citizens - and speak fluent German and have made lots of friends - their parents have had a tougher time fitting in. For four years, the family had to keep moving, until they found a permanent home in Berlin. The children’s father worries about the rest of the family that’s still in Syria. The war there continues to haunt him, so he’s sought psychological help. Their mother is learning German. She hopes that, when her children are a bit older, she can work in Germany as a nurse. The Suleimans are happy to be in Germany, even if it’s taken longer for them to settle in than they’d hoped. A report by Viktoria Kleber.

Denmark's tightening of immigration policy causes concern for Syrian refugees • FRANCE 24 English
Last month, Denmark's parliament voted a law allowing it to send asylum seekers to reception centres outside the European Union. Rwanda is among the potential host countries the Danes are negotiating with. It's the latest move in a tightening of Denmark's immigration policy. Copenhagen is already the only capital in Europe to have deemed the region around the Syrian capital Damascus to be sufficiently safe to send refugees from the area back there.

Denmark offers Syrian refugees money to return home or be put in a deportation centre
Denmark was the first country to sign the UN Refugee Convention in 1951, but it has now become the first European nation to tell Syrian refugees that they must return home. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The Scandinavian country has declared Damascus and its surrounding areas safe, stripping nearly 100 Syrian refugees of their residencies and putting hundreds more in danger of being sent back.
Syrian women appear to be being particularly targeted, with many fearing for their lives if forced to return.

Greece accused of illegal pushback of refugees at sea
In recent months, #Greece has been accused of pushing back #migrants in the Aegean Sea – an illegal practice meaning people who are trying to land on its islands are pushed back into Turkish territorial waters. #Athens has rejected the accusations, denouncing a "campaign of denigration orchestrated by Ankara". In a deal with the European Union, Turkey has agreed to take in the migrants, but regularly communicates on Greece’s alleged push-back practices. Why Syrian refugees now fear deportation from Germany | DW News
Germany is lifting an eight-year ban on deportations to Syria, creating a way to send people back to the devastated and dangerous country. Officials insist the decision will only affect a very small group of serious offenders including those who have carried out politically motivated crimes, like terrorist attacks, but that has done little to calm rights organisations and many in Berlin’s Syrian community. DW asks: What is driving their fears? What are the consequences of the decision? Why is it happening now?

Images from the refugee crisis in 2015 are etched in our collective memory. A dead child on the beach. A Syrian who talks the German chancellor into joining in a selfie. A frightened boy being torn from a bus surrounded by a raging mob.
These snapshots represent dramatic moments from the time when nearly a million refugees entered Germany in the summer of 2015. In this documentary, the authors Bamdad Esmaili and Matthias Fuchs go in search of the stories behind the pictures. What really happened back then? Where are the people who were in them now? And how did their lives unfold after the summer when German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared in front of the television cameras to say, "We'll manage this"?
Anas Modamani lives and studies in Berlin. In 2015, he photographed himself and the Chancellor together. "Through that 'selfie.' I found friends and learned the language," he says. But the image didn’t just bring him good fortune. His likeness went viral and he was labelled a terrorist. Modamani took Facebook to court. The filmmakers also encounter volunteers from Munich's main train station who handed out teddy bears back then. And they meet perfectly integrated refugees who love Bavarian food as well as others who have barely learned German even after five years. Again and again, Esmaili and Fuchs ask, "'We'll manage it.' But did we really?" They also speak with the father and aunt of two-year-old Alan Kurdi, who drowned near the Turkish town of Bodrum.
Five years after the refugee crisis, it seems the world has changed yet somehow still remains the same. The situation on the border between Turkey and Greece has not eased and Europe still doesn’t have any workable solutions to the problem of how to process and distribute new refugees. Even now, in 2020, thousands of people are still hoping to make their way to Europe.
